Wow, his answers are so eloquently put! This inspires me to pull out my cello again and start playing; it’s been on the back burner because of being busy with school. I love his thoughts of putting your emotion in your playing, that’s exactly why I love playing piano pieces that match my mood at the moment. It feels like I can put more emotion in them!

  37. 민지주Minji’s Day

    April 28, 2021 at 10:48 pm

my most favorite memory of my childhood years was a hot summer day and I was eating ice cream on the porch while the neighbor next door was streaming classical music. I remember hearing this GORGEOUS cello part in one of the songs and I was mesmerized. I never got to know of the piece’s name until very recently when coincidentally I heard it again in a coffee shop. It’s titled Butterfly’s day out and it features yo-yo ma and a bunch of other brilliant artists, and I’ve never had a song that brought me so much nostalgia or pure electrifying emotions like it. It’s one of my most treasured musical memories.

Many many years ago, a friend of mine had organised a YoYo Ma concert in Bangkok. I arrived early to pick up my free ticket! (as you do) and my friend told me to very discretely and quietly go into that room over there….

I crept in and there was YoYo warming up. In a tiny room. Him and me! So I just sat down in the corner and enjoyed this unique musical experience for quite a while. Didn’t even get to say hello, as far as I remember. Perhaps just exchanging a voiceless, but mutually understood Thai wai!

The actual concert was also magical!

The suite 6 is definitely very special. To me represents the inexistence of death.
On the Suite 1: Well, we also have to appreciate it, i had also thought of it as being flowing, and made the mistake a couple times of thinking it’s overplayed… Also great music. Right arm technique: Also very important what the master says… Know your body, lesion is so harming to musicians…

  143. Kathryn A

    May 2, 2021 at 10:47 pm

Man, I know this man is a legend–I was blessed to get to hear him perform with the CSO back in the day. But when he went to tune his cello with the pegs near the top of the instrument–I instantly flinched, because of it getting drilled into my brain as a kid “DON’T touch those! You can snap a string that way!!”

I know that’s not gonna happen in a professionally-edited video of a professional cellist. It’s just a reflex I haven’t lost even after 15+ years.

“Why do cellists move their heads around?” I dunno, why do lead guitarists roll around on stage? Getting into it I suppose, only reason I don’t move my head much playing violin is because I am supporting the violin under my chin, playing any other instruments I find myself moving my head, and I will tap my foot or sway or make faces while playing too. It just happens when you are really into it

10:34 I feel that once you submit to something a hobby or an instrument etc and just accept that it will take your entire life to be good at it, then you will start learning a lot faster. You sort of fall in love with failing so you can get better it’s like an addiction

Sure is a Cello expert, but not a movie expert. He did an impeccable job describing the song’s intended meaning, but not its use in movies.
In movies, the song is typically used among the general audience, particularly in comedy movies, where you are at a formal party. Typically, this conveys an atmosphere of extreme snobbery—usually RIDICULOUS levels of snobbery that often deserve a bit at least an eye-roll. The song is rarely used to describe an idyllic scene but portrays excessive decadent wealth and self-importance. Don’t forget to bend your pinky finger!

Why do cellists move their head? When you think about it, for almost all other instruments, the performer’s head is directly engaged with the instrument. The cello is almost the only one where the performer’s head is free to move.

Inaccurate for the head bobbing question to single out cellists. I can think of people bobbing their heads with the music for every instrument that isn’t a wind and therefore needs the head steady to keep the instrument steady. It’s not a cello thing, it’s a musician thing.

This may be a story he’s told in multiple interviews, but I’m fond of how one time his wife asked him what he thought about the cello soloist in the piece playing on the radio and he went on analyzing the performance and “this player has a very interesting style, they’re making some unusual but dynamic choices, I’d like to meet them.” And of course the cellist in the recording was this little-known performer named Yo Yo Ma.

The reasoning for why they’re so expensive sadly doesn’t hold up. Personally, I think that high quality products often come with high price-tags, so I’m not too fussed, but the comparison to guitars highlights a contradiction.

Archtop guitars are built just as he described the cello is, and, while they’re more expensive than many other guitars, they’re still no where NEAR the cost of a cello.

However, as a string player myself, you must know what {in German} an “Ohrworm” is-?

That and Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik,” among many others, drives mε (and presumably others) ςrαzγ-!!!

I understand what you’re getting at with your explanation, however I [“still”] find it irritating that “too” many musicians always describe music by visual aids such as waterfalls, Autumn leaves, gentle snow falling, running streams, et ceteræ.

I am surely a JS Bach fanatic, however {for mε} the sheer counterpoint, suspensions, dissonances and the “echo of the previously played ηοtε gently careening into the next note or set of notes,” brings ωοηδεrmεηt and a crinkle in my brain. 🥰

However, I really ‘δο’ wish that movies, et ceteræ, ωουlδ move oη, there are literally thousands of pieces, variations and transcriptions yet to be discovered in Bach’s treasure chest of Magical Cognitive Music.

As much as this video shows he’s a wonderful person, my experience when he came to visit our university was extremely different. We had to change his hotel 4 times until 4:00am because he found problems with each of them. The first was a suite in a historic 1800s building with incredibly expensive prices, and he said “I see a children’s park outside” and wanted to move because he didn’t want to see or hear children at any point.

I think fame definitely shapes someone. These were great responses to these questions, but just… don’t expect this kind of thing if you ever want to meet your heroes. You’ll inevitably be disappointed. Wonderful musician, though! Can’t stop listening.

  566. Bueno Loco

    May 23, 2021 at 3:01 pm

I encourage musicians to move with the sound. And there is a reason while playing cello: moving your head occasionally gives you that ”Uumph!” to the sound, while moving your head, you relax your upper trapezius muscle, and loosen your neck mucsles. While consentrating to your pecks, shoulder and arm muscles. Playing with a stiff neck sometimes affects greatly to ones performance

I actually liked the emotion/sound at 4:08. Not to say it was better than expressive play, but 4:08 felt like the kind of formal playing I expect when someone is playing a famous piece in a stadium and it’s about the piece rather than the cellist.

They play Suite No. 1 because it’s the only piece of classical music Hollywood knows for a solo instrument. It’s cliche. That’s why. Regardless of how wonderful the piece is, it’s become just overused cliche. Just like the Messiah Halleluja or the beginning of the chorus section of Beethoven’s 9th. There’s literally no artistic idea behind the choice, it’s just because the movie people think audiences know the piece and thus it will attract more viewers.

When I wanted to learn an instrument, I wanted to play cello, I don’t remember why but it’s what I really wanted to learn. Probably the sound.
So there was this little audition(so you’re accepted to the music school), checking the kids and the teacher who taught cello came to me and said “You have too short fingers, you won’t play cello.” I was 8 and totally devastated. I was given the option to pick either clarinet or flute, I went with clarinet and I never truly enjoyed playing it as it was never my choice really but played it till I was 17.

I still love cello but it just makes me sad because I didn’t get to learn it.

Interesting about finding the right spot on the string. I’d actually never thought of that before. So it’s kind of like playing a harmonic on a guitar, only all the time? Do you position the bow on a node, an anti-node, or somewhere in between (maybe 1/4 of the way between nodes as would be optimal for a linear driven harmonic oscillator?)

The questions asked in the series are often too… shallow? I feel kinda bad for the guests expecting questions that requires them or their level of skills to answer, but instead they have to provide a answer to something that has been answered by many others before. You don’t bend the table and the back to make that curve. They are actually carved. The ribs are the only parts that are bent into shape with an iron. Very common misconception.

He is right about good cellos being expensive because of the amount of time and skill it takes to make them. The materials themselves are actually also very expensive! Good quality spruce and maple that is big enough to make a cello gets very pricy.
