This “business model” and presentation is flawed and questionable in so many ways:
    – You don’t need a well trained mechanic to change tires. I expect this to be close to minimum wage. Replacing an at-will minimum-wage employee with a USD 250k robot seems questionable. But it gets even better.
    – The robot costs USD 250k. According to the interview it takes nine months to recover the costs at 100 tires per day at USD 5 per tire. Even if you assume a 7 day workweek and 31 day-months, this only comes to ca. USD 140k…
    – It takes up to 20 minutes for the robot to change the tire. A person needs 60 minutes. How can you increase revenue by 4x (if there is even the demand for 4x – this is a big question), when the time is only 1/3? Nobody will pay extra to have a robot change the tires.
    – The robot still requires a person to do certain tasks, i.e. the shop will have to pay a the salary AND the fee for the robot.
    – The robot, supposedly, solves the problem of finding mechanics. Since a mechanic is still required, how does the robot solve the problem?
    – One benefit of the robot is to have a shop run 24/7, according to the interview. According to the video it is difficult to find people to change tires. Since the robot still requires one person, is’t it going to be even more difficult to find a person doing tire changes at 3am? Is there demand to have tires changed at 3am?
    – How many shops have the demand for 100 tires to be changed, EVERY SINGLE DAY? Of course, there are busy times during the year, but not year-round.

This ain’t going to be a success. Sorry.

      June 26, 2020 at 3:20 pm

Sure you still need to hire a person to complement the robot, but at 1/3 the cycle time. Your now hiring 1 person instesd of three. On top of that, this one person will have down time to do other things as well. Sure 250k is a lot to recover from, but what if there are financing options? You could potentially make this purchase and have an immediate positive impact on net cash flow, if your into that sort of thing.

    • Sam G

      June 26, 2020 at 7:41 pm

@Jacob Fowler The person will not have time to do anything else: within the 20 minutes this person has to drive the car on the lift, take care of the weights on two tires, drive the car of the lift, drive the car back on the lift the other way around (note, there is only one robot on one side), take care of the weights of the other two tires and drive the car back down. This leaves minimal time between each step.

They mention an increase of revenue, i.e. they don’t talk about replacing three mechanics with one mechanic as this would mean that the revenue stays the same.

Re financing: the calculation the guy makes in the video doesn’t work out. At a price of USD 250k per robot this robot needs to change 50k tires before he starts making a profit and this doesn’t even take R/D, financing costs, maintenance et al. into account. Only the biggest of the biggest shops will change 50’000 tires ever at all.

It is overall an extremely bad thought-out presentation.

Yeah, but the robot doesn’t ever call off, take breaks, come in late, smoke meth, forget to care, or forget to torque the lugnuts properly causing someone to loose a wheel at highway speeds and have an accident. Avoided liability is a big savings for businesses.

The robots definitely are already here for our jobs. It’s up to us to figure out how to avert the trend of automation resulting in fewer livable wage jobs and making everyone work themselves to death in an Amazon warehouse.

5 dollars per tire x 100 tires per day x 30 days per month x 9 months does not equal 250,000 dollars. It is only 135,000 dollars. I’m just doing the math. Thread stripping, custom wheels low profile tires, tire balancing, installing and removing tire valves, ……there 80% more involved to removing and installing tires than a robot can currently do. A six figure machine that just takes a tire off is a huge waste of money. And I know that thing is not gonna put the tire back on with out marring up the wheels if their chrome. And even if you argue that it helps the technician not hurt his back. The technician will still need to place the tire on a balancer, bend over and install tire valves lift the tire onto a tire buster….i can go on an on. But ya, sure spend all that cash on a glorified tire remover. But if that’s all it can do….better hope you have clients walking through the door every 20 minutes. There days when I only had 5 clients come in. And half of them just wanted a tire repair.

Late last week, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission chair Gary Gensler said that he was “proud to serve” the agency, which some are taking as a hint at an upcoming resignation. Gensler has faced heavy criticism for his crackdown on crypto, including a recent lawsuit from 18 states, and is likely to be replaced under President-Elect Donald Trump who has vowed to oust Gensler. On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump is meeting with Brian Armstrong, the CEO of crypto exchange Coinbase, to discuss potential personnel appointments.

This episode of Equity brings you an interview between Rebecca Bellan and co-founder and CSO of blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, Jonathan Levin. The pair caught up at our Strictly VC event in New York shortly before the Gary Gensler news dropped to discuss the imminent change for crypto in the wake of the US election and Chainalysis’s choice to run its operations in the US.

Equity is a show about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines. New episodes drop every Wednesday and Friday. Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
