Wikipedia info can be changed. College professors do not recognize Wikipedia as a trusted source of information and therefore do not accept any papers written with info sourced from there. This was told to me by a family member’s girlfriend who attends a well-known medical college. I don’t get my information from Wiki because of this which is what started a conversation between my family member and his girlfriend.

am i the only one thinking this talk is showcasing a somewhat dangerous post-modern utilitarian ideology? relativistic concepts of truth and norms and openended words and dull definitions like “strong rules” “transparency” mean next to nothing in the scope of the internet (today), if your goal is “getting it right most of the time” . don’t get me wrong, i use wikipedia a lot and i love the project. but this talk could have been such a great starting point for a conversation about misinformation and filter bubbles etc. from a unique standpoint nonetheless. i don’t claim ill intent or malice, but this entire talk just seems so very naive and blind on at least one eye.
lacosasuper
June 29, 2022 at 10:44 am
But isn’t it truth that if humans need a place to put truths than it’s better to be the most shareable truths? I think that humans must have the humility to recognize that our concept of truth IS right now what the most people think it’s true. I think that the goal of wikipedia is to change this into “the minimum set of well-known information”
Paul Roth
June 29, 2022 at 2:47 pm
@lacosasuper i’m with you ideologically. but wouldn’t you agree that wikipedia is an excellent enabler for any kind of misinformation? (from low level fraud all the way to cheating on your résumé, to altering or censoring history/culture/…) i’m not proposing a better system, which i don’t know how that would look like, nor am i against wikipedia or the amazing idea of transcultural global knowledge transfer and the empowerment which that means. i’m all for non profit companies with the goal of a flat hierarchical, non-elitist organizational structure. and of course i’m totally for a free of charge, public education platform and so on, but the talk just glosses over the subject of fake news, information bubbles and misinformation. i find that to be kind of the most important thing/one of the biggest problems of our time, connected to almost everything social/economic/political. its all part of the unwanted problems and tasks the information age has handed us in the last 20 odd years, together with all its perks and benefits. but ist just not mentioned. to me that’s kind of like if the wiki entry for “jesus of nazareth”just didn’t say that he was killed by his peers…

If each of us can have different truths, they become opinions not truths. If truth were flexible then there would never be a sound argument as the premises of an argument would only be opinion and may be valid, but not sound. I think you’ve just confused the situation completely bypassing Logic. Minimum Viable Truth (MVT) is a delusion.

wikipedia works because millions of people edit and rewiew the stuff on there and most of them do so independently from eachother.
the truth can be checked and accepted by any of these people but a lie requires many people to agree on one thing that can not be proven.
there is only one truth but billions of alternative lies. so the same truth will be told by anyone who decides to tell the truth. but every liar will tell a slightly different lie and that way no lie will be able to gain enough momentum to compete against the truth forever.
hide a lie and chances are that it will never come up again exactly the same.
but hide the truth and it can always be found again

Everyone knows that TED is biased to the left. This is why TED viewers have no idea that Wikipedia is also biased to the left. The vast majority of Wikipedia editors are on the left, just like the vast majority of college professors are on the left. Don’t fool yourself. You are living in an echo chamber. You are missing the real debate and valuable ideas that come from non-left sources. What we really need is debate and dialogue, but wikipedia is not where that is happening.

You literally have whole scammers utilizing wikipedia to create fake pages about themselves and creating personas to further advertise the scam and getting away with millions from people – my truth, values blah blah blah – the fact that it is an open source platform is detrimental to the WORLD!! Anybody being able to edit something with whatever BS they have on a topic is absolutely insane!! TED – big thumbs down on this one

I feel like there is potential here for learning lessons from Wikipedia’s policies, but the ideas are half baked and naive. What about when ‘my truth’ is manufactured by big oil and shipped by profiteering media? Where are the forums for productive Wikipedia-esque discourse? I’m losing faith that public opinion has any meaningful impact on policy while so many players are bad faith. Without trust there, it doesn’t matter what people believe our if they agree with each other.

What a pathetic attempt to side step the issues with Wikipedia especially with politics & religion, Her statement that it “Works well” is the biggest proof that this lady had no idea. It works well if your a leftist and you like reading one side of political slander knowing full well that some anonymous editor will prevent any changes to the lies that get put out until the person trying to do the change is eventually banned. No better than the leftist censoring marxists that are running facebook and Twitter atm.

Funny how this came out at the same time as an Eckhart Tolle’s new video, that talks about the same topic. Once we stop gripping so tightly to our opinion, it becomes waaaay easier to get to the truth, or at least an agreement.

Is she out of her mind? Wiki is insanely biased. Good grief. It will address “controversy” along party lines for sure. For right wing types it’s way more damning, and for left wing types it’s either ignored, or only given a tiny mention, usually from a left leaning source calling it nonsense. FWIW I’m politically homeless so I have no team to cheer for except team honesty, and Wiki is disgusting. When left-leaning types are controversial to right leaning types, this gets often ignored as if it’s not a thing. They make it very clear. This woman feels like the ends justify the means. She has absolutely no integrity as a human being because she could not possibly believe what’s coming out of her mouth. It’s absolutely despicable how much people get away with denying objective reality.

Truth and facts are totally meaningless in 202x times. All that matters is money, image, marketing, beliefs, social media, propaganda, and merchandise. Nothing more. 💪😎🤟
Facts are for pu$$13$. As long as you believe in something, then, it’s correct. You just block and ghost anyone who disagrees with you in one simple click! If you’re popular and rich, you win, they lose. Simple.
