Wha?!.. Had to skip back to 4:21 for the Wide Area Tap description
… what’s cool is if you want is instead of tapping on a bud you can tap on your face just in front of your ear, Sony calls the feature Wide Area Tap…

Hope it works great. Ok, well enough.
Not the biggest fan of tapping buds, some taps don’t register on some buds so new solutions are a good avenue to pursue.

2 years this will be an industry feature on all mid range buds, soon as next release for premium buds.

      February 15, 2022 at 11:24 pm

It works quite well. Was surprising. But requires at least a double tap to work. Ideally it would be single tap for pause, not double.

    Good review man.

That charging case is – or looks? – real small – not bad but wonder if it and it’s closing clasp will be robust enough for long term usage.

Only minor downside I hear is no wireless charging. I’m guessing aftermarket modifiers might do something about that or that will come out on version 2 of these.
Anyway looks Sony might have a hit with these especially for people who don’t like the “plugged in” feeling on some earbuds. Will look out for them sometime.

    • David Carnoy

      February 15, 2022 at 9:18 pm

The case is indeed small and the hinge seems sturdy enough and should hold up ok. I did drop the case once on concrete by accident from about 3 feet high and it survived ok (buds spilled out).

Yes! I miss this Sony. Sony who plays – making yellow submarine cases for their hi8 cameras. Making funny Walkmans. But also making niche products. And high end products like metal cd walk-mans, dc6 cassette, trinitron tvs and world radios. Ahh i love Sony buy mostly their older products. These though looks like loads of fun, and a true invention worthy of the old saying “its a Sony”

Such a bad review , first ppl need to understand open design of these earbuds such as Samsung galaxy buds live , or Aftershokz and these Sony link buds , so you can connect with outside world easier , so you will stay safer and more aware of your surroundings, these buds are NOT TO BE COMPARED with apple 3’s or beats studio which are more inner design so you can have better sound quality. This guy who reviews these is comparing apples and oranges and has no idea what the design of these buds are used for 😒😒😒😒

    • David Carnoy

      February 15, 2022 at 11:27 pm

AirPods 3 are open earbuds. So are Galaxy Buds Live. I make clear what I’m comparing them to and that they are open earbuds good for safety issues. But there are downsides to open buds.

Think Sony failed with not making it wireless charging case. With everything going wireless charging. They go backwards with this. This is what made me love the buds live where they sit over your canal and no tip. Now Sony came out with their version and can’t wait to try them. Already preordered them. Would love to see a closed back version and wonder how sound is affected if you put a piece of tape over the hole? Something for me to try when I get them.

    • somesh salunke

      February 16, 2022 at 1:27 am

its the first iteration, where they need to test the water with their fans using this. If the approval rating is high, the second iterations will probably have a few improvements including wireless charging.

These are great in terms of safety, but what about the time when you just want to zone out, block out the rest of the world, and just listen to your favourite song or podcast? I can imagine these causing you to rewind your podcasts since the speaker was muffled by traffic or loud noises outside. And what if you have to play the volume game when you are in a noisy environment? Wont that lead to hearing damage? This tech is novel and the design is pretty cool, but I do still have all these lingering questions.

    February 16, 2022 at 5:51 pm

QUESTION : Hi, I have enjoyed your video but one crucial point hasn’t been addressed (at least for me). I would like to know if these earbuds, like all others I have ever tried, tend to create a seal in your ears and make you hear the stomping of your foot steps when walking around without music or if this new design allows for air circulation in your ear canal thus preventing this kind of “bone conduction” I think it is called? Thank you very much for your time and your video! Love it. Dom.

    • David Carnoy

      February 16, 2022 at 7:21 pm

No, you won’t hear the stomping of your footsteps though you will hear traffic noise.

This is the most innovative Sony product I’ve seen in awhile. I remember when the Xperia z1 came out and put all other phones to shame. I remember my friends freaking out seeing me wash my phone off because waterproof phones weren’t really on the market at the time. The camera also blew other phones out of the water. Great video 👌 I usually wait until the verdict is out on a product, make sure all the kinks are worked out before I pull the plug. I’m getting the buds live to try now. These look pretty cool for ear buds. Leave it to Sony to come out with something something fresh. I hope these do really well but they won’t be for everyone just like buds live wasn’t. I’ll be curious to what other YouTubers will say will they trash it or love it. Us nerd’s love the content on the products that excite us. This is fresh new look that’s going to garnish some attention.

    February 17, 2022 at 3:25 pm

I’m glad to hear that they’ve given these earbuds a sane name. 🙂

You didn’t mention it, but I saw another unboxing that had a whole experience with scanning a QR code and being treated to an AR 3D experience. Did the box come with that?

Overall, I’m not terribly impressed with these, from the looks of them. Open air earbuds, while they’re good in some environments, kind of negate the point of wearing earbuds in the first place, IMO. The audio quality (except for phone calls) doesn’t sound impressive, there’s no wireless charging, and I get better battery life out of my XM3s.

I think if you’re going to charge almost $200 for earbuds, you have to bring a lot more to the table.

    • David Carnoy

      February 17, 2022 at 4:23 pm

I did get one of those. It’s just for the media (Sony’s marketing team sent them out). Not relevant for the average consumer. I threw it out afterwards. The box was a pain to deal with and heavy. The whole thing was weird considering Sony was talking up how the buds are made out of recycled plastic — then sent this box that would be hard to recycle.

Why do you care so much about wireless charging it ain’t that hard to plug in a cord

    • Justin

      February 18, 2022 at 1:05 pm

@etur0 oh gee really? I didn’t notice. Maybe because it’s 2022 and wireless charging has been around for a few years now and if the product is going to cost that high, it might as well have it like plenty of other wireless earbud cases. It’s just nice extra feature to have. Jeez, it’s not like I said, “they should’ve just made it wireless charging only! I hate wired charging!” When it comes to either my phone and my Pixel buds, I switch off from wireless charging to using cord on a near equal amount.

I see that the tester used an iPhone . Apple Bluetooth only support sbc/aac. The lowest tech for Bluetooth.
If he always uses iPhone , his ear may be dumbed down to not hear the original sound as the artist intended.
Everyone know Apple products loves bass .

iPhone users don’t buy these as the iPhone can’t match to the tech in the Sony .
Androids users, switch to developer option and adjust the codec and bits.
    It will be amazing …

“Linkbuds” finally Very catchy name from Sony

  80. severn sea

    February 18, 2022 at 4:32 pm

Watched the review and ordered. At £149, as usual we pay a premium in the UK, but I have a pair of Cambridge Audio Melomania Touch earbuds which sound fantastic, and are currently on offer at half the price of the LinkBuds, but like everything else I’ve tried they don’t stay in place all the time, though they’re better than most.

But even with a transparency mode I’ve never found anything that allows me to hear what’s going on around me while I’m listening to music – crucial if you have your kids with you. If these can do that AND stay in place, Sony should have a winner on their hands.

  85. Wiz33

Got mine from Amazon today. This is a pretty good compromise between in-ear buds and pods, they’re more secure than pods (unless you have aftermarket wings) so less likely to fall off and they’re more comfortable to wear than in-ear for casual listening or when you needs to be aware of your surrounding as the open design sounds natural compare to most environmental sound pass-through (which sometimes hiss or other sound artifacts). Sound quality is pretty decent for casual listening and watching streaming media (quality in-ear buds will definitely sounds better for HD music). Noise cancelling only works with mic so not recommended for noisy area.

My AirPods 3 are by far the best wireless ear buds I own. I also have AirPods Pros and original AirPods and the 3rd Generation is better than even the pros IMO. The pros always would pop out while exercising but the AirPods 3s Never have! I tried the Beats Buds and returned them after ten minutes in Best Buys parking lot. They were way to tinny. I may try these but still can’t beat the Apple convenience on how they switch to all the apple devices automatically even my Apple TV .

Finally, waiting for things like those for years. I hate to have a mic to simulate sound-through, I don’t care about noise canceling at all.

Some people are saying that this headphones don’t have active noise cancelling. Likw BRUHHH 😑😑

You can’t have active noise cancelling because they’ve got a hole in them. Duh!

The design seems a solution from ear wax stuck on the mesh

Nice review. Great design and looks very promising.

Sidenote: the amount of ads in this vid killed it.

I thought the bud would slide over to lock the hole shut when needed.

I hope third party ear loops come out soon. I really like these but my ears don’t. The loops have to be more sturdier I guess.

I bought it yesterday, so the previous enthusiasm left me low when I listened, I didn’t expect that! Silicone of size “S” has become suitable. Unfortunately, without the lack of bass frequencies (BASS), the sounds are tiring. I feel cheated! According to the specification, 20-20,000hz, but 150hz is not realized, unfortunately. I use it for phone calls and other … 🙁 WF-1000XM4 stays on music 🙂

How long do you charge them out of the box for the first time? I’ve been recommended in the past to charge things for 24hrs for the first time to get max quality for the lifetime of the device.

I have Samsung Buds Live. When I first got them they made my ears swore, and I couldn’t wear them for very long. After a year and a half, I wear them all the time and I even forget they’re there haha! And they feel very comfortable. Regardless of buds, your ears have to get used to them to feel comfortable. Love them with all my heart ❤️

The main reason I stick w/ Airpod (Pro) is the easy device switching; iPhone/iPad/Mac, can switch directly w/o disconnecting from the 1st device first. Often don’t even need to manually do anything as i-devices know if you got the airpods active.

All reviews should mention how easy device switching compares. I suspect not as easy as Airpod.

Cute, but these are not for me. I like the sound isolation that regular earbuds give me, even when walking around outside. Better to use your eyes to stay aware of what’s going on around you, and even regular earbuds still let in a lot of sound unless you REALLY have the volume up. I don’t know if this off-ear tapping would be a lot better than tapping the bud. I’d love a gesture-based control set up, where you swipe this way or that to control the sound or playback instead of thwacking the bud. Isn’t there another non-Airbud design that does this? Sounds like I’ve heard of that before, and not from me! 😁
