    “Why do you trust the driver?” The answer is obvious. The driver is IN THE CAR with you. If they do something stupid, they’ll be dead too.

    Whereas a self driving car, the computer / AI can’t die. You and the AI’s “self” interest are not perfectly aligned.

    Smartwatches are lame. Had the jawbone competitor to the first Fitbit. Had the early smart Fitbit. Had a pebble. Have had an Apple Watch for years.

    The Apple Watch is lame. Almost everything it does falls into one of four categories.
    * payments
    * fitness
    * meditation apps
    * notifications

    More than half of the Apple Watch store is payments, fitness, and meditation oriented.

    I don’t care about ANY of that stuff.

    Time, weather, notifications. That’s about all I need.

    It’s been years and they still don’t have a reasonable remaining power app. On my phone I can see remaining power for connected devices (like headphones). I should be able to do that with the watch. How many steps I’ve taken is never a thing I need. Seeing how much power my AirPods have left is something I use often.

    Nice chatter on tech, loved the news about Pebble, I recall that I won a Pebble Watch in an idea contest on Twitter conducted by Pebble in 2013. I do agree that we are trying out different solutions, which is good, tech was never about “one size fits all”… Anyways, looking forward to the next one – Rup

    I don’t think most people want a VR headset. What people really want is the ability to have virtual displays available on demand, whether that be to watch a movie on a 100 inch screen or have multiple screens open while sitting at the desk getting work done.

    I’m visually impaired and physically incapable of driving myself. Anything that makes it easier to get around for a reasonable price is good for me. I normally use mass transit, but there are lots of places that aren’t close to a bus or train stop, so I currently use Uber & Lyft to fill the gaps in coverage of public transit.

    This i why I still think Waymo has the best FSD. I want to see out the front of the car, I get car sick otherwise. I like that they show everything around you it sees. You really can trust the car because you realize it sees a person on the sidewalk a block away.

    The real game changer for the smartwatch will be when it’s able to noninvasively continually monitor glucose levels in the blood. Knowing instantly how foods and drinks affect changes in glucose levels will make weight loss and maintenance infinitely easier

    I love my Vision Pro. However, last night (and frequently), I want to watch things with my PC friends that own VR headsets and I’m forced to go to Quest 3. BigScreen is amazing and would be incredible on Vision Pro, especially as its cross platform. However, this completely closed and isolated system is killing me.

    There’s insane amount of potential but the price is unreasonable. Doesn’t matter the use case. We not able to- as a society – swallow $4k for a “tool” that’s not the sole proprietary tool.
    Laptops. Desktops. … they become the primary tool. You use just it.
    This isn’t such a tool. It’s an “accessory”. No way $4k for an accessory

  18. @MastermindJP

    February 8, 2025 at 3:13 pm

    The Vision Pro has no major issues aside from its weight. Overall, most people are simply unwilling to pay the high price.

    I really love the show. Great production and discussion. Personally, I wouldn’t use a driverless car unless they have proven effective for decades. I don’t think they ever will. Because a computer and code is deterministic and the real world is not. You could never program for every contingentcy and a computer can not make a decision.

    Just adding my two cents the Apple Vision pro is too isolating. It doesn’t matter how awesome the experience is if you cannot share it with someone you care about. If the vision pro would be focused allowing people to experience these things together people would be more likely to tolerate the discomfort. I use the quest headset one of my favorite apps is bigscreen because you can watch a video content with a bunch of people. The vision pro environments are awesome but you need other people in their to appreciate it. The avatars in the quest are cartoonish yes, but you still sense you are in communication with another person. It takes about 30 seconds for you to stop caring about that. The tech for avatars will get better. Lastly as far as value is concerned the vision pro can replace a ton of equipment. For example, if you wanted to meet with a group of people and give presentations. With the vision pro you could display your power point presentation on large screens and have pointers you name it and meet with these people in a variety of environments. To do this in real life would cost much more.

    ☑️ Smaller, lightweight would benefit every scenario and use case.
    ☑️ Zero lag input needed for games (full hand tracking and hand masking is about 1+ frames late, but it’s very improved from firmware 1.0 that had several frames latency)
    ☑️ Zero lag multi button controllers are also superior for creative apps (3D modelling, painting, game dev etc.)
    ☑️ Controllers don’t need to be in the view of the camera. They’re tracked with 360 sensors. Any type of music performing app would benefit from this as you can keep hitting a drum that is outside of the cameras view. Games like the popular Beatsaber where you wave your hands around In and out of the view all the time benefit too. Even more casual situations like if the hand is obscured by a table, or your legs, a flowing jacket etc. would benefit from sensors rather than camera tracking.
    ☑️ Apple is king of design, but who wants to look like a futuristic, shiny, goggled up tech fashionista? It’s a Great design statement. And it looks cool. Like Apple announcing “we have arrived”! But after the announcement, you just wanna chill. Meta Orion is the way to go in terms of AR design, I think. For VR design maybe like Xreal or something much more chill, and less intrusive. Design is currently cranked to 11. Tone it down. Face wearables are not cool items you take out of your pocket, hold, use, and put back. They are an extension of your face.

    February 9, 2025 at 4:26 am

    Apple needed to have much better content available on launch on their ridiculously priced Vision Pro headset & the fact there are hardly any games & apps now is like they were setting it up to fail. On a much lighter note, it’s always lovely to see more content from the Gorgeous Bridget Carey

    well this my thoughts on hole apple vision pro is 1 price, 2 wired cable that soon as its of devise it stopes ,3 you need have other apple stuff just see or try it at home as like i wanted to see my uk total price on buying it ,i doint have any apple stuff so no apple iphone to scan my face , for me i would make future proof with largest amount of storage so price be close 5000 for this heavy dangles caple , 4 having no controllers even if not uses all time but if not good with using hands all the time as well moving eyes more than would ,…….. so i wanted try vr stuff and cheapest to try and buy any shops or online easy was meta quest 3,witch for brand new and 512 model was 465 pounds and it has onw battery internal so i then bought bobover headset with 3 batteries’ so another 150 so quick swap and balances the weight and controllers in the box no buying extra ,………and because of apple have made quest even better with faster new updates and with new apps of all types added ,………..and still have 13 year old tv not 4k or 8k so the screen on quest 3 is fine because i never really use vision pro as much because limitations , so be more paper weight than under 700 pounds for my total quest 3 package that use xbox cloud and some reto games and fact also is usb ports for flash drive so i load with videos as much as flash drive or micro sd card ,with way to still charge with spare battery , so quest is so so much better as for all in one and newbie , and all need is better clarity like vision pro has and then quest be overall winner until we see rest of 2025 vr,xr,ar,mr stoff like google and samsung looks nice may be still cheaper than vision pro. so thats my view

    The AVP allows mirroring of the iPhone, but yes, it needs to be completely able to control and interact with the iPhone like the Macs now do. I expect that’ll come soon enough.

    What Bridget is saying about Zoox doesn’t make sense. If you ride a train, you don’t see the tracks. If you ride the bus, you may or may not see the road. You are not allowed to grab the bus steering wheel. I you want to drive yourself, then don’t ride this.

    Apple doomed the vision pro by not giving it hand controllers and not porting Steam VR into it. This is where it would have made it shine and made it have value.. It still would have been expensive but then at least current VR users could justify purchasing it for VR gaming and VR social apps etc. I would have even considered getting one if it had hand controllers compatability, like porting Quest and or Index hand controllers and porting Steam game engine and Steam VR to it.

    The visibility our of the driverless car is a good point. I took a Waymo in SF last year and it was really cool to sit in the front seat sightseeing the city without a stranger talking to me.
    Also for people that easily get motion sick, the lack of a windshield might be a deal breaker.
