Thanks, I live next to a highway, and I have narrow ear canals so anykind of in- ear listening does not work for me. I don’t need total noise cancelation. So budget-wise, my choice has been a lower end headphone, and for my last 2, Sony has been my choice. The first pair I wore until the padding (which was and is comfortable) wore out – I’d say about 4 or 5 yrs. Second pair is about 2 1/2 yrs old and doing fine. What I don’t care for in either is ears sweating in the heat. That’sin-house or outside. The band on the newer one is more comfy, and can be adjusted off the head, when I care about that. Phone sound quality is acceptable, I’d say a 7-8 on a 1-10 scale. I’m not comparing it to a high end. Thanks for the review. It was helpful.

I’m glad people agree with me that Sony has made some poor design and material choices with the WHXM5. It just looks and feels cheap. If money’s tight, Sony’s discontinued XBA series earphoness are often isolating enough for bus travel, sound much better than wireless, and their cables last for years. I have a $230 pair in its 9th year, that’s $25 a year for top sound.

I have the Soundcore Q30’s. they sound great for the price but the cups have broken twice and have had to replace them which isnt super expensive but just an annoyance. I wouldnt mind checking out the Soundcore Space Ones to compare as they dont look too expensive.

I wish you didn’t let them touch the headphones before the sound test. Them knowing it feels cheap probably has influenced the sound as well
@zivzulander

Agreed. I don’t think it should have been an elimination based on blind feel, either, to just those two options. It feels like sound quality was given short shrift for this.

Interesting “blind taste test,” so to speak!
I’ve been using Sony WH-1000XM2-4 for eons, and I have yet to find a better combination of noise cancellation and flat response. The Bose headphones I’ve tried once or twice _maybe_ did _a little_ better noise-cancellation-wise, but they tended to color the sound of the music considerably more than the Sonys.
That being said though, I’m pretty impressed with Apple’s AirPods Pro and Max, but I haven’t used them enough to make a clear comparison to the Sonys.

@mr88cet Flat response isn’t necessarily good for modern music. My Sennheiser PXC 550 sounds flat by default, but I use the movie sound setting. I haven’t bothered trying the other flagships from other brands because I’m content.

I like blind tests like this. They eliminate some of the subjective biases that come from name brand recognition. Would love to see more of these types of controlled, panel testing, especially for consumer electronics that have a lot of subjectivity in terms of fit or quality.

Definitely need to add the sonoflows to this test and to test the noise cancelling performance with all these blind testers

Focal Bathys are where it’s at $699, best value out there for wireless noise canceling headphones.

I currently own Sony WH1000MX5 the only problem I have that these headphones seem to focus on the outside noise even if you have selected noise cancelling, specially if ruffling things around like a bag or other objects keys etc, the reason why I bought them it was due to Spatial Audio I did not want to fork $500 on a pair of headphones that are similar to the rest, despite of the ecosystem.

can we have headphones with easily replaceable batteries ? Battery life will be the most common reason to throw perfectly good headphones away. Built-in non-replaceable batteries is built-in obsolescence these days. We throw away electronics for that reason wether it is headphones, keyboards, wireless mice, etc. We need legislation to stop this.

The truth is most people have no idea what good sound quality actually is.
I’m a sound engineer, the difference in audio quality between $350 headphones (Sennheiser/Sony/Bose) and the sub $100 headphones is far more than just a 25% improvement.
The difference is night and day. I’d put it at a rough estimate of being at least 5 times better. As well as being better built, more durable, having better noise cancellation, being more comfortable etc.

Buy once cry once! I bit the bullet and got the Bose QC25 headphones 10 years ago and they are still functioning like the day I got them! Great headphones that I would highly recommend to anyone who travels a lot or works in environments that you want to block out the sound around you and enjoy your music! I can only imagine the newer models have gotten better!
