Surface Pro 7 review: Hello, old friend 🧙
Bridget Carey

Lots of passion in the comments so let me just clarify that I’m not pro or against buying NFTs. I have had lots of questions, as millions of people do, and I wanted to dive into the world to get an up-close look to see what people do with NFTs and how it’s shaping the future of art — and I learned a lot. I bought what is essentially a “print” as a memento to better understand it. But if you spend your own money to invest, this is very much gambling.

I’m all for exploring new things, but the rhetoric of this video feels very much like an ad for what many consider a scam.

@Bridget Carey I’m just doing my part ma’am, same as every other angry voice on the internet. Only difference is the way we communicate it. That being said, if anything I said held value, then I’m happy I could share it with you.

As pointed out, an NFT is just a voucher pointing to a title of ownership.
Ergo, NFT art(ist) is not a pertinent denomination. It’s digital art(ist).
4:01 The explanation by the curator is horrible, in no way clear nor illuminating for anyone not accustomed to the tech.
The reason simply selling a digital copy is, it is at best difficult at worst impossible to duplicate – especially at scale – physical production like painting and sculptures.
Whereas copies are easy to make for digital oeuvres, to the point an oeuvre can be infinitely duplicated and is actually automatic when accessing any reproduction for commercial – e.g.: marketplace – or promotional purposes – e.g.: articles – hence the introduction of DRMs with the advent of digital records of music and piracy was booming.
Though they cannot prevent reproduction, NFTs a tools to introduce proof of authenticity and rarity in the digital world, in a digital form.
Which is valuable for digital artists.

I didn’t realize NFT did so much, I see why now ppl make money off it, but I can see it does have an interesting future, certainly NFTs need to make the whole idea easier for individuals like myself with no real pros of it all. Thx Bridget and the cnet crew.

If there is 251 of them, why is it still considered non fungible?
Bridget Carey
August 19, 2022 at 5:10 am
My take — and please chime in if I’m wrong — is that people can resell it for different amounts like eBay. But this still feels a bit wonky of an answer. The value is still… funging? Day to day I see others accepting different bids and listing it, some not selling.

NFT “art” is not stored on any blockchain, you are paying for a link to the location of where the image is stored.

What gets me is most of this stuff would’ve been given away as free wallpaper a couple of years ago.
Jorge Lugo
August 19, 2022 at 12:23 pm
You can still download all these for free and use them as wallpapers. They say “only buy it if you love the art”, but what they deliberately omit is that if all you care about is loving the art, then “technically owning it” is meaningless.
I love hundreds of artists’ work. I consume it every day, in a number of ways. Not once have I felt the desire to “own” an arbitrary token of their work. If you wanna support an artist, just donate to them, commission an original piece, Patreon, the ways are endless.
Ivanoski
August 19, 2022 at 12:57 am
you do know you can right click any nft and save it ? also ,you don’t own anything, just a url to the art ,not the art itself, also “days to appear in my account”? that’s thanks to the inefficiency of Blockchain, quite honestly it can all be done without Blockchain, nft is just a fad and there are better ways to support digital artists

I’m confused. Can more than one person by the same piece of NFT art?
Bridget Carey
August 19, 2022 at 5:04 am
That artist made a limited amount of copies for people buying one at his show, like when an artist makes a select number of prints. I own like no. 5 of 251, and there’s what’s essentially some code to verify that my account owns it. But a lot of these collection-based ones (bored apes) are unique images.
A Bachelor's Life
August 19, 2022 at 4:59 pm
@Bridget Carey Sounds like what you’re saying is the artist has to make more than one copy because only one person can buy each one?

“I can easily see how NFTs can become part of our everyday lives in a few years”
How? Art as a financialized asset (which is what every single NFT proponent wants you to believe they are, the “community” stuff is thinly veiled shilling and nobody needs to pay for “technical ownership” of a piece of art they only deeply love) is not something anyone but the ultra wealthy are concerned with in everyday life. Ownership of intangible concepts is not something almost any typical person actually needs to confront on any regular basis. Nor should they, we should care more about sharing and experiencing art than owning it.
NFTs are a step toward the financialization of literally everything – from our art, to eventually mere concepts and words. Stop trying to paint everything in a neutral light. Everything good about NFTs is only good insofar as it supports even more spurious, speculative, and destructive forms of capitalism. More tenuous and hype-fueled avenues for monetization is not a solution to the problems of artists, just like Fivver and Upwork were not the miraculous savior for creators they thought it would be.

So basically it’s people hyping jpegs and gifs that you need to pay thousands for. Definitely a scam, just like crypto, metaverse and blockchains

August 19, 2022 at 3:27 pm
NFT idea is that in future people will use VR or AR glasses, but it could end up like 3D tv, except 3D tv existed in that time when peope thougt it could become standard (like 10 years ago) and AR even doesn’t exist and metaverse too, but you should buy nft for something that doesn’t exist and think vr and ar will become popular. This NFT art doesn’t have any value, but I can agree that people buys many stupid things, but I don’t think it will become popular / everyone to use it

No thanks NFTs are ridiculous, they are just like any other short lived get rich quick scam.
Probably only a matter of time before the NFT hype dies harsh death and all those NFTs will be worth nothing
