Late last week, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission chair Gary Gensler said that he was “proud to serve” the agency, which some are taking as a hint at an upcoming resignation. 1:32 actually did the math for this at one point and found that if you want to make a solar powered car you could use in traffic I believe the math mean that you’d need about 4 square meters of solar panels to move something that weighs about 500 kg with driver at an acceptable rate in daily traffic.
to make something like that do highway speeds you’d need a super smooth body and basically no frontal area. possible, but very very hard to pull off, and that’s before you get to regulations.

Some supposed “car enthusiasts” asking why a Miata is a cool car in a very pejorative way, don’t even realize how much ignorance they are revealing about themselves and their lack of knowledge about what makes an objectively great car (especially when it comes to handling and driver/machine connection). They clearly are not car enthusiasts, but just speed junkies.

February 7, 2024 at 6:51 pm
Computers are not the reason today’s cars often don’t last as long. On the contrary, a properly designed computer system will likely outlast the mechanical parts of the car.
The reasons why cars don’t last as long anymore are:
– optimization. 70s cars were ridiculously overengineered, which is why they last longer
– corporate greed: it seems companies in the 70s understood more than today that they have a duty to society, and they didn’t penny pinch their engineers or production facilities as they do today, which led to better quality products.

the maintainably actually also has a big impact on the ecological footprint. Modern cars are often “repaired” by replacing a whole module consisting of many parts instead of only the broken part. That creates more waste but is more costefficent for the manufacturer but also more expensive for consumers. Why? Because companies love money.

Another thing to remember with older cars vs newer cars, there is more in a newer car that can “total” it, meaning cost of repair exceeds value of the vehicle. Crumple zones and air bags being huge sfety features that save lives, are also much more costly to repair or replace. Air bags can go off at fairly low speed that may not result in a lot of physical damage, but having them go off will most likely total a car that is more than a few years old.

Buying a BEV is non-senical for a guy like me. I’m a petrolhead and I like the way my car sounds. I don’t care for acceleration of the line, or about instant torque. I care about noises, and smells, and the character of a normal ICE car. Retrofitting my ICE car with an EV conversion kit, also makes more sense to me, because BEVs are extremely ugly and have all those electrical “features” I don’t want or need. I don’t want 360 cameras. I have 3 mirrors. That’s enough for me.

On the solar powered car, not even a mention of the Aptera? It can charge 40 miles in a day, has a range of up to 1000 miles on a single charge, can charge with the sun, 100v wall power, or a fast charger. On a 50kW charger, it can add 500 miles of range per hour. The 40 miles per day solar charge, that can give you free commute miles every day. To top it off, the 1000 mile range version is only $50,000 which is less than the more popular brands. The company has had funding issues, but the first editions should be out this year.

Why do older cars last longer than newer ones? Because car manufacturers have been gradually conditioning you to buy a new car every year.
@vcdrny
February 9, 2024 at 6:08 pm
One question that wasn’t honestly answered or dodged was. why older vehicles last longer than newer vehicles. Simple car companies figured out that selling you a car that can last 50 years is not a good investment. So they make one that will last 10 years at most. That way you are forced to buy a nother one sooner. It has nothing to do with the new technology. They can still make a car that could last even longer. But they won’t.
@Anthonyjt12
February 9, 2024 at 6:12 pm
I was talking about this to a patient yesterday. If someone tried to sell me a car and told me I had to replace the transmission in 7 years, no matter what, I would never buy it. That’s where EVs are today. The other issue is relying on circuit boards to keep a car running. In 30 years, it will be impossible to replace the circuit boards even at the component level because the electronics burn together. It will be interesting to see the industry that develops that will keep these vehicles running over the long haul. The technology to do that does not exist at this point.

07:55. So basically, you’re stating that a vehicle with limited computers (or none) has the capability of lasting over 50 years & a brand new one won’t last 10. So, in a sense, the materials to build new ones are being used up substantially more because they are far less reliable for long-time use.
Huh. So much for saving the planet…..
@hamhouke
February 9, 2024 at 6:47 pm
At some point within the lifetimes of our children – and maybe us, there will be no human drivers allowed on any public road. It simply will make no sense to allow an ape behind the wheel anymore. That is gong to upset a lot of apple carts and disrupt a lot of revenue streams.
-Car insurance will have to be overhauled if car companies become directly liable for crashes.
-Vehicle driving codes and enforcement will essentially disappear, as they will just be baked into the AI driver.
-There will be no more intoxicated driving, distracted driving, or using a car as a weapon.
-No one will run out of fuel/energy as all vehicle parameters will be validated by the AI driver before the trip starts.
-Speed limits will increase dramatically and accidents will all but disappear as all AI drivers coordinate movements.
-There will be no more minimum driving age or even driving licensing. Driving schools will disappear.
-Long trips are going to be awesome. Just get in, lay down and go to sleep. You will be there when you wake up!

For flying cars, “You don’t have to worry about pedestrians or other vehicles”…that is only half-true. EVs are trash, hybrids are aight, combustion, especially diesel is the best. New cars are trying to implement subscription services for everything, including the parts themselves as theyre meant to break so you keep putting money into a depreciating asset. Well made combustion engines hold their value very well even after 30-40 years. Nobody wants to buy EVs especially after what happened with Hyundai, big cities such as new york dont have anywhere near the required infrastructure to support even 10% of the population to own one. Plus there’s the very glaring issue with lithium and cobalt mines in Africa that are literally destroying the land and rendering it unusable for centuries. I think it was mercedes or bmw that wanted to charge you $/month for heated seats LOL. Lastly another issue is that if corrupt government decide they want to enslave society, they can just shut your EV off remotely, can be done by hackers and car thieves as well because new cars are really poorly designed and cheaply made, 9 out of 10 you look at are trash. Very rarely will you find a diamond in the very rough.

chemical engineering student here. i know we focus much more on safety and accident prevention because of the catastrophic nature that a chemical plant failure can have… but you absolutely better _not_ take the steering controls out of a level 5 autonomous vehicle. why would you? that’s an engineering control that can prevent accidents, it’s already part of the conventional way vehicles are built so it makes your cost-benefit analyses simpler, and it allows the vehicle to be operated manually if there’s ever a problem with the computer systems controlling the self-driving controls. there are no meaningful downsides, except perhaps minor cost implications or ruining the aesthetic for the rich people who want to have a cocktail party in their car. every engineer’s priority one obligation to the world is to make it as safe as we possibly can. don’t dream so hard about your cars that you forget that.

12:50, that’s a good thing. When an Airplane fails, and entire fleets get grounded, if it’s determined not to be pilot error, fault is placed on the Aeronautic company that made the airplane. That level of liability incentivized companies to make airliners statistically SAFER than walking down an empty sidewalk.
We already have a template of laws and rules for aeronautic vehicles, and using the same rules for cars will only make cars even safer.

HAhaha. He says “tesla built it for their cars, but other manufacturers though it was a good engineering option”
As if tesla hadn’t been offering their services since the beginning. And the other companies are essentially being forced to now accept the standard due to range expectations, service grids, and design standardization effectiveness. This, after over a decade of denying Tesla a seat at the table with the NA manufacturers for not playing ball the way they had done for a century, working on different lobbyist terms, and other socioeconomic factors that has had the rest of the industry acting wholly in spite for Tesla in this past decade.
This isn’t something he could have just gotten this wrong by not remembering or mistaking or flubbing it. This has been a long contested point in the EV industry. But they just don’t want to pay a positive lipservice to Tesla. So they’re literally pretending it was a decision the other manufacturers came up with. I don’t care about Elon, or getting on some tesla bandwagon, I drive a Ford. But this is just boldface political scumbaggery.

Why do we keep using cars for transportation when they, even av EV, are the least efficient means of moving people? They kill pedestrians and other people. The take up massive amounts of land for roads and parking. They cost hundreds of billions per year to operate and maintain all of the infrastructure required. Cars should be the option of last resort, not the dominant option.

My biggest confusion is why UTEs never made it here in U.S. Would be my ideal vehicle. Same goes for the crazy truck design choices with 6 foot beds. I understand larger cabs and more interior space being desirable. Longer truck is heavier and more expensive. That still does not explain the height of trucks and ground clearance being priority on every model.

I generally agree with all the answers, but H2 is basically useless for transport. You can make SOME argument for fuel-cell vehicles, but simply burning the H2 produces NOx because it interacts with the air (containing N2 and O2). But, the H2 has about 1/4 the energy density of gasoline and must be kept VERY cold. Alternatively, it can be stored under very high pressure (way more than welding gas cylinders) but that adds far more weight than batteries for storage. It does not make sense at all. Ammonia actually makes more sense than H2 but even it is 1/3rd the energy density of gasoline.

I was debating between mechanical and electrical engineering when I was in high school. I went with electrical. But look at the specs of WWII fighter planes.
The P-38 Lightning was the first US military plane to do 400 mph. If engineers could do that in 1938, 30 years before the Moon landing why have they been redesigning cars for the last 30 years?
This is just about MONEY! American consumers are just going into debt for useless variations in junk because it looks cool. Humdreds of billions of dollars down a rat hole.

Regarding the question of whether a self-driving car could get a ticket, it seems obvious that yes, a cop should pull the car over, and give a ticket to the person responsible for the car, who should be at the steering wheel ready to take over if needed, anyway. It’d be like a “fix it” ticket for a burnt out tail light, but instead you’d have to fix whatever is causing your car to malfunction and break the law.

Objectively, modern cars last far longer than those of the 1970s or even 80s. According to the EPA, most cars in 1970 were at the end of their service by 100,000 miles (160K kms). By 2012, that average service life had doubled to 200,000 miles/320K kms, as had the average age of cars on the road, and typical age of cars when junked.
That’s not to say that dealing with electrical/electronics issues with contemporary cars won’t be an issue 15 or 30 or 50 years out for enthusiasts trying to maintain today’s cars as classics – those complex systems and parts will be harder to come by or replicate. But for the average consumer, cars today are giving far more miles and years of mostly trouble-free driving.

Modern cars aren’t really more environmentally friendly. I drive a 1979 SC. Will probably drive it my whole life. Compare that to someone replacing his/her car every 5 years? Old cars arent reliable as they were off the factory floor. Modern technology mixed with the old school stuff makes them as reliable as they ever will be. Not to mention theyre generally more rugged cuz crumple zones were not a thing. You can rebuild an old car with some tools and new gasket materials and old gaskets and sure, youd be staying faithful to how the manufacturer intended. But using modern gaskets, machining, and many other materials is what makes em more reliable. New cars today can go a lot farther and protect you much better than an old car could, but you can say goodbye to a lot of the self repair techniques.

One issue with flying drone cars: the noise. Take a small to medium drone that can maybe carry a decent sized camera, and consider how much noise it makes. Scale that up to carry even a single adult person, let alone multiple people plus cargo, and you get a lot more noise and a much larger power requirement. I don’t buy the answer given to why older cars outlast newer ones. Even if you get zero software upgrades, it could still run as-is. But it doesn’t. Get into the real answers that may be a bit uncomfortable for someone with your ties and connections. It is because car companies whittled away to save cos5 and weight, and skimped on engineering and testing. Now they are trying to dial it back in a little.
Also your answer for it is the cost for more environmentally friendly cars – wrong. And you should know this. The most environmentally friendly car is the one that already exists. Mpg savings over a car that is 20 years old will never overcome the environmental impact of making the new car.
@DarkElfDiva
February 14, 2024 at 7:50 pm
7:55 This guy would make a good politician. He has the ability to answer a question without technically lying, but also without addressing the real issue. It is absolutely true that the complexity of modern cars makes them more likely to fail. However, the major reason that newer cars don’t last as long is because the manufacturers have little to no incentive to build quality vehicles anymore. They absolutely could build a car that will last 20 years with no major repairs, but that takes time, effort…MONEY. It’s much easier and cheaper to pump out barely-functioning piles of junk that last 10 years if you’re lucky, and the customer comes back sooner and spends more money. And they can’t just go somewhere else for a better car, because, hey, EVERYBODY’S DOING IT! It’s honestly genius. Wish I’d thought of it.

He incorrectly explained spoilers. What he is referring to in the video is a wing. Wings provide downforce to help with handling characteristics like braking. Spoilers allow for better efficiency when moving fast, aka better gas mileage. Spoilers do this by spooling the air behind the car to help disrupt the air vacuum behind the car, which would pull the car back as it is moving forward. Most cars have spoilers. Race cars have wings.

why older cars outlast newer ones: newer ones are designed in a way that makes repair for a common person difficult. they literally design so that they know with a certain probability when the part or a mechanism will fail. its not that we dont know how to design long lasting machinery, we/they dont want to, because very few people would buy new stuff if the old is still working and is cheap to maintain. Thats why in F1 they used to have 1 engine for every race. because it was designed in a way to give maximum performance for a short period of time and then break down.
Im disappointed noone mentioned this in the comments, as this is sth we learn about at uni. simply put: because capitalism.

Forcing electric cars on people until the infrastructure supports it is dumb, I live at an apartment with no way to charge a electric car and I am not gonna hang around a charging station for an hour to fill my car up with electricity. With gas I can have my car ready to go again in a few minutes, cannot do that with an electric car yet. You can’t force electric cars on people until they have easy ways to charge the car.
