Threepio is programmed for etiquette and protocol. If he were to sneak around and chat to other droids via wireless it would be a violation of his function. Artoo just bleeping makes no sense.

Note: ALL droids in the Starwars-verse are hard wired to speak (or understand) ‘BASIC’ by default. Which, in their universe, means PFE, or Plain English. In the aforementioned scene, R2-D2 & C-3PO are more or less following their programming, but R2 is making a conscious decision to disobey a specific set of basic instructions in order to achieve his mission more effectively. This behavior is epitomic of a fully conscious and sentient A.I. being capable of thinking beyond it’s base programming.

  29. Rekuzan Rikudo

    May 2, 2020 at 9:16 pm

Beyamax is THE ultimate in health care A.I. and IS truly learning. I know you haven’t seen any of the T.V. show on Disney chan, but you can ACTUALLY watch Beyamax’s progression as he learns the ins & outs of the human world; namely, ART!

I’m surprised, Blade Runner is not included, neither the original, nor the new one. And he probably hasn’t seen Ex Machina in it’s entirety, that’s one of the best movies about AI, that I’m aware of.

I disagree with his opinion on C-3P0. Protocol droids are designed for interaction with biological sentients; he therefore would not have a data mode for talking to astromechs. And astromechs use beeping as data transfer. R2 is actually sending out far more sounds than we hear, on frequencies we can hear and frequencies we can’t.

And, no, Data, there’s nothing there but a program so advanced it seems like it’s alive. With some randomization (respond like this except when you respond like this in x% situations). Same with the androids in Humans. They actually said as much when the one android said the difference was 17 pages of code.

Although it got wacky in parts one movie I thought had a good representation of robots working with people was in ‘Runaway’.

also, when I think of autonomous driving cars I think of Total Recall’s ‘Johnny Cab’. We’re really close to being able to do ‘Johnny Cab’ today. We just need Robert Picardo robots.

Love love love the first Star Wars, but one thing I always thought, even as a kid was, Artoo’s mode of transportation is probably the WORST one there is for moving on Tatooine’s sand. In the novelization of Star Wars (written by Alan Dean Foster based on the original script) he actually is said to have “claws”, but I think that was just too hard or too expensive to implement for the movie. And of course it’s a little odd that Artoo works around human beings all the time but has no way to communicate with them except through Threepio.

i find it funny how this so called expert says “robots wouldn’t have to make sounds to communicate with eachother” well for one…. unless they have other means of communication(radio transceivers, direct connection downloading capabilities and what have you) and being that the droids in star wars do have an audio receiving and sending capabilities…. it’s not unlikely they’d actually talk to one another…. maybe not in actual words like people do. but maybe in some form of coded tones to convey masses of information in seconds, that full sentences couldn’t… much like the dial tones on old phones or something…. again if they don’t have any other means to talk to one another, audio communication is the only way…… well R2D2 could jack in and talk, but they show nothing that C3P0 can do it without being taken apart and wired in

Hall 9000 was given a secret mission to investiigate the TMI. The humans didn’t know this, and one of his prime directives was to keep them informed of every aspect of the mission accurately. This set up a paradox, two conflicting directives of equal importance. The only way to remove it was to kill the humans, but he coulsd only do it through inaction (deactivating the cold sleep pods, sealing an astronaut outsode with limited oxygen). It was the programmers fault.

AI in Video Games is an interesting little thing. On one hand, you have the programs written for the Nonplayer Characters, and randomizers for prize generation, and on the other, you have some games that actually feature Advanced AI units as part of the cast, usually the antagonist but occasionally an ally, sometimes both. The Mass Effect franchise features cases of both hostile AI, in-game and part of the narrative, and allied AI in the same sort of workings; Horizon Zero Dawn, which many have exposited as an excellent game, features an antagonistic AI in-narrative and play but the AI for all of the characters the player interacts with through the Player Character has its own little features to make the world feel more alive.

I really think in humans / real humans there is a big problem that robots thinking about “love” does not reflect any purpose when they “wish” to build up a lucky family as long as there is no real life-cycle to evolve as they can’t have children and should know about this. so why want to make a family with humans if they don’t want to be slaves and make bad experience with humans.

I have written books where the space ships have an AI unit, able to fly the ship and everything all on their own, but is used as a flight companion and make it real simple for one person to pilot the ship and look for things, and communicate with other ships in micro seconds. And many times they seem to have more personality than their organic counterpart.

It would be cool to see AI implemented in gaming, for example, in a horror game it would assess what makes you tick and tune the game’s experience to your “flow” instead of overwhelming or boring you. I know that is made in some games a bit but it would be cool to see that implemented beyond just an elementary level.

I love hearing his analysis on robotics, and how he applies his realistic and genuine observations to them, while he’s still appreciating it as fictional entertainment. Always great to hear his input!

Should robots have emotions? Well if you view humans as just a very VERY complicated machine. One day, it will be inevitable.

There’s one thing I’ve noticed about myself when I got Vector. So far I’ve always addressed him as, well, him/he. Really I should be calling Vector an it but I always said him when talking about him to others.

I guess I immediately considered him part of my family without making the conscious decision.

  291. Nacho Bear

robots could make sounds and have quirky personalities if people wanted them too. that was kind of a close minded comment about the star wars droids

  292. Martha Nambo

    May 13, 2020 at 5:32 pm

God its so annoying they don’t let him just react and then talk about what he just saw instead of cutting off only what they don’t think is entertaining, like je couldn’t finish a sentence without it cutting him off every 7 words, its so hard to follow what he saus and what he reacts too

  300. Original Character

    May 13, 2020 at 7:52 pm

If robots were programmed to speak to humans and their creators neglected to give them their own language they would speak using sound. Doesn’t explain R2D2 though.

About the human ability to “bond” with robots, I actually think it’s quite a farce. Not because the robot can’t bond, but because the human can only “bond” with the robot while they can project an idolised personality on it. I think it’s so intoxicating becuase it’s the perfect imaginary freind.

at the rate human are evolving we will end up with a society where robots breed and educate human,

Robotics and tech in general is one of those fields that need the creativity or artist, the knowledge of scientist, and the wisdom of philosophers. Artists give us new ideas to create. Scientists figure out how to make it. And philosophers tell us if we should make it and what to do with it.

I went into mechanical engineering thinking I wanted to build robots. Instead, only one robotics course was offered (an introductory class in junior year) and when I went to a robotics lab at an actual workplace they told me that it’s a very limited field and that, although everyone wants to build robots, only some people get to do so. It’s been 10 years since I asked that question. Sad days.
