Money for international development rarely makes it to the people it intends to help, says Faisal Saeed Al Mutar, the founder of Ideas Beyond Borders. Highlighting the inefficiencies of the current system, he proposes a new model for aid that functions like business investments, empowering local entrepreneurs with money to build their communities and create jobs at a fraction of traditional costs. Faisal Saeed Al Mutar proposes a new model for international aid that functions like business investments, empowering local entrepreneurs to build communities and create jobs at a fraction of traditional costs. He argues this approach is more effective and accountable than current aid systems.

This analysis of international development is overly simplistic, failing to account for its nuance and complexity. Dr. Al Mutar overlooks the fact that micro-loan programs are already integrated into traditional aid models. While his thesis highlights certain aspects of development, it lacks a comprehensive approach to addressing broader systemic challenges, such as governance, infrastructure, and long-term economic sustainability.

He is not advocating for micro-loan programs but rather for a proactive approach to identifying individuals with impactful business ideas—those capable of creating jobs and strengthening their communities—and providing them with micro-grants. Unlike micro-loans, which involve extensive bureaucracy, complex systems, and additional costs such as fees, micro-grants offer a more direct and efficient means of support. His proposal shifts the development paradigm from fostering dependency to empowering individuals toward self-sufficiency and economic stability.
