Why US Politics Is Broken — and How To Fix It | Andrew Yang | TED
The electoral system in the United States needs a redesign, says political reformer Andrew Yang. Exposing the flaws of a system built on poor incentives, he proposes a cost-effective overhaul inspired by primary elections already working in places like Alaska and advocates for ranked-choice voting, where voters can choose candidates in order of preference regardless…

Because he doesn’t address or influence the question that preoccupies American political news media this year—Trump or Biden?—Andrew Yang has fallen off the radar of average Americans. However, his interest in the nuts & bolts of the political process will make a bigger difference.

@tobetheanswer
May 7, 2024 at 9:16 pm
Ranked Choice Voting is True Democracy. The majority is not ignorant. ‘We the People’ are wonderfully enlightened. Our forefathers would have wanted elections to be this way, but didn’t have the technology. They despised power in the political parties.
@trevinbeattie4888
May 7, 2024 at 9:17 pm
The Alaska 2022 senate election actually demonstrates a flaw in Ranked Choice Voting. Alaska is a conservative-leaning state, so intuitively they should have elected a Republican — as illustrated by just over 50% of the votes going to Republican candidates. But the _moderate_ was eliminated in the first round (by just a small margin), even though he was likely the second choice for all other voters. So Begich acted as a spoiler just as a 3rd-party candidate would under plurality.
STAR voting was designed to fix this issue, as well as other issues with RCV like precinct-level tallying. And there’s a petition out to get this implemented in Oregon on the November ballot.
@tobetheanswer
May 7, 2024 at 9:25 pm
You’re missing the point of RCV. Just because it’s a Conservative state doesn’t intuitively mean ALL Republican candidates satisfy the People’s desires. Labels are just that… labels. Candidates need to EARN the votes of the electorate, not simply tow the Party lines. Your “moderate” needed a better campaign. More people liked Begich, plain and simple. It will take time for RCV to tear down party allegiance, but our Forefather’s would have wanted RCV. It’s true democracy at work.

Why? If the electorate is happy with their leadership, then let them continue. I believe RCV is a better solution.
@alzaresh
May 7, 2024 at 9:26 pm
I know Yang advocates for open primaries and ranked choice voting. That’s a great start. This duopoly is still a problem. The money that funds it is a problem (Yang’s democracy dollar). In this duopoly, we’re literally watching policies that would help Americans be used as campaign fodder because one side has largely gamed policy and precedent to their advantage for years. We need better representation, and it doesn’t happen in a two party system. It’s we the people.

@Stratelier
May 9, 2024 at 2:59 pm
To anyone who thinks RCV overcomplicates the voting process itself, I would recommend “approval voting” as an intermediate step — it can even re-use current (single-vote) ballot designs! And if they complain that it should be “wrong” to “vote twice”, ask WHY because each candidate still receives only *one vote per person* who approves them.

I think you should incentivize people to vote by offering them free donuts and starbucks gift cards. People will wait for hours to try a new chick fila sandwich, but can’t be bothered to vote on election day.
When you realize the average voter is just a fat, stupid, consumerist bag of illogical emotions, you can really play to that avatar and drive voter turnout. You have to turn the electoral process into some kind of reality tv game show. Because that’s what American’s truly care about.

@user-wk4ee4bf8g
May 9, 2024 at 3:15 pm
Sounds better, but still a fantasy. No one else can truly represent you in the world. And they certainly can’t simultaneously represent many people at once, they only represent themselves and the imagined idea of unity of ideas within a large population of people. The reality is a massive diversity of ideas, and representation being totally impossible.
Most of us have absolutely no idea how to make decision on the global scale, it’s completely ridiculous for us to be taking any part of that process. Only highly trained experts should be operating on that level, normal people shouldn’t be anywhere near it. Voting does nothing to minimize corruption, if anything it incentivizes what should be a professional process into becoming a popularity contest.
So, while and improvement, this new standard keeps thing as a silly popularity contest involving people who have no place making these kinds of decisions. In every other expertise we have testing standards and other ways for people to prove their worth, but for the most important decisions we have settled on an absurd popularity contest. It is doomed to eventually fail every time. I’m with Michael Malice on the idea of government, the idea that we need it is not true, but we are heavily programmed to think it necessary despite it causing endless problems every time.

All political systems require renewal.
After abruptly changing the way local governors were selected and elected, the roman empire went from roman pennisula to ruling the known world in less than 100 years.
Check it out. what was that change? forced rotation. No one governor staying in one province long enough to amass enough power to attack rome itself.
Does this sound like that? yes. it does.
Will it work. I’ll say it’s equally valueable to change up the rules from time to time as it is to get the rules perfect ever or even one time.
Change stays a fell hand. 😊

America will probably have it’s first Woman President in March or April of 2027 give or take a month. I do expect Biden and Kamila to survive the reelection, but I don’t expect Biden to survive the full four years of his next term of office.
I expect Joe to go in late Winter or early Spring of 2027. Sorry Joe. But we all got to go.
Makellia will be ok. She’s pretty smart. But then she will be the incumbent.
Baring some serious problem, the Chances will be good she will get reelected as President in 2029 since I do believe Trump will be either dead or so criminally insane as he will need round the clock care or even better he will choose mental health or long term care institutionalization over a Penitentiary.

Congress, the Supreme Court, and the senate are all far too small. Gerrymandering is a serious problem only because the size of representation has not grown with the population.
All three should easily be double the size they are presently, the electoral college is also very outdated and needs serious reform or abolishment.
We should be using a tiered voting system so that two parties can’t just ignore everyone in the middle (which is most of us).

I wrote Andrew Yang in for President last election, and this election I’m firmly in the RFK camp.

This is completely crazy. I’m so happy I live in Northern Europe, in a country where democracy truly works.
This guy seems reasonable. How come he doesn’t even get a chance to run on equal terms?

In my country – Denmark, EU – we get a certificate by mail, we take our certificate to the polling station, trade it for a ballot, go into this little booth, place our cross and put our ballot in the bucket. And the people, that gets the most votes, go to parliament and become politicians and make the legislation. That’s it. So the american system is SO hard to understand: “Congress”, “Senate”, “Electors” “Swing States” “Party Primary” etc etc. Why can’t you just have one-man-one-vote also?

we should also do like elizabeth warren suggested and put a lifetime cap on how much somebody can make after working a government position. If you want to earn money stay in the private sector. If you want to help people you’re going to have to make sacrifices.

US politics is broken because of billionaires and their sycophants, like Andrew Yang. Get big money out of politics, and KEEP it out. Repeal Citizens United.

I almost cried because this is the first genuine ray of hope for politics I have felt in many years. The future actually might be ok.. ‘if’ these reforms get up.. but that’s a very big ‘if’

Didn’t address the system of legal bribery that has turned this country into an oligarchy, but yeah sure.

That’s one part of it, the filibuster and big corporate lobbying/bribery is a whole other problem

Alaska is a good example of the impacts because of the visibility of Sarah Palin but it seems weird to call it the Alaska system as Maine was the first state to vote it in and the first to use it for federal elections

Go Andrew. The U.S. 2024 Election is NOT LOGICAL. It is purely EMOTIONAL mixed with INTENTIONAL MIS/DISINFORMATION to spread a FLASE NARRATIVE. IF I end up an AMERICAN REFUGEE fleeing from a Trump America…… I hope another country will take me in……… I PROMISE I’M NOT CONTAGIOUS.

This idea would have a much better chance of adoption if he didn’t present every example as preventing republicans from winning. Wtf, he’s part of the problem. We need to focus on the idea and not try to twist it before it even has a chance

I like this idea. My state obviously has party primaries and since im independent i have 0 say in who they choose as candidates. Its honestly very undemocratic.

I don’t know if what he is talking about can happen because of so many stubborn and stupid people stuck in their brainwashed minds
But you have to admit he sounds way more intelligent than Donald Trump or Biden

So glad I had the chance to meet Andrew in Iowa a few times during his presidential campaign! He gets it! So smart, and nice! I love that he didn’t just sit at home, and is still sharing his policies that can actually help America!
