Wanna add to the attack your own species thing, cause I assume he had to keep it short for the video. A lot of animals that live alone and don’t have some sort of sociality will kill each other over mates, food, shelter, etc. Not killing each other is more of a feature of social animals than a large number that don’t live in groups.

dr. hanson is simply and dangerously wrong in his assessment of selection pressure on sars-cov-2. the virus mostly transmits before symptoms begin or within the first couple days of clinical disease. deaths follow weeks to months later, at which point the virus has already transmitted. there is absolutely no selection pressure against virulence in a virus that behaves this way, and mutations that will produce increased transmissibility are just as likely to produce increased virulence through e.g. viral load, immune evasion.

About viruses, it all depends on where it thrives at and what need to feed on to live. That’s why different viruses attack only certain areas in the body. It attacks eats away at those cells which causes them to fail and make you sick while your body fights them off. In the end, they looking for their next meal just like any organism. You can say the same for humans. We kill the animal to eat but if we just remove 1 leg, it can still live.

Murder hornets are why I’m terrified that we are broadcasting our selves to aliens. There could be a species out there that followed the murder hornet’s gathering strategy and it’s probably not smart to put ourselves out there so openly.

if mutations are random then why would you expect them to trend toward something that benefits an organism? why isn’t it equally as likely that they cause the organism to completely die out due to overwhelming negative mutations?
Mutation != adaptation

The thing about preserving animals that are about to go extinct is that are these creatures even ‘meant’ to survive? Lots of them are endangered because they survive on very specific foods or that they are simple losers (take the ‘nose monkeys’ as a reference). The mammoths could survive somehow, but most of them probably went instinct because they couldn’t adapt.
99.99% of all species that ever existed are now extinct…

@Wired, Thor, do murder hornets ever target and use small vertebrates as food for their larvae? #AskingForAFriend (lol)
If so, could they be used as a solution to infestations of foreign invasive rats on isolated islands, or would using them thusly be as disastrous as using Japanese beetles for kudzu (U.S.), or cane toads for insect infestations (Australia)? I would hate to see them decimate local endemic Native colonial bees and ants, leaving the rats untouched.

About that COVID mutation question, there’s an additional point to it: mutations hardly stick because by definition they are really rare. Most of the times, a mutation is fixated (becomes relevantly frequent) for two main reasons: first, if it is significantly beneficial in the corresponding environmental context and two, by chance. But there’s a question you need to ask yourself when thinking about a virus becoming less deadly over time: “does it matter”? If the virus spreads sufficiently during the infection period (which seems to be the case for the SARS-Cov2), then there’s probably not enough environmental pressure for the fixation of mutations that make it less deadly. It would be more likely that mutations that make it spread better or faster would be fixated. Yes, in a long run, we do expect parasites to become less deadly to the host, but this depends a lot on the mutational pressures present in the environment. At the moment, the mortality rate doesn’t seem to be a major pressure for the SARS-Cov2. Much more prominent would be better ways to spread, maybe a longer infection or a longer asymptomatic period (because of social distancing, masks and hygiene), and resistance against vaccines.

If I could ask, but don’t bees and other social insects that seem like the murder hornets can some make some sort of a giant group that overheats and kills even bigger insects that could be a treat to the colony? And asked that, if being true, what other kind of social insects would be targeted to consume their reserves of food? Like ants?

Another big problem about extinct species, that we currently face, is a lack of extant ancestors to this extinct species, that is, a lack of similar animals that still exist. Wooly Mammoths are usually the face of reverse-extinction efforts because one, they are often so well-preserved that there’s a very complete specimen, but TWO, because they are so related to elephants. So it may be possible, say, to take a test-tube mammoth embryo and put it in an elephant uterus, and then the elephant would birth the mammoth. Something like this, however, is not currently possible for say, a T-rex, because we have nothing like a 50-foot giant flesh-eating lizard that would be able to carry it. It’s only a matter of time though, I think, until we can grow extinct animals in an artificial uterus. That will be an amazing day for biology indeed.

In north Carolina, there’s a tiny colony of reintroduced red wolves, numbering less than 30 individuals, but this year they had pups! The problem is really people. Wolves have a bad rap and people get mad about them being around. Nevermind that the wolves aren’t very dangerous to people. They aren’t even as dangerous to *livestock* as people think they are.

The only murder a Giant Asian Hornet commits is to colonies of other bees. Unfortunately, when most people hear Murder Hornet, they automatically think of humans as the target.
