This is game changing for lite gamers that want to test the PC gaming waters. For $400 you can get a machine more powerful than ps4 hardware, and its portable. For a little more, you can get a large micro SD card and get gaming.
Best of all, unlike EVERY other portable today, it does not throttle power when in handheld. Laptops and even the switch run slower if not plugged into power/docked. This does not. Good graphics all the time.

The people who liked Steam controllers and Steam Links still have them and use them, so the fact that they might have been a financial flop for Valve doesn’t hurt users. The same will be true of the Steam Deck. Years after Valve stops supporting it, gamers will still be hacking them, running emulators and doing whatever they want with them. That’s the benefit of an open system.

I have Switch Lite, it’s good but not great. It only gets a pass only because of how cheap it is, Steam Deck is something I’ve been waiting for since I was a child. A PC handheld Device. It’s the switch lite but 1000x better, In everyway right out the box. And with this BS shortages I’m not risking losing out on this. Also it will show steam to make a deck 2 in the future. Support this. It’s worth the hype, imo.

I will definitely keep it with the default SteamOS / Linux. Valve is heavily optimizing it specifically for this device. I don’t see myself needing Windows for my use case either. Am already happily using Manjaro And Linuxmint on a Daily basis. Proton and the custom work they’re investing is going to be a game changer for sure. Highly optimistic.

I miss the PSP and DS days where i played some of my fave games on the go. I dont have to be at my desk to play something with a Deck.
This suits my use case, 6-8 hours of playing PC games and emulators while in bed watching TV

the steam controller is great! Yes a lot of people didn’t get it. It isn’t for everyone, but with the right setup it is miles above in fps and RTS(than a regular thumbstick setup), and even 3rd person. It isn’t plug and play, but once you get it you’ll love it

I’m a PC gamer that bought a Switch as a mobile, indie machine. The Steam Deck is going to be a dream come true for me.
4X games and RPGs everyday, everywhere! Just keeping a PS4 for fighting games.

As far as Steam Hardware is concerned, the Steam Machines are the only ones I would call a “Flop.” Steam Link is great, free on many Smart TVs and works like a Charm, you dont need the Box. Steam Controller was interesting from a design standpoint, and did its Job, but it had much room for improvements.

The Problem with Valve is not that they dont make top notch hardware, the problem is that they dont follow up on the stuff they make because they just .. lose interest? They have so much freedom to work on whatever they want, keeping old tech up to date is probably beneath the creative geniuses at valve. thats why the mobile app is such a broken mess.

I really hope they keep working and improving the Deck at least.

    • mcswaggerr

      February 3, 2022 at 12:49 am

      > the problem is that they dont follow up on the stuff they make because they just .. lose interest?

IMO it’s more they’re terrible with marketing, and this time they’re actually doing some real marketing of the product. Otherwise I’d say they’ve followed up on the Steam Link, Steam Controller (a la the Steam Deck), and rolled both into the Deck with refined Steam Input, to a great degree. Like you said, the Steam Machine was the only flop, and even out of that we’re getting SteamOS 3.0. If anything, they’ve kept momentum but change directions when a project didn’t quite work.

Steam Input is still getting brand new features (like yaw+roll tracking combined for gyro) as of this week.

Great video and presenter. I am interested, but not that interested. I preordered for $5 last summer and was put on the “After Q2” waitlist; somethings haven’t changed. I suspect anyone ordering now would get theirs next year. I don’t mind waiting since I am want the reviews before buying. I can always cancel and refund. I usually buy version 2 hardware anyway, after the all bugs and design flaws are changed.

  54. heather perkins

    February 5, 2022 at 3:08 pm

I’m late to the party on this, but I pre-ordered one as soon as I’d done a little research. I’m really excited for the potential here. I currently play on Xbox One and in VR, but was looking at a NexGen XBox or PS console or maybe even a gaming PC. But because of scalpers I can’t get a new XBox anytime soon unless I want to pay above list price. What decided me on steam deck is the flexibility of being able to play any game in the steam library, and play anywhere I want, including hooked up to my TV. I know buying anything on launch is a risk, but I feel like it will be worth it.

Steam controller is actually very well made and functionally works great. I would argue it’s probably one of my favorite controllers. The community mapping within Steam is amazing. It’s the best way to play mouse and keyboard native games on the big screen. I use mine almost everyday.

What I really wonder is how does the touchscreen work for games? Does a game need to be coded by the dev to make use of it? (I assume so) or can it simulate mouse cursor too?
Thinking of They Are Billions, RTS or even a visual novel (does tapping the screen advance the game or does it do nothing).

i don’t think any of valve’s hardware adventures have been a failure
steam machines were a means for valve to push their OS, not to sell hardware since they weren’t the ones actually selling the hardware
they turned steam link into an app that you can download on pretty much any smart TV
steam controller was great but people weren’t convinced, and it might have been a beta device for the steam deck.
I am sure valve has been working on the steam deck for the past decade but we’ll never know…steamOS/steam machines being the first step.
valve is known to work years on projects before ever revealing them..make your own conclusion.
