Bug is a very general term in entomology, unless referring to the true bugs, Hemiptera (cicadas, plant hoppers, tree hoppers, shield bugs, aphids and bed bugs), they have characteristic piercing or sucking mouthparts. He is a brilliant science communicator and I am glad he discussed this.

The thing that really stuck out for me though is his acknowledgment that scientific institutions have caused harm to certain marginalized groups and that’s led to distrust and fear. I really feel like it’s important for professionals in medical and scientific fields to acknowledge this so that it’s easier for folks to trust their expertise.

I wonder if the question about kissing bugs is referring to labs that study Chagas disease. Texas A&M has a whole kissing bug colony to study and have learned so much about Chagas in the US because of people sending in the bugs they find!

HEY EVERYONE for more about kissing bugs (and specifically Chagas disease, a parasitic illness they cause) check out This Podcast Will Kill You! They did a great episode on it recently. They’re really fun and they have quite a few other episodes about vector-borne disease, for all the bug enthusiasts out there! I binged all their episodes this year and they’re awesome 😀
