I missed the most important part. What to do when you raffle up a slinkey? Throw it away?

  41. Shannon McStormy

    January 27, 2023 at 8:14 pm

    V. Cool. In my late 40’s I accidentally happened upon a Bullwhip/Whip Sport recreation club at a large public park. My partner and I were walking our 2 dogs (leashed) in the early evening. It was a big park and this Whip Group were over by themselves at one of the grilling spots just off one of the park pavilions. They had stuffed animals as targets hanging down on strings. There was about 35 people, and they were grilling, had a prodigious number of ample “sides,” and whipping targets. They did so once a month and were an otherwise fairly informal group. This was in the Midwest and they said they moved in-doors for the winter. One of the senior members took me aside and showed me the basics. I was hooked.

In the intervening decades, I had become a great grandmother. When not working on my Doctorate, my hobby absorbed my life: I appeared to be gifted and my usual perfectionist tendencies and innate self-discipline, I practiced (Even if I only had 30 minutes), nearly every day. By the time I stopped, I may have been in the top 25 “Whip Sport” practitioners in the Midwest, maybe even top 15 or close to the top 10.

I share this because I think these days of sitting in front of the PC or in our living rooms, we should all make the effort, minimizing with any discomfort or unpleasantness, and get. out. there ! Go out into the real world and do physical and/or social things. Do it regularly. Trust me when I say that as you get older, such activities get harder. The time to explore the world and the beautiful assortment of humans in it is when we are young.

Plus, you never know what you’ll find you like and/or are good at. My partner and I ballroom dance, as she did it during her Undergrad. She leads and I follow…..poorly. But when I picked up a Whip for the first time in that park…..It felt sort of like I was holding a weak form of lightning, still exciting and potent in my hands. My sweetie and I also play pool in a league, still do. We are both pretty awful but we still have a lot of fun. And there are some women in this pool league that are savagely talented. We have other friends, younger than us, who LOVE “paintball.” Others like fishing or hunting. We have one friend and she is a competitive shooter of those orange disks that get flung into the air….”Skeet Shooting” I think it’s called?

So, anyhoo……no matter what it is – Go out there and do it ! ! 🙂 Try multiple hobbies/activities/sports/music/etc., across a diverse range of areas. Something will stick and even if it doesn’t, maybe you’ll find a friend or more?

What i’m seeing is that the hand that moves the slinky must move in ONE direction at a time, no diagonal vectors in order to harvest as much kinematic energy as possible (idk if that’s even a word, in spanish is energia cinetica).
What she’s doing wrong is that she is trying to move the slinky by forcing the coil with her hand movement. The slinky will form the waves by itself, the hand should be a gentle guide. Doing the U is just to accumulate energy in the coil, but you pretty much can’t tell it what to do.

I wonder if he coined a lot of the terminology himself, or if other slinky artists did before him. I remember seeing the same video of the chinese guy doing it and I had the same reaction he did, I wanted to learn how to do it. It is probably just like juggeling. It is very easy to do the basics but it takes time for your brain to make it in to something natural. I can now juggle 3 balls till I get bored but it is hard to keep the movement going without dropping balls when you are just starting out.

This is so cool. I was performing similar tricks in my room as a kid with the metal Slinkys – until they bent or became too entangled. Awesome of Josh to take this to the next level of performance and exposure.
