So, America is a standout at crime, but that huge disparity was on a chart labeled ‘gun homicides,’ which we are clearly going to have an even bigger advantage in for cultural reasons and because we have many more guns and much laxer gun laws.

But citing that as a general homicide stat is dishonest. Our actual homicide rate is around 6.5 compared to most western European countries being around 1.2.

SO we are less than 6 times higher, compared to the hundreds of times higher her chart conveyed.

Clearly still a problem, but let’s not misrepresent data to make the problem seem even worse than it is.

She completely misunderstood the question about 1%. It’s not that 1% of cases are solved. It’s COLD cases that couldn’t be solved and remain on the shelves are being solved at 1% rate.

The best at murder rate was a dumb comparison. We are the only nation in the world with a second amendment as well. We can defend our lives with our guns. Other nations do not really have that luxury.

locals in my area suspect that there are two active serial killers. one being a strangler targeting younger women along the I-95 corridor in several New England states, but these killings are only like, one every other year. the other the police deny exist, but there have been a series of drunk young men drowning in the river after leaving the bar.
I’m curious what the odds are that these two trends are *actually * serial killers, and not just random murder/accidental deaths that happen to line up.

Statistically most murderers are male, and most murders of men are committed by other men. You see different statistics in different places but whilst 2 out 5 female murder victims are killed by their partner, 1 in 50 of male victims are killed by their partner.

There are two groups in America, conservatives and liberals. Each group has a very VERY loud and vocal 5%, who are basically at war. The conservative 5% are winning the gun thing rn. The other 90% of us just go about our lives and don’t really pay attention to it.

Two family annihilation events have happened in the town I live in in the past year. One was a well circulated case where a man killed his three sons in front of his wife, but the other was a woman who killed her entire family and herself in front of the police because they were getting evicted. I think it’s unfair to say that “family annihilation is when a man kills his spouse and kids”. Family annihilation is when anyone kills their entire family. She seems pretty sexist, tbh. Shame she influences law and crime, this is why women get such lenient sentences in court.

Whilst it’s true that serial killers would be easier to catch than in previous years due to DNA and increased surveillance, there are still unknown persons who are remaining undetected, the sheer number of missing women in Canada for instance has convinced me that is a case of one or more people commiting those crimes that could be serial killers that remain undetected.

  38. Brian Waldorf

    November 1, 2023 at 8:50 pm

“I might disagree on this one. Our murder rates in the 90s was [sic] extremely high. Then we did see a big dip in the 2000s, 2010s, so it was sort of high in the 90s, it went down, and then the last five years, and particularly the last two years, we’ve really seen it spark back up again. During that period of time, gun ownership increased in this country over time.”

So murder rates went down for 25 years while gun ownership went up. At the least you could say there’s no correlation.

  48. Jon S

    November 2, 2023 at 2:51 pm

The reason the Zodiac killer was never caught is because there’s no such thing as “the Zodiac killer.” The letter writer was probably not a serial killer, having killed Paul Lee Stine in a rush to gain credibility with the police and *maybe* Raymond Davis in 1962. Although I think Raymond Davis was another killer entirely.

At least some of the other suspected Zodiac victims (women or couples) were likely killed by the same person, but that person wasn’t in contact with the police.

The reason police never caught “the Zodiac killer” is because the police are looking for one person who could have committed a range of crimes that are inconsistent with a single murderer.

Increase in homicides during Covid was because of domestic abuse situations. It had nothing to do with de-policing.

  54. Claire P

    November 2, 2023 at 7:53 pm

I think something she should’ve mentioned but didn’t is that every single one of these studies she’s referencing is going to be heavily subjected to selection bias. If 50% of murders are unsolved like she said at the beginning, then there’s no way to know if for instance murderers or serial killers are more likely to be drawn to certain careers or start at a certain age in general, or if the killers who get caught are more likely to do these things. Is it that murders are impulsive and poorly thought through, or is it that solved murders tend to be impulsive and poorly thought through? There could be a CSI effect among criminals. If that CSI effect made them less likely to get caught, that would introduce selection bias and confounding bias to your sample, and it would be impossible to identify in a study like she’s saying. It’s impossible to get a random sample of criminals, you can only get a sample of criminals who got caught, so any statistical test that assumes random sampling is automatically useless for generalizing the results to all criminals of that type.

  55. AF Merino

    November 2, 2023 at 8:25 pm

De-policing is never the answer. It does remove the funds for police but it also removes the necessary protection the public needs.

There are a couple motivations for serial killers she forgot to mention which are thrill and comfort(profit). Thrill is adreline rush related comfort is killing for money(Inheritance and bigger share of a business). Serial killers can also kill for multple motivations. Many nurse killers are allowed to continue there activities because hospital leadership is worried about bad press for the hospital.

  62. multa-nomina

    November 3, 2023 at 1:44 am

Control, power, and delusion is what law enforcement wants you to think motivates most serial killers, because it’s easier for them to explain away the real reasons, which usually have to do with inequalities and other issues in society

  63. multa-nomina

    November 3, 2023 at 1:47 am

There is a clear distinction between psychopaths and sociopaths. Psychopaths have a natural inclination to be the way that they are, basically giving them more experience with controlling themselves while sociopaths are formed by their circumstances and their actions are less controlled and can be triggered. This is basic stuff, lady.

Murder rates solved @ 50% is undeniably atrocious. As much information is being collected on us, how are so many of these detectives not able to make a good accurate arrest on 1/2 of people killing people. What if it was my Mom? They should track and publish to the public on a regular basis detective confirmed solved with prosecution rates. Don’t make fun of couch detectives online, apparently we need more eyes, more brain power. Just need to make sure the public knows how to stay within the law with those activities. Make a Crime Stoppers type way to leave tips that reaches directly to the Detective responsible after it is checked for viability. Take the help, it is out there being offered freely by people who want justice for victims

To be fair to the police vs podcasters in terms of solving crimes, the police has to follow a lot of rules and might be working on several things at once. Podcasters or amateurs detectives sort of do whatever they want to get the answers they want…

Her statement on homicide rates being up significantly is false. They are nearly half what they were 30-40 years ago. In 1991 there were 9.8 homicides per 100,000 people and in 2022 there were 6.3 homicides per 100,000. Homicides did go up during the pandemic but that was to a whopping 6.8 per 100,000. So still nothing compared to historic rates. Her tying the false claim to a reduction in the number of cops makes me think that she is unknowingly repeating what many call copaganda. (i.e., feeding the narrative that crime is higher than it actually is. And that police who in many areas account for a quarter to third of city budgets are underfunded.)

That graph is gun homicide. While speaking, you make it sound like what we’re seeing is homicide in general. Don’t be misleading.

The difference is that psychopaths are born, sociopaths are made.
In other words, psychopathy is something that you’re born with. Always. 100% of the time! Sociopathy is not. Sociopathy is something that gets triggered at some point in your life.
Other than that, both conditions are largely the same.

Wait a minute, that chart said “Gun Homicides” and I see the US is at the top in comparison. Austria was on there which is a shall issue state versus the US is a mixed bag. Skewing the research a little there. Plus we know suicides are the biggest contributors to gun related deaths.

A criminologist would probably have better knowledge than I do but I saw something the other day about writers on a crime show bringing in a former offender to help them with writing cases, making sure it’s believable etc. After some time, the ex-offender said the writers didn’t need him anymore because they were so good. It’s all information and skills which can be learnt and adapted. So yeah, crime shows can make people better at committing crimes and hiding them.

The Populace really has an extremely twisted sense of what psychopaths/sociopaths really are. Most of them go through their lives completely unnoticed having learn how to hide most of their condition. These extreme cases of psychopath killers are like it says extreme cases. There needs to be stuff in their upbringing and environment to make them go of the deep end

Specifically referencing America’s homicide rate at 4.382, what are those other countries real rates when looking at all methods of homicide, not just “gun homicides per 100k”. In the UK for example, common people don’t have access to firearms, so knife crime is much more prevalent. It would be interesting to see how the gap changes (I’d assume narrows) when including these other countries main drivers of homicide.

Her statement about 50% of crimes solved is a wonky answer. I don’t think it’s correct and she still didn’t answer the question asked. First of all they wouldn’t know if there’s an increase in criminal activity because there’s was so few officers and just people in general back in the day, so it’s hard to determine a control number. It was way easier to commit a crime and investigations were very poor.

Does anyone have a source or evidence of the widespread pull-back of police presence across the US, after the murder of George Floyd? She made that claim, which I’ve frequently heard, but I’m wondering if there’s anything to back it up. I know there was a cultural movement to reform policing but I’m wondering how much that actually happened.

It’s always disheartening to see how gun violence talks taint people immediately. I am referring to how her use of the chart when discussing homicide rates has made people assume she has an agenda and is being political here. Yeah she used a gun violence chart, and yeah would be great to specify that, but look how the vast majority of homicides occur. Hint, it’s not knives, fists, or vehicles. That doesn’t make her have a political agenda, it just means in this 20 minute snippet on crime she missed to specify that or it was edited out. These are heavily edited, although usually very well, for time constraints. That question that brought out the chart could be a documentary on its own. And yes, the US has a disproportionate gun violence rate.

Just wanted to say that someone not being able to figure out someone’s emotions and mimicking them back is also common in autistic people, who are no more or less violent or empathetic than neurotypical people. Autistic people often have hyper-empathy, we just might not be able to recognize that someone is communicating that emotion to us, and thus come across as cold and uncaring when really we never want to burt someone’s feelings and make them feel ignored/dismissed/ what have you. It’s about not being able to quickly recognize the visual and tonal ques of someone’s emotion, but that doesn’t mean we can’t relate and feel empathy for it once we realise whats going on. Autistic people can have problems verbalizing and outwardly expressing emotions as well as recognizing others doing so, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have plenty of empathy to go around, just needs to be a bit more on the nose for some of us. Can’t tell you how many neurotypical friends have thought I didn’t care about their problems, but I thought they were being very blazé about them and reciprocating the “vibe” because you don’t want to like something is a bigger or smaller issue than the person living through it themselves in most situations. I’ve literally cried because I made some feel bad by not picking up on their feelings and responding accordingly, so obviously not that I lack empathy, i know it hurts to feel minimized and unheard, I just couldn’t tell thats what was going on until it comes up later.
Please don’t go around assuming people with this trait lack empathy, because its often not the case. Autism is currently diagnosed at 1 in 36 kids (autism, despite being a life-long, unchangeable thing, is almost always measured in children for some reason) and psychopathy is only about 1 in 100 people, so chances are someone doing this “tell” still isn’t a psychopath.
