This is probably one of the best interviews I have ever seen, Wired or otherwise. Well-shot, well-cut, well-produced, with a highly articulate and knowledgeable subject. Major props to all involved!

This place should be off limits already. So many deaths, so much garbage so much waste. Enough.

Seems like everyone involved is part of the overcrowding problem…inexperienced or experienced..You could climb somewhere else. You could take a picture somewhere else….Is Everest really so special at the 4th picture? The 5th? Especially when you know theres overcrowding and you turn up anyways? Like am I crazy?

The elevation of these mountains is mind boggling. I hiked Mt Whitney, at around 13k ft I was taking a break every 15 steps. I can’t imagine 29,000ft even with supplemental.

There are things I have done and would do just to check a box. Climbing Everest is not one of them. If you want to check a box, don’t climb a mountain that’s killed climbers with years of experience.

I enjoy the casual hiking and mountaineering, and even though I know I’ll never be in the physical shape to do Everest, I can say with all honesty that after I learned the mess it was in, with all the trash and now all these sanitation concerns at base camps, any ounce of appeal I ever saw in that mountain is all gone. Plenty of beautiful views near by.

It’s hard to have any empathy for the stereotypical American that gets hurt or killed climbing Mt. Everest because they want to check it off their bucket list. In the end the ones who make it are just leaving the natural environment in worse shape by leaving their waste behind. It’s a completely unnecessary thing to do.

Her information on the trash issue is out-of-date and misleading. The Nepalese government has required expeditions to break down their camps, seal up all waste in barrels, and carry it out of Base Camp for decades. Even the South Col, which was a heaping mess of discarded oxygen bottles, has been cleaned up thanks to environmental expeditions. People pick up “bugs” in villages along the way. to the mountain. They may be getting sick because they’re not practicing proper hygiene. Bouts of diarrhea and vomiting can also be due to altitude sickness.

as much as i can appreciate the human appetite for exploration and adrenaline seeking adventures. i honestly find my reaction to people completing the summit to mount everest with disgust. the efforts of thousands of tourists has left the mountains natural environment completely destroyed and littered with trash, human waste, and human remains. hundreds of people die, most of the time due to inadequate training and adaptation to the harsh environment. that natural beauty of the tallest peak in the world has been lost to people wanting an ego boost.

When I was a kid, I went through a phase where I was really into Mount Everest, and I started reading tons of books about it. I read the “Everest” trilogy by Gordon Korman, in which a group of kids(!) attempt to make the summit. The main kid gets high-altitude pulmonary edema, and one of the kids sits down and never gets back up. It was very graphic and scary but also educational. Now I’m very content with never attempting that climb 😅 I’m much more of a hiker than a climber anyway.
