On paper, law professor Samar Ali and public affairs strategist Clint Brewer seem to come from very different — and perhaps opposing — backgrounds. But their friendship shows why political polarization in the US isn’t as intractable as we might think. In an enlightening conversation, they talk about how to address deepening divides in the US and around the globe — and show the value in discarding the “scare script” by which we demonize others. (This conversation is hosted by TED curator Cloe Shasha Brooks.)

The thought and practice of these ideas is a nice sentiment, but due to moral failures of certain groups, these conversations aren’t nearly as possible as this video would like to propose that it is. You can’t always convince someone that a group of people have a right to live. Sometimes you can’t convince people that a vaccine is the correct thing to take because of fear of the unknown and lack of trust in a government that has done harm to them in the past. These are simply things that this video does not address.

    • @remyllebeau77

      March 8, 2024 at 1:09 pm

Yes, babies do have a right to live. And no, trusting that all “vaccines” are the best just because it’s what the science says, is terrible logic to have. Not to mention easy to say when all the scientists that spoke out against it were shut down and silenced and many people lost their jobs for daring to tell the truth.
You don’t have the right to make people take anything. The constitution and our precious human rights do not change just because of a supposed emergency.

If you only listened to the official narrative coming from approved news sources, then your ignorance and lack of critical thinking is remarkable.

      March 8, 2024 at 5:21 pm

You see it’s not about convincing someone that they are wrong because in their mind they are right just as in your mind you are right. The goal of any conversation or debate for me to see a different point of view and think about things differently as well as maybe have someone else look at things from a different point of view as well.

    • @willb5658

      March 8, 2024 at 7:27 pm

How can I possibly see the point of view that someone doesn’t deserve the right to control their body? The right to marry who they want to marry? Identity as the gender they want to identify as? I genuinely want to know what there is to gain by conversing with someone who disagrees with that?

You don’t, because the baby is NOT your body. Not that you care about bodily autonomy, because as soon as the gov’t forced everyone to take the jab you couldn’t be happier. Your hypocrisy and disgrace knows no bounds.

@@willb5658 You can’t see the benefit of stopping blatant evil? Ending the slaughter of millions upon millions of innocent babies, more than half of whom are minorities?
We fought a whole war against Germany in ww2, and they didn’t even hurt as many innocent people.

Your ideology is hurting countless people in the name of doing “good”. And I’m here to tell you that your “good” MUST be stopped.

    March 8, 2024 at 12:21 pm

If we are rejecting authority as Clint says, why are so many pushing for authoritarian leaders who want to strip certain groups of their human rights, enforcing even more authority over us? There was a person running for office in NC who even suggested women should not be allowed to vote. That’s half the population without a voice? If we are rejecting authority, why are we pushing ourselves towards a Christian Taliban? Irony? Insanity? Or can we blame AI?

  3. @remyllebeau77

    March 8, 2024 at 12:55 pm

If you don’t want to be demonized, then stop ending the lives of the unborn. Stop being champions AGAINST the precious human right of free speech. Stop ALL of your actions against our precious human right of self-defense. And these 3 things are just the beginning.

There is no desire to “bridge the gap” on one side. Didn’t you see what happened when a few Republicans dared to work with Democrats? They were censured, and their work was ordered to be discarded. NO MORE BOTH-SIDISM.

That’s all nice and everything. But the bottomline is: they don’t need to agree to work together.

You see, there is really no need to bridge political divides or attempt to remove polarization. In fact, I think being divided is great. No one side is trying to subdue the other side. That’s the way it should be.

All this bridging and stuff, you are watering down the opinions of both people, and that’s a bad thing.

Listen, Im sure these people’s hearts are in the right place, but this is silly and childish. She didnt use “plaid people” as an example to not offend anyone, she did it because the analogy falls apart in a real world scenario. Take something simple like abortion: anti abortion people believe that abortion is murder, pro abortion people believe that a woman’s fundamental civil liberties are being taken away by carrying an unwanted pregnancy. Theres no middle ground there.

I am from India and we are facing a similar situation here. In the last 10 years, I have to stop talking with a number of my friends and relatives because it has literally become impossible to talk some sense with them. So how did we reach here?

We reached here because someone is feeding them with misinformation through WhatsApp groups that they have joined secretly and that gives them so much teeth to talk about many issues which otherwise they would have not known about and remained silent. That is the root cause of this societal tension.

And this looks like an international phenomenon because this is happening in Brazil, in England, in US and in many other democratic countries.

Rather than trying to find a solution and treating this as a problem, we should consider it as a phase that will pass on, yes some democracies would be destroyed, but those that will survive would emerge stronger!

Like the gun example, they probably still don’t agree, but they could have gotten into how they deal with that disagreement, just to expand the example.

On a more general note, I wish everybody spoke the way they both do when facing opposing views. It was great to see composure from both of them and throwing jokes at each other.

The lady said that no one wants to be outcasted for thinking different of their group , so basically thats nature ways most animals and humans were programmed by evolution as a way to survive to always belong to a group no matter what , so by doing the opposite thing humans would have to fight against their own nature so that would take as long as it took to become the way it is , took millions of years of evolution to program it will take the same to reprogram , so basically humans will desapair before evenn that happens..
