Absolutely wild hearing that the price of video games has largely stayed consistent over a decade in America. Here in the UK when i was growing up, a Pokemon game would cost £30, now they’re more like £60.

A great story hooks me every time. I’ve played games and watched movies that were super rough, unpolished, poorly scored, etc just because the story was amazing. How compelling the story is will make or break a game or even a studio. Glen can talk his trade all day and I would listen to every minute of it.

    1. The games haven’t stayed the same price (the price increased to $60 over time, now it’s $70).
    2. The cost of games has increased. Yes.
    3. BUT SO DID THE MARKET. There’s more people buying them. The sales speak for themselves. It’s a massive entertainment market.

  28. Rachel Hughes

    November 17, 2022 at 5:09 pm

Elden Ring is hard because it’s done by the Dark Souls people, Fromsoftware. They don’t make easy games.
Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro. They are all notoriously very difficult, so it has kind of a niche market. Elden Ring is the first of their games to really reach the wider gaming community, so a lot of new players weren’t prepared for its playstyle.

About the pricing being the same at x2-x4 the cost: it’s also important to notice that piracy today is nothing compared to what it was 10 or 15 years ago (for many reasons). So while prices might be the same, revenue has grown a lot.

I feel the cost argument is a little invalid. The cost has risen to produce, but demand has risen with it. Obviously you will spend more if your consumer base grows, it’s the same with the movie industry. And when more competition comes in you have to compete, which usually means $$$, but that’s the same with almost any industry.

Extremely point by point video Well I will also say this here, Most people don’t understand the concept of “buying the dip” buying the dip is all about buying digital assets when their prices are down and selling off when the price rises. Holding is great, although trading is far more profitable. I was able to grasp the knowledge of trading cryptO assets early enough, but I was still limited due to my lack of technical understanding of how to analyze the digital market, all that changed when I encountered EXPERT POWELL I must confess it was easier to understand with the assistance of powell that has made me over good coin.

    Unpopular opinion

70€ isn’t enough for a game. Don’t take me wrong, I’m a poor student who struggles to pay full price

BUT, you pay maybe 20€ for cinema and you got max 3h of entertainment, you got an average of 20h of a game and you only pay 70€. That’s a 3h movie for 20 and 20+ hours for 70 …. .

    That’s not fair imo

I’ve watched so many interviews with him, I really love how passionate he clearly is.

  104. cory

    November 20, 2022 at 11:22 pm

He is very metrics / proven metas focused rather than understanding the experience at a more fundamental experience level. Its a practical way to make games but at the same time I feel like its not as helpful for new designers.

  111. PhAntom ChiEf

    November 21, 2022 at 12:02 am

When he says “expensive” I don’t know if he’s talking about time/money or is he talking about the console’s capacity for performance 🤔. Like certain assets may require thousands of polygon’s and that may utilize a significant part of a console’s limited amount of memory while you need to make sure there is some left for other assets. On the other hand the same asset may have taken many hours for an artist or engineer to create and it’s expensive that way since you have to pay people to do that stuff

  114. Bad Request

    November 21, 2022 at 12:14 am

working in the video game industry, i’ve seen characters and and storylines change drastically in short periods of time. one day a character is one thing, another day it’ll have a completely different posture, function and dialogue. story in games is constantly changing and adjusting during game development. it’s easier to make the story around the mechanics than to make the mechanics to fit a specific story.
for horror games i agree that sound is the biggest part of it, it sets the ambience, it can make you on edge, increases tension if done right, but i do think it’s more than just 50%, more like 70%. you can have a bare bones level and gameplay, but if you have a rock solid audio experience, it can be the scariest thing to experience. imo alien isolation did this extremely well. i played through it over 10x and every time i was constantly tense.

COD opened the flood gates for $70 a game, say goodbye to $60 but almost all games have in-game purchasable passes so in reality a game already costs way more than $60. Video games have made more money than ever and the name of the game is to make as much money as possible so the quality goes down. I disagree with Schofield when he says games have doubled/tripled/quadrupled. I would say more than half of the games that come out are not complete. They definitely look better than the old console games, doesn’t mean there’s “more” in the game.

Why do game companies think that initial and total sales are the be and alls of a ‘good’ game, surely that only indicates good marketing or a preexisting fanbase – Fewest refunds should be the talking point

I have a comment that seems new I have not heard of

I think the problem with consoles is there like demo’s there made in factorys and some employees don’t care about there jobs compare to the real console the owners have but I’m just saying .

On the cost. Yeah it’s gone up. But so many more people play games than 10 years ago. That’s why the price stays the same. Many publishers have games for service also.

60.00 dollars? More like 70.00 dollars to get into a game, and that doesn’t count your “Add-Ons/DLCs” that you’ll be faced with down the line.

at a time I was actually trying to pitch an idea that I had for a single-player 3rd person shooter game of a certain popular action movie in the past decade to publishers that I’d know would be a good fit and I myself be part of the project as the creative director but sadly no-one got back to me (and I don’t blame them) but who knows, maybe someday I could actually get it to be made…

Here’s a question I would really like answered: Just how stupid do game developers think their players are?

Every game today is stuck in permanent tutorial mode where it shows you what button to press for every action. Every object you can interact with is surrounded by a neon outline. The game prompts you when to switch characters or where to use specific abilities. Many games even show you where to stand with a glowing neon marker on the floor. You never have to have to think for yourself because the games tell you what to do every step of the way.

So I have to ask: Just how stupid do game designers think their players are?
