True, but he left out my own personal conspiracy theory: All the other conspiracy theories are based on hatred in general and racism specifically. Hence a war on “woke” waged not merely by those with their heads in the sand, but those who can’t tolerate the mocking of a past in which their dark hearts and evil, racist souls still reside. Still, I enjoyed the genuinely LOL moments!

Earlier today I had a conversation with a group of Christians … not just run of the mill Christians … but people who had status in the local community … intelligent, successful people … people from several different church denominations … people who frequently preached to congregations of believers. They all insisted that they believed that God made the world in six days … as it says in Genesis. My response to them saying this was: “Why should I believe you? You might be lying?” This caused them to adopt verbal and gestural behaviour that I’m familiar with … behaviour that people who lie engage in when their lies are challenged. One of my interests is watching videos on Youtube of criminals being questioned by the police.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I am on the fringe as a disabled guy who wants a girlfriend. I’ve experienced the same treatment from single women in my dating pools as a conspiracy theorist would get. Almost all of them.
I’m also not classically disabled. Since I look and act normal, people have treated me like I’m one of those conspiracy theorists.
Everyone, except for employers, seems to want me to get a job.
But even though I’m disabled and never worked, I still deserve acceptance. I still deserve love. I don’t deserve to be treated like a conspiracy theorist.
Sean Dunbar
September 13, 2023 at 8:20 pm
The whole talk is about how conspiracy theorists don’t deserve the treatment they receive.

Unfortunately being empathetic, polite and reasonable just doesn’t work with conspiracy theorists.
I’ve debated with a lot of them online over the last 6-8 years, mostly flatearthers, and I’m always civil and polite to them; I’ll answer their questions, point them towards experiments, facts, articles, draw some images and diagrams to explain my point, etc, but after a few interactions it’s always _them_ who start getting aggressive, rude and haughty, and they’ll hop from topic to topic to avoid admitting they don’t have an answer, or that they were wrong..
And usually it ends up with them leaving a final comment explaining how they’ve “won”, and then they block me immediately after posting it.
Of course they get abuse from people too, but neither abuse, nor being nice to them, has any effect whatsoever.
I think the _real_ problem for most of them is that either they get a “high” from their conspiracy, because it makes them feel smart, or else they jumped on the conspiracy train too quickly and can’t admit they were wrong about their conspiracy, their ego just won’t allow them to admit they fell for it.
It’s kind of like when you’re having a heavy argument with a friend or partner and you suddenly realise that they might be right and you might be wrong, and you get that bad feeling in the pit of your stomach, and your brain telling you that you’re an idiot, and you have to decide whether to come clean or to keep arguing even though you know you are wrong.
And a lot of conspiracy theorists have far too much invested in their conspiracy to leave it all behind and “face the shame”.

BS don’t excuse their damage. Empathy and understanding won’t be returned.
This is a great metaphor for religion. It’s complete bs, but society is guilted into tolerance, ignoring the damage.
Unacceptable and damaging behavior is immoral.

I get what this talk is supposed to be about and what his overall approach is to the general public in addressing the subject matter. But this whole talk, the whole video, has been nothing but theory crafting and generalization. “What if we look at what is causing the need for..” sounds to me he is asking how we can look for the source or origin point of all this. Harr, harr, he wants those of sound mind to essentially create their own conspiracy theory that has newfound potential to eliminate conspiracy theories.
Throughout the video, he provides no solid starting point or lead in order to begin tackling and addressing this. He mentions words like empathy and understanding, but with today’s theorists that is equivalent to talking to an actual brick wall.
At no point was the idea of creating a conspiracy TRUTH made in which people perform at the “cadence” and styling of conspiracy theorists in essence drowning out the false conspiracies. It is after all one way to definitively smother many existing conspiracies by a literal shouting match. The louder side wins. This may sound harsh, cruel, and demeaning to the point of basically belittling another. But it also does sober the notion that “the Earth is flat.” Because throughout the scheme at some point someone will make mention of rituals or activities… maybe even an annual event. And all a conspiracy theorist has to do is try it out in an effort to disprove its validity. And then bingo-was-his-name-o, you’ve got a conspiracy theorist who participated in disproving their own initial belief!
In the end all this proves is that if we want something badly enough, then we need to be willing to spend the time, energy, (money, blood, sweat, and tears?) and other resources to essentially perform at a devout level. Where act becomes habit and belief becomes law; the very life-blood of your day to day tidings.
So, how badly do we want conspiracy theories and theorists to go away or cease?

Important point forgotten here is government’s hands in conspiracies themselves. US Government for example has committed false flag attacks to justify war like in the Gulf of Tonkin. Government is involved actually in crafting ridiculous conspiracies to cover up true ones like this one. Biggest progenitor of misinformation and disinformation is the US government specifically the three letter agencies, influential so called “non profits”, and federal reserve.

If I was the governement and I actually had spy birds I would pay a smart young man to create a movement called ‘Birds Arent Real’ and then convince everyone that it was just a farse and there had never been no such thing as “Spy Birds”. I would then finance a popular billionaire like Elon Musk to buy twitter so that the most famous bird brand disappeared from the face of the planet overnight, to make sure anything related to birds stayed out of the news and google searches. At that point I would slowly start to deploy our bird drones knowing that anyone suspiscios would just get perceived as a crazy person or anyone complaining about tweets would just be considered an Elon hater.

A lesson in trolling:
1. Create the most ridiculous premise for a conspiracy theory. So ridiculous, you have no believers in it, just others who are in on the joke.
2. Make the show big enough to garner media attention. (most difficult)
3. Finally come clean that it was all a lie. (Preposterous notion since it was so ridiculous in the first place.)
4. Keep trolling (getting attention) by turning the tables on the reasonable folk and chastising them for not being “understanding” to his group of trolls.
You can tell he’s very proud of the attention he’s received. Well done!

Evidence Matters
September 16, 2023 at 8:32 pm
Conspiracy Theorists form views for emotional reasons, not as a result of a rational, objective investigation of the available evidence. If someone forms a view without consideration of the evidence, they will not change their views as a result of being exposed to the evidence. Conspiracy Theorists are generally very uneducated and with extremely poor complex thinking skills. They are an embarrassment to human progress.

Yeah, why would a group of people meet in a room to plan how they will profit from other people’s misery. That simply does not exist. Narcissists do not exist. Governments never lie or hide reality. Banks care about your well being. Intelligence agencies do not interfere with social media. Facebook does not polarize. Social Media improves your dopamine levels. George Carlin is actually alive. And Einstein never said to question everything.
‘What made them vulnerable’. Lets help these people to think like us😂
This talk promotes not to stigmatize or polarize, by doing exactly that. But it’s a nice fairytale by someone who grew up in a world of gold and rainbows.

I saw a report a couple years ago about this and it was reported as satire. Never heard anyone who believed it. 🤷 I do agree with him on how to approach conspiracy theorists. We need to have real conversations with people, not condemn them. Condemnation does not change what they believe, it strengthens it. And they don’t go away they just get more angry and disconnected from society, and reality

There’s a lot of science behind what he concluded about convincing conspiracy theorists; I wish he had cited some. If you find someone who believes something truly insane (I don’t mean just wrong or self serving, but something you cannot imagine being reasonable), generally one of four things is happening: 1) they are joking or lying for some reason, 2) they are suffering from conditioning or mental issues, 3) it really isn’t that insane and the two of you are failing to communicate or 4) it really isn’t insane and you are the one suffering from something. Only a small subset of the first category deserves insults and derision, whereas insults harm the other 3.

I’ve been saying to anyone who will listen, how are we going to repair the damage to our country that the divisive rhetoric from tRump and his supporters have been spreading for years. Peter understands that the only way forward is through compassion and conversation.

Those people you are talking about think getting educated is getting indoctrinated. If you don’t think and act like they do, they will not want to belong in your group.

I remember when TED featured academics and professionals. Now it’s just pranksters dressed like slobs. Despite his claims, no one ever “picked up” on this story other than reporting the obvious joke that it was. Did anyone actually pay to sit in this audience? They should get a refund if they did.

This is a high schooler’s idea of being perceptive. There is no path to improvement here, just naive and idealistic whining.

What about the topic that some “conspiracies,” e.g., and not partisan, around COVID, Hunter Biden, Trump, turn out to be true. We seem to acknowledge their eventual truth in a stealth way, as if we really always knew, rather than confronting that we as society said they were false. That approach seems to feed additional unfounded conspiracies. We collectively need to admit when things turned out to be true, and why we got it wrong the first time, in order to minimize those truths subsequently generating many more falsehoods.
