January 23, 2024 at 8:08 pm
does anyone know what model is that Taylor at 8:08?
@orionthatman9390
January 23, 2024 at 8:09 pm
Non music people will not realize how insanely impressive him singing those microtones is. With actual separation between the tones and not sliding.
@iau
January 23, 2024 at 8:10 pm
He’s very entertaining, but I don’t think he’s very good at answering these questions. Answers like “What is treble?Treble is high” and “Why do people play bass? Bass is important” are just not good answers.
@psylopanda2841

Sometimes I wonder if he is superhuman
@vinilosdetribal2
January 23, 2024 at 8:12 pm
He actually skipped a beat in the second 7 bar on the drums (check the 5-6-7 numbers rushing). Jacob proved human.
@ItsABOUTflamTIME
January 23, 2024 at 8:28 pm
It’s rushed but he does actually stay in 7. it might be hard to keep track of because the second bar is highly syncopated.

I’ve always wondered what makes major and minor chords so different and similar. Being structural opposites makes so much sense!

1:00 guitar holes are actually Helmholtz resonators, just like bass reflex ports on speakers. On most guitars they are tuned to around 60 Hz, contributing a great part to the bass sounds of the instrument.

05:14 when Jacob says that the chord E major is his good friend, I FULLY believe he is, in fact, friends with a combination of sound waves. With the concept and existence of a collection of certain vibrations.

January 24, 2024 at 6:46 pm
i genuinely think jacob collier is the most intelligent, most dexterous and brightest genius alive right now. the way he can understand and translate the sounds in his mind and apply and command his body to it is absolutely insane. but most importantly he is so kind and such a good human being. so the absolute madlad and i hope he knows he’s got it right and he is a treasure to mankind, if not the best of us.

It’s cool that he doesn’t always give a literal explanation for some things, it’s not how I would explain it I’m a very literal person but i guess that keeps it fun for him and everyone else. we also all have our own ways we approach music and our own way of seeing it so we all think about different musical ideas differently which is super cool

January 24, 2024 at 8:09 pm
I think is Bob Dylan’s lyrics somewhere : all the songs where sung”. So i have that question for a long time. What are the mathematical possibilities of a riff? And if today we would have used all. I don’t have the answer. But it is probably so high than billions songs would not be perfectly identical easily. My guess….And thinking about it, it depends on how many notes constitute the song’s riff. Probably of doing the same as another artist rely on how many. Short riffs are reproducible, and longer ones less if not none. I wonder a bit less why Pop has short riffs…

January 25, 2024 at 3:46 pm
minor chords sound sad because they are the exact opposite in physics with major chords…great explanation (duh). I think they sound sad because there is a crying sound in them, the crying sound of a human being but also many other animals like cats and dogs and even whales
@maniac612
January 25, 2024 at 4:18 pm
Ah Jacob Collier, the only guy who can pull off the electrocuted hipster grandma look

Why do people always teach minor is sad? It never felt sad to me. Sure it feels less excited than major. See, if I go to the park and sit on a bench, just watching people go by, got nothing else to do, I play a minor chord for it and I am completely happy. Minor is not sad, it’s just serious.
@snared_
January 26, 2024 at 1:02 pm
You didn’t answer why a minor chord sounds sad at all. If the two are direct counterparts (dual relationship) in physics, then why is the minor the minor one and major the major one?

Been following Jacob since he was 16. There isn’t a single person on earth with a greater natural understanding of music and harmony to the point of people wondering if he is even human because he is so talented 🙂 Despite the depth of his knowledge, he has a great gift of being a musical educator. He can make difficult things sound understandable. All of the people I aspired to being when I was young were on a pedestal but Jacob makes music accessible to everyone on their own level. Such a rare talent.

When you shout or produce any sound, you’re not just creating a single frequency or pitch. Instead, you generate a complex wave that includes a fundamental frequency (the pitch you hear) and a series of overtones or harmonics. These overtones are multiples of the fundamental frequency and are higher in pitch.
In a space like a cathedral, known for its reverberant acoustics, these characteristics come into play:
Reverberation: Cathedrals, with their large, often vaulted spaces and hard surfaces, are designed for reverberation. This prolongs the sound, allowing you to hear the sustained overtones more clearly.
Amplification of Overtones: Some of the overtones may be amplified by the cathedral’s acoustics. Each space has its own resonant frequencies — pitches that the space naturally amplifies due to its size and shape.
Harmonic Series and Major Chord: The interesting part is that the harmonic series (the series of overtones produced by any pitched sound) contains intervals that are components of a major chord. For instance, the second overtone is an octave plus a perfect fifth above the fundamental, and the fourth overtone is two octaves plus a major third. These intervals are key components of a major chord.
So, when Collier talks about the overtones “coming back at you” in a cathedral, he’s highlighting how the space’s acoustics can emphasize certain overtones in the harmonic series. If the emphasized overtones align with those of a major chord (which they naturally might, given the structure of the harmonic series), the reverberations could indeed give an impression of a major chord.
It’s a blend of the physics of sound, the unique architecture of cathedrals, and our innate perception of music that makes this phenomenon so fascinating and, in specific conditions, possible.

I love music but I have never understood it theoretically. It has always been, in essence, magic to me. I watched Jacob Collier perform in Paris and what he did LIVE was one of the most spectacular things I’ve ever witnessed when it comes to manipulating sounds. For him to say “I am a musician” is technically correct, but feels inaccurate 😅

As a drummer, the polyrhythms section was maybe the most insane. I regularly break out 4/3 or 3/2 polyrhythms as easy to understand examples (that still sound impressive when you show a non-musician). The idea of running 5 rhythms at the same time on one hand makes my head explode and I’ve been playing drums for 25 years. Gonna have to practice!
