Could DAOs, or “decentralized autonomous organizations”, be the key to building the next great city? Experimental urbanist Scott Fitsimones shares how these mission-driven, blockchain-governed, collectively owned organizations could increase the speed and efficiency of building cities (among many other applications) — all while pooling decision-making power in a radically collaborative way. Hear about how he started a “crypto co-op” that bought 40 acres of land in Wyoming and learn more about the potential for DAOs to get things done in the future.

The main problem with all these the far-fetched attempts to find uses for blockchain is that they completely miss human psyche out of the equation. Systems function the way they do for a reason. Regulations are for a reason, mostly. I see this DAO bubbles as another try to pump crypto assets for rich people to gain their profits. You can’t manage anything with low-level democracy-like organization. People have to be qualified for a reasonable vote.

Building and governing a city through a DAO sounds like a horrible, dystopian and anti-democratic idea. It basically means that money rules everything – even more than it already does.

@TheWhiskeyDouble I have to disagree with you there. I’m neither against DAOs nor crypto in general. I was just talking about this specific use of a DAO.
Yes, some cryptos are scams, but others like Bitcoin and Ethereum certainly aren’t. And they do have interesting and useful properties. Of course there are pros and cons, but I see both of them (and others) as a net positive.

Interesting thought, but I don’t think this could overtake the cities we already have in America. It feels a bit like a techno dream for people to get excited about, and invest lots of money and time into, but has very little real world value. It’s taken hundreds of years for American cities to grow to the point they are now, and imho we need to go back in time to relearn the lessons that past generations learned, and get away from the ‘woke’ entitled soft attitude that most people have today. It takes serious hard work, sacrifice, grit, and dirt under your nails to build something as vast and complicated as a city. Just my 2cents anyway…

Good video!! Very attractive from start to finish. However, the wisest thing that should be on every smart individuals list is to invest in different streams of income that are not dependent on the government to generate money, especially now business and investing is the easiest way to make money regardless of what party makes it to the oval office.

First, we are not going to do what COMMUNIST CHINA does, over here, second,
Sounds like they require you to “own nothing and be happy”. I sense the “schwabmeister”🤭
Socialism isn’t going to work this way either, no matter how many times you try it, re-label it, it’ll never work.
Because of the good ol’ standard condition.
We’re all different maybe we won’t want to participate like that in a city if they were everywhere. Don’t fall for the progressive or leftist thought that you can engineer humanity to all think the same ain’t going to happen either.

This is such a scam. The main thing for a city is jobs, build a factory and you’ll have a town. You treat it as only housing problem. People need to earn a living. I also think parking is very important, Especially in congested cities your whole ideology is upsidedown.

Do I understand it correctly that thanks to DAOs now regular people can put money into some ground breaking projects and if they are in fact successful big fish can arrive at already made business opportunity and just buy enough of tokens to overrule the rest of participants? Can I withdraw my money from DAO if I don’t like the path that is taken by the majority of voters?

No worries, much more than 99% of these crypto project doesn’t succeed and than the hopeful investor who didn’t find a bigger fool to offload onto, can hold the empty bag. And if by chance this one does, likely founders have written the program so that they retain majority of power anyway.

What a shattered dream; this is sad to watch. To think we were all naive enough to believe this block chain stuff could free us, unite us and pave the way to a better future.

But we all know the truth now; surveillance has won, data theft is killing privacy; and the corporations and governments are growing too powerful. Goodbye human rights and liberties; hello digital serfdome.

“In a 2020 study, Wyoming was ranked as the 25th hardest state for citizens to vote in.” and a DAO wants to make it even harder by linking voting rights to capital which also gets abused a lot. This won’t end in a city but in a disaster.

  47. Peteruspl

    August 2, 2022 at 8:28 am

Crypto contributes nothing to this. You can do almost all of this via legal contracts, and the few things you can’t do we’ve learned from experience are usually end points for criminals. Yeah you speed some things up, that’s nice but if you loose your code or get it extorted there’s no recourse. Having a human authority allows some gaming of the system but so does any possible combination of the rules of the DAO. You could have almost exact same functionality with a normal database run by CityCompany (where people can buy shares, vote on issues, pay with shares for in-kind labor etc) instead of ledger run on crypto and used for CityDAO. The only real difference is there’s hype on crypto, with 99% of buyers are not in it for the alleged purposes but to eventually sell to a bigger fool for more dollars. For the purpose of wasting a bit of money to scam millions likely never even digging any foundations CityDAO is indispensable, while for the purpose of building a private city a company would do just as well or better.

I was intrigued, until the last minute… that would mean that influencers would fight not for popularity, but for power. While there’s a logic to it (the people we say we like represent us better than our “representatives” we elect) I don’t want my world to be ruled by a bunch of kardashians and logan pauls, to caricature a bit.
