One point that we must emphasis to is the fact that your journal IS NOT SYNCHRONIZED WITH YOUR ICLOUD account (yet). So if you delete the app, you’ll delete all it’s content. Forever. Just be aware of that. It happens to me…

    December 1, 2023 at 12:43 pm

I like the fact that you mentioned that the posts are for yourself, and you’re wondering why it’s important… I think the goal is not only to get access to your memory or your old activities or souvenirs… but journaling is important to STOP… and start thinking about you, your life, your situation, and your goals. It’s so easy to being lost in Facebook or Twitter, watching meaningless videos over and over like a robot. It’s important to stop, sometimes.

That’s the point… to NOT share… is nothing sacred anymore? I applaud Apple for keepin’ it real. Do it for yourself, not to impress your neighbors and friends, you will be a better person for it.

Thanks for updating us on the journal app. I didn’t know what it was for. I don’t think I’ll use anything that will lock me into a specific phone brand. But it’s nice to keep up to date on these things

I think the amount of data the phone is collecting is scary. And the promised security is a facade if you don’t subscribe into their icloud model. All this enhanced with AI makes it even more scarier

Questions, if your journal is backed up to iCloud can you access it from your iPad and your iPhone? Can you use Apple Pencil to write in the Journal app on iPad ?

    • @jeffbonar7716

      December 1, 2023 at 10:12 pm

At the moment, no. It’s only an iPhone app as of 17.2. But I’d be really surprised if they’re not already planning on iPad and Mac updates in the future.

why do people insist on calling or referring to apple improving their products and user experience, as a “lock in” “walled garden” “preventing you from leaving”… would you rather they make them worse, leave them stagnant with worse user experience?

    I want that on Mac

  30. @rusepoix

    December 2, 2023 at 7:07 am

    Dear Bridget,
Since macOS now supports iPhone apps, you should be able to save your Journal’s content on a Mac, photos included. I don’t use an iPhone because the audio sucks, compared to my trusty LG V40 (with its high-impedance audio jack and LDAC codec support, ask Steve Guttenberg…), but I’m a writer and have been using Pages for over 20 years to keep a diary and write novels.
Pages supports all sorts of multimedia files and made me ditch MS Word when I updated my first iMac (the 1998 one with Mac OS 9) to Mac OS 10.2 Leopard. Word couldn’t handle long files and hundreds of fonts without crashing twice an hour. Pages never let me down, except when Apple removed half of the advanced features for the iPad, but I had bought it and just stopped updating till 2 years ago, when they finally restored long-lost features, like footnotes and the double-page display mode, very convenient with a 27′ screen, since you literally can see both of them at full size, plus sidenotes. Being light-sensitive, I’m a big fan of the dark mode as well.
Just know there’s no point keeping a diary if it’s just meant to be family-friendly. Social media serve your public persona; a journal’s meant for processing your intimate thoughts without oversharing like Elon Musk, who should know better at 52, being a rocket scientist and all. I’m the same age and not as smart, but 32 years of journaling made me wiser, and a decent wordsmith in my native French language.
Take care, Mrs. Carey, and please keep making my Friday.

  31. @LibertaliaExplorer

    December 2, 2023 at 7:26 am

Would have been nice if you had toned down the antics (seems like you are stopping yourself from laughing mid-sentence).
Came off as an insincere review and almost like you’re taunting Apple (keep in mind that this is just version 1).

  32. @ninjanerdstudent6937

    December 2, 2023 at 8:18 am

Handwriting is better because the speed of writing slows down and allows the processing of emotions. Journaling is a dedicated time to stay off of a screen and reflect on recent emotional events. Also, I only clicked for Bridget’s beautiful face.

  34. @rc2257

    December 2, 2023 at 9:47 am

Great video, makes some important points I haven’t seen in other reviews, like the inability to search.

I can kind of understand why Apple didn’t give us the ability to share stuff from the journal app.. Journals are generally intended to be private. Still, though, the multi-media journal entries you can create with it are sometimes going to be things you’d want to share, but can’t.

Anyway, thanks for the thought and time you put into make this video review. It was really helpful.

See I’m an android phone user, but back in 2018 I try to switch to iPhone because I’ve been an iPad fan for, well as long as they’ve been about. But I just couldn’t do it. I spent a year with the iPhone and I just struggled, I didn’t like how they did things you know? I didn’t like not having a Home Screen, I didn’t like not having app folders, I just struggled with it. I love the freedom of an android and I found androids a lot more interesting than iPhones, so I’m a bit upset but I won’t be able to use the journal feature fully because obviously when I do have an iPad Pro and it won’t be able to give me the same suggestions as an iPhone. Still won’t switch to iPhone though.

Thanks for this overview of Journal. My main reason to avoid it is platform lock-in. As you said, I think it’s another lock on the gate to the walled-garden. Another reason: it’s iPhone only, not for iPad or Mac (yet). Third, I won’t use it b/c it’s kind of creepy how much the phone “knows” about my activities. Last, Apple is trying too hard to be helpful with health. Mental health is important, journaling is good (I already journal daily). But like your list of things Apple does to help your health, it’s too much. Like, telling me to stand up, wash my hands (Apple Watch), and take time to breath, to reflect, to stop staring at the iPhone too closely, and then to stop staring at the iPhone too much/often, and to turn down my headphone volume…what am I, a kid? Too much “Apple knows best.”

I love the idea of the Journal app and I can’t wait till it’s available, sometimes we focus more on the everyday people but also forget about how there are people with mental challenges that this app will make their lives sooo much better. Also for me, I haven’t been on facebook for 2 years now and one of the things i loved about facebook was that it would occasionally remind me about past posts back when i used to post everything i ate and did and it would bring me back to the great funny moment that i would forget about. Also I don’t believe in having to share your entire life with the world, my life is much better when i share my experiences with people that i care about and that care about me and i love to share them in an old school conversation, and i know I can’t share my journal but it can help me remember those moments I love to share in a simple conversation. And finally the journal is a great way to be thankful of your accomplishments, that should be an everyday thing to help you stay a flote in this crazy world. Can’t wait for iOS 17.2

  55. @danielsolstrand
