I imagine the staffing is a problem. If you ever had a job working with the public you know how it is. Same with flying, crazy people opening doors mid-flight, obese whales asking for multiple seats for free, people who don’t know how to handle their kids, drunks, druggies, karens, and other whinos. So many options these days to make money working for yourself and not having to deal with people or corporations, no wonder the huge turnaround of workers or absence of them. I am so glad I never have to travel, all my family lives within ten miles of me so airlines, traffic, gas prices, etc. have no effect on me. But good luck to the rest of you!

I already have CLEAR, which I very much like at my local airport because the line just to get to the security checkpoint is often 45 minutes or more. At other airports, there isn’t much of a wait to get to the checkpoint; the long wait is after the first TSA checkpoint when you’re waiting for the X-ray machines.

Guess I should add Pre-check. Not having to take off my belt and shoes would be nice.

Since so many airports have essentially allowed the large airlines to operate as monopolies at them, the best airline is the one that has the most flights going to your destination for a particular trip.

In reference to the first question, Frontier and Spirit actually do fly internationally. Maybe not Europe or Asia, but the Caribbean, Central and South America. Same goes for Jetblue.

  54. Kathryn Black

    June 22, 2023 at 4:24 pm

But TSA Precheck doesn’t help if you have replaced joints. I have two replaced knees and they won’t let me go through the plain metal detector. I do get walked to the scanner and jump the line but my luggage is over on the Precheck belt. Really annoying!

  55. Daniel Sanchez Ojalvo

    June 22, 2023 at 4:31 pm

On the exchange rate thing, what this guy says is true. However, if you are paying in 2 or more instalments, exchange rate risk will fall on you. So baiscally when paying the second installment you may have to pay less or more than the applicable exchange rate when you made the transaction. Be aware that the fx risk is yours to bear and may even negatively offset those fees.

  56. Derek Gindlesperger

    June 22, 2023 at 5:14 pm

Also: Staples now offers TSA pre-check approval stuff.

I recently went on a trip with a friend. I have TSA pre check.she has clear. She almost missed her flight I was quick and relaxing ready to board

    • Den I//Noble Russkie

      June 23, 2023 at 7:10 pm

Also: TSA Pre is in every airport in the US. Clear is only in the big Int’ls, if that. I fly between SFO and PDX most often, one has Clear, one doesn’t— Precheck it is

    • T

      June 23, 2023 at 7:52 pm

@Den I//Noble Russkie some people have both as well

  59. Anthony GUERIN

    June 23, 2023 at 5:06 pm

Hm wtf is Global Entry ? Not sure I’m understandng right. You pay to basically board faster and skip through checks ?

    • TheBlueWind

      June 28, 2023 at 12:13 pm

If you never leave the country, don’t bother with Global Entry. (Plus, it is notoriously difficult to get appointments).

If you fly maybe 3 times a year domestic, TSA is very helpful.

But both programs are only valid for 5 years, then you have to renew.

  60. BWolfe

    June 23, 2023 at 7:17 pm

My experience with Frontier; they sold my wife and I tickets to a flight that NEVER EXISTED. Got an email that the flight was canceled so I called customer service to reschedule. The lady said “we don’t fly out of that airport this time of year. I don’t even know how you managed to purchase these tickets”.

    • TheBlueWind

      June 28, 2023 at 11:52 am

This can happen on several airlines (happened to me on SAS and United on separate occasions). Always use a credit card, so you can get your money back if this happens. And when booking a flight, always stay on the page you booked on (with the confirmation number, etc) until you get the confirmation email. Keep that digital paper trail. If for some reason the email never comes, SCREENSHOT that receipt, and keep time stamps for everything you do.

I sent a lengthy email to a travel insurance once (who gave me bad advice over the phone and was not going to cover my travel disruption) with time stamps, receipts, phone calls, the whole timeline to prove that I was right.

And even if they say NO the first time, KEEP TRYING. KEEP trying to prove your point.

It took 5 months, but eventually, that travel insurance gave me 3 grand back.

  69. trashpanda

    June 28, 2023 at 5:02 pm

Why would ANYONE ever buy Clear? PreCheck is $15/yr, CLEAR is $120/yr, they do EXACTLY THE SAME THING, and PreCheck is covered at more airports.
Do NOT buy both, you are literally throwing away money and getting NOTHING for it.
