I’m surprised no one asked about trading against algorithms. There is literally no way to be the fastest (as he said, seconds count) when you’re up against a literal algorithm. The computer’s reaction time will always be faster than a person’s.

    • @Deefoh

      June 25, 2024 at 7:30 pm

i think generally people day trading is more about news/sentiment over a wide range of stocks (like all of them) with some technical analysis as reassurance.

whereas algorithmic is more about purely technical metrics on specific stocks that the algo is tuned for with trades trying to making 0.1% per trade (with thousands of these trades happening during a day). while day traders are trying to ride trends looking for >1% during any given day and may just make a handful of trades on the hot stocks for the day.

all to say they are different styles so there’s still room for a day trader to make profits

Purchasing a stock may seem straightforward, but selecting the correct stock without a proven strategy can be exceedingly challenging. I’ve been working on expanding my $210K portfolio for a while, and my primary obstacle is the lack of clear entry and exit strategies. Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    • @EricaWaters-lr6zw

      June 25, 2024 at 6:14 pm

The strategies are quite rigorous for the regular-Joe. As a matter of fact, they are mostly successfully carried out by pros who have a great deal of skill and knowledge to pull such trades off.

The AI boom will also bust small software based startups and kind of consolidate that arena because AI can produce software and solve problems more efficiently than newer software can. We will see a lot more consolidation in software companies that don’t have AI integrated than those that do.

  18. @KrakenIsland64

    June 25, 2024 at 7:40 pm

I just disagree where he says it’s like gambling on slots. In stocks if you stay safe the player almost always wins. The market will go up eventually, it may rise and fall sporadically, but in the long term it rises. Gambling is the opposite, you can rise and fall sporadically but will always lose long term. If you’re not a full time, informed, day trader – buy and look away. Even with successful stocks a novice will inevitably buy highs and sell lows. The stock market as a whole will continue to go up. You just can’t watch it intermittently and sell every time it dips.

People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The increments dont match our income, yet certain investors still earn over $365,000 in stocks and assets. Wish I could accomplish that.

Says trading is like playing poker, but also says technical analysis is a science😂 A meme stock is a meme stock bc it has high premium options and high volume on a daily basis. This guy is just as clueless as any othe WSB’er and yet he is prob working as a broker for the actual enemies. Stock trading strategies are the only real thing that exists in the retail market anymore. Predictions are under the control of MM’s, not textbook analysis and it has clearly been that way since they printed 12 trillion dollars for themselves and hid the great depression during covid lockdowns. Spy halved itself and then hit a ATH in the same year while everyone was still wiping their grocceries down cashing unemployment checks. The NYSE is a fantasy land made to take civilians money and create more wealth for the already outrageously wealthy. If you learn to play as though you were one of them, you may not get taken advantage of. But anyways, screw this muppet

Personally I would have asked him what he uses as a reference for how well the economy is doing since a while back I learned the Dow, despite being referenced in the media a lot, is deeply flawed (not adjusted for inflation and only accounts for 30 of the over 3,000 companies in the stock market, among other flaws)

So I’d be interested in knowing what indicators he relies on to help him know how things are doing

It’s a common misconception that when a stock you buy skyrockets, the smart thing to do is sell it (or at least sell some of it) to lock in your profits. But the context matters. If the stock has increased sharply because the business is performing exceptionally well, it could still be a bargain. I’m still looking for companies to make additions to my $350K portfolio, to boost performance. Here for ideas…

I always found bull and bear ridiculous. You buy low and sell high regardless if it is a recession or boon. So hypocritical and idiot to qualify one’s investing style based on either. It doesn’t even consider the type of stocks or option. Just loosely market conditions. Never heard of a 20%. I have seen many utilize either term for less. The guest expert doesn’t even define 20% over what period? I imagine probably a year…

  91. @charleydxn

    July 3, 2024 at 12:37 pm

“Technical Analysis” is a pseudoscience akin to Astrology (which is different than Astronomy). Any respected authority on investing would tell you to ignore everything this man is saying. I was a little skeptical about the credibility of these videos on other subjects, but now I know 100% not to trust any of these so-called “authorities” without fact-checking every single claim.

One last thing to think about — a day trader’s goal is to “beat the market”. However, that does not paint the entire picture. When you trade a stock after owning it for less than 1 year, you pay short term capital gains taxes. When you trade a stock after holding it for more than a year, you pay long term capital gains taxes. Short term capital gains taxes are nearly twice as much as long term capital gains. Day traders not only have to beat the market, they have to DESTROY the market just to break even with long-term investors who use a buy-and-hold strategy.

tl;dr — Buy and Hold. You can’t get rich quickly by day trading unless you are Bradley Cooper in Limitless.

The challenges in stock trading are two: 1. The market does NOT have perfect information. Even tightly regulated markets have stocks where insiders have information you don’t know. 2. Share reflect a bet by investors on future earnings which is always hard because it relies on internal and external factors that may or may not happen. For example the war in Ukraine was unexpected.

I have an issue with his explanation of IPO. The companies do benefit after the IPO period because companies don’t often sell more than half of their stock so that they avoid the risk of a hostile take over. Therefore, the stock the company holds can be leveraged at the higher prices and with legal tricks it can be sold to bring in more money… there are also stock buybacks… I guess Wired didn’t want the whole vid to be about IPO.
