Mars 2020 rover: How far we’ve come
The high-tech Mars 2020 rover is about to launch into space (complete with its own helicopter). But how does this one-tonne beast compare to the original, pint-sized rover we sent to Mars in 1997?

I would assume it’s all they need and they probably want the lowest power consumption possible for the longest lifespan.

A “200 Mhz processor + 256MB RAM” in 2020?!?!?! My 3 year old phone has a 2.5 Ghz quad-core processor and 4GB of RAM. They can’t put a decent SoC on it for $2.5B?
Swapnil Chopade
July 28, 2020 at 12:59 pm
yaah, they should hire you. OR may be learn about consumer SoC and specially build SoC which costs thousands of dollars.

Are you surprised or confused?!?
Gennadiy Sharashkin
July 28, 2020 at 3:35 pm
But your phone’s battery will die in two days. Specialized processors like the one on the rover are consuming crazy low amounts of energy, which is critically important on Mars.
Anon A
July 28, 2020 at 3:40 pm
The processor is specially made to withstand radiation and ionising bit flops that can come from the sun rays in unshielded mars and ofcourse extreme temperatures. Your phone will not work in mars.

A helium-filled balloon can go very high up into the Earth’s atmosphere. Why would you think a high powered rocket engineered by thousands of scientists for years couldn’t?
Sumit Kumar
July 29, 2020 at 11:14 am
There is this thing called a telescope, you may want to invest in a 10 inches one and get some enlightenment while you follow the rocket as it flys to Mars
What more, buy a few of them , install on various parts of globe and enjoy the whole sight on the rocket as it flys away to Greenland:))

@pickld grammr ig so since we’re planning to go to the moon again, but its inevitable. we must expand to keep ourselves alive. what good is learning more about the ocean when we already know whats below the depths? we can’t even live down there anyways

for those wondering why such ‘low’ processor power, consider this: having a high processor power equals to an increase in heat and power consumption. those are 2 things you don’t want to take place for a robot on Mars.

@GentSense [Caleb Smith] The Perseverance Rover can do that with it’s designed processor.
Coyote Flowers
July 29, 2020 at 6:18 am
@GentSense [Caleb Smith] Heck, The Curiosity Rover can capture HD panoramic shots of landscapes from Mars. It can capture HD panoramic shots even with it’s technology from 2011. Don’t you think the Perseverance can do that too? Or perhaps, perform even better?
Coyote Flowers
July 29, 2020 at 6:23 am
@GentSense [Caleb Smith] It’s simple.
High power processor = an increase in heat and power consumption for the Rover.
GentSense [Caleb Smith]
July 29, 2020 at 6:28 am
@Coyote Flowers yes but these shots are often 8 megapixels or less, and when zoomed in they get very grainy and noisy. Plus there’s almost no HDR to speak of, so if the rover is in a high-contrast environment we wouldn’t be able to get much from the photos in such an environment. It would all be overblown highlights and shadows that are too dark. Wouldn’t be able to make anything out.
Coyote Flowers
July 29, 2020 at 7:07 am
@GentSense [Caleb Smith] Yes, i agree, but just like what i said: A higher spec processor equals an increase in heat and power consumption. Those are things you don’t want to take take place for a robot 54.6 million kilometers away from Earth at minimum.

Be it UFO’s or structures on the Moon and Mars. We are being lied to by NASA/JPL (Our Government) the lies continue on so many levels. NASA/JPL have a monopoly on all information and have complete control of the narrative on all space exploration. They buy their way into other countries space programs with secret agreements we are not allowed to see, the encrypted imagery and data inbound from “ALL” Spacecraft and/or rovers goes directly to NASA/JPL antenna arrays to a secure vault where only a few people are allowed, images are edited then released to the public. Currently this is a prime situation for manipulation and control of the information provided to the public and therefore cannot be trusted. The lies must end!!!

Well done NASA! Keep up the great work. I am a proud Black dad and my daughter and I will be watching the launch! BTW we should 100% be looking at Mars. NASA finally has the funding to get back on track and do things right with the Moon To Mars initiative. I look forward to sharing more of these launches and discoveries with my daughter and all this encourages the next generation to dream and wonder again which is desperately needed right now especially when we have people who want to hijack those dreams and wonders and encourage others to violence and destruction.
