During the Soviet Union era, therapy was often used as a tool of political oppression. Since then, Russia has seen major reforms in mental health care — but stigmas and distrust for the practice still live on. Psychologist and TED Fellow Olga Kitaina shares the current state of therapy in Russia (where tarot card readers and astrologers sometimes pass as psychoanalysts) and outlines her solution for getting people the professional help they need.

Some do not know what to do as we know what is called knowledge there is what we do not and cannot let one another know, no secret… it is though professionalism marketing and business strategies; giving run around a person doesn’t have to try doesn’t attempt as it were a problem is made and the solution has accidentally and mistakenly come to be this run around. We cannot get along not doing what is correct and not to worry what isn’t correct is that we have every right. It is scary and sad how strange it is to be alive & well, awake & not sick.

I don’t remember speeches about mental health of Al-Qaida or Talban members. Does mental health matter in terms of terrorists?

It is a country with over 140 million people, not a terrorist organisation. The army and the politicians is a different story

It’s good that mental illness is stigmatized in Russia and that people know not to make excuses. I wish America would go back to that same way of thinking. You therapists who make mentally ill people out of mere opinions and not facts should be sued for slander. Even those of you trying to help only treat symptoms and not the underlying causes of people wanting to hurt themselves and others.

Good points but could be a little more nuanced.

Psychology, as a science, has evolved far beyond what it was in the 1920’s. Psychotherapy, in practice, is hit-or-miss.

A good psychotherapist does effectively address underlying root causes using the best that science has to offer, which is the closest thing we have to fact. You might be surprised what the latest research can say about the human mind.

There are many therapists, though, that will just fill their patients with pills just to see if they behave appropriately. This is a problem even in American medical treatment, where they just want to move a patient’s marks to a baseline, and not address the root cause. Unfortunately, treating superficial symptoms is just the easiest way to do your job in these fields.

I also say this, because, what if somebody was born without faculties for empathy? Or, on the flip side, what if stigmatizing or dismissing somebody’s internal struggle becomes destructive for them, when they really COULD be treated?

I firmly believe that the culture around mental health is improving in America. It’s a shame that people will oversimplify mental health to the point of justifying any behavior from laziness to murder, but the bright side of the story is that we understand these behaviors so much more now than ever before, and people are finally coming to accept the idea that people can have different minds as well as a capacity for change.

Thank you for your video. I believe that it’s really important to maintain your mental health. I am from Ukraine. My mental health is not stable. I am afraid to sleep at night because russian missiles can fly to my home in the middle of the night. I talk about war a lot. I am afraid of it. It’s not okay when Ukrainians are dying while russians enjoy their lives. You are right that there are a lot of problems with psychotherapy from Soviet Union. History is repeating . russian government is lying about war to its own people. Putin didn’t tell russians that he is killing us. His soldiers are raping our women and bombing civilian objects. They bombed maternity hospitals where were a lot of pregnant women hiding in the shelter. They feel happy when they kill civilians and they are proud of it. I think they are mental ill. Moreover, when russians’ missiles flew to the city building in Kyiv a lot of people died including children. People lost their homes their relatives. The same situation was in Odesa. A Man went to the shop when he returned he saw that his house was bombed by russians missiles. His wife his 1-year-old daughter and mother where home. They all died because of russians. That man lost everything he had. When russians saw it they just laughed at us and said we deserved it. It’s not okay. They all are mental ill and cruel.

You must allow sleep to take you at night, and close your eyes for a short breathing meditation everyday to calm your mind. Just a little. Despite all the evil around you, there is beauty in life.

May the world help the Ukrainians find peace again 🙏🏻 🇺🇦

Step 1: stop committing genocide and whitewashing it as a defensive “military operation”.
Step 2: leaders should advocate for mental health issue awareness, destigmatization of this matcho man culture, and fund resources for checkups and help (including therapy and meds when needed).
Step 3: realize Russia is not democratic so the will of the people means very little but over time protests might add up to… something?
