ya, it’s the calories and lack of exercise, not that pet food is full of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, GMOs, all the artificial nutrition they throw in and of course the fact that all of it is processed until there is nothing healthy left at all..ya, it can’t be any of that.

How about you tell people not to get exotic animals they don’t belong in your house. A sugar glider is not an animal anyone should own.

In my family we have two cats. One eats the pills when she has to take them. We just put the pills infront of her and she eats them. The other one requires at least two people holding her and one person to open her mouth and make her swallow it. My dad had to go to the ER to get stitches once 😅😂

I LOVE THIS ONE! I’ve been waiting, and wondering if they were ever going to do a Veterinarian -one. As a Veterinarian, myself, I take great pride in my Profession. And I’m glad that there are people asking these questions to better take care of their Pets; as well as other animals that may not necessarily belong to them, but they still care for. Don’t be afraid, or nervous to ask us questions about the health, and welfare of animals. We encourage you to ask as many questions, as you have, possible. It’s better for everyone to know exactly, what you’re dealing with; regarding animals. Be responsible. Take good care, and be kind to the animals around you.

We have 2 cats and 2 dogs in our household and our vet and his staff are literal lifesavers. He found a corncob stuck in our little dumpster diver’s duodenum that was lodged and causing her to become very sick very fast, so he quickly got her on the operating table and took removed it. He still calls her Corncob when we walk through the door. 😊 Thank you for what you do.

The secret to giving a pill to a cat is butter. Coat the pull in butter, gently squeeze the back of the jaw and push the pill to the back of the mouth. Strike the throat to encourage swallowing and kiss your cats nose. The last step is optional but I always do it

Feeding animals the recommended amount on the food bag is what causes it to me!! Most house cats should be no more than 10 Lbs and yet there’s recommendations for up to 15 Lbs cats. I give my cats a quarter less than recommended and that works great and they aren’t hungry all the time!

    • Kiera H

      May 7, 2022 at 2:14 am

Ask your vet. Or feel the ribs you should be able to feel them but they shouldn’t be too prominent. Google dog body condition for examples of what’s good and what’s under or overweight. If your dog is too thin and won’t eat more food then they definitely need to see a vet to make sure they’re not sick

i guess she’s hiding something about neutering that can cause obesity, directly or not.
100% of 8 cats that i had before, and about 20 cats of my neighbors’ and my relatives’ cats, they are obese after being neutered. i’m not a doctor or even a vet, so i don’t know “how” neutering can cause obesity, but i know this fact. oh, and she answered why hedgehogs are prohibited to keep as pets, but avoided answering why we often see people keeping tigers…hmm…

    May 8, 2022 at 2:43 am

In regards to “pilling” a cat… or giving a cat a pill. Some cats just refuse pills. I had a kitty, who is no longer with us, who refused his meds. I tried EVERY method, including the pill gun. Once he swallowed it, he immediately threw it up. Every time. I’ve never had a pet so vehemently opposed to taking medicine. Unfortunately, I think that’s why he’s passed away…

Switch to neutered dog diet, because neutered pets tend to eat more but burn less calories, so they may have to get a more appropriate diet (and exercise!)

Thank you for not declawing, and also advocating for people not adopting exotic pets unless they’ve done their research! Thank you also for advocating for spay/neuter <3 My first pet as an adult was a hedgehog, and while he received excellent care and lived a long and happy life and while I loved him so much, I would never advocate for anyone keeping a hedgehog as a pet. They are complicated and have needs that can be be difficult to need, and they also are stinky and grumpy little guys. I've tried to talk many people out of getting them just because they're cute if they are not prepared to give them the right care. Thank you again!!!

I wish she would’ve touched more on the quality of certain grains compared to others. a pet food with wheat or barley is going to be better quality and healthier than something with corn or rice.

cutting a food with grains (which is ultimately why pet food contains non-meat ingredients in the first place, to lower the cost) is best done when using a more nutritive grain rather than a less nutritive grain. wheat and barley have minerals that dogs need, along with higher fat and protein, corn and rice have very little and are much higher in starch, which isn’t completely necessary for dogs.

  99. Arxl Blacktip

    May 10, 2022 at 4:56 am

So, I like her, but she has outdated information on “grain-free” diets. In 2019 the FDA, after being given research done by independent universities, stated that grain-free and pea protein diets caused a significantly elevated rate of enlargement of the heart in all breeds. There have been young, small breeds that die of this condition, even. You may have noticed a sudden introduction of ‘Ancient Grains’ now in dog food, which seems like the logical step for companies that are trying to phase out grain free sales. Unfortunately, the FDA hasn’t forced dog food companies to put a warning that these ingredients can be dangerous. Also, to those concerned about a grain allergy/intolerance in their dog, grain allergy is only beaten by carrot allergy in the rarest food allergies in dogs.

    • JKalin0249

      May 10, 2022 at 8:08 pm

i know right? I have clients come in all the time saying their dog has a grain allergy. Never tested. When I tell them the most common allergies are to chicken and beef, their heads explode. lmao

  104. Allison T

    May 10, 2022 at 3:18 pm

For the horse de-worming question, I’ve always heard of doing a double round of de-wormer, as the eggs often don’t get killed the first time around, so after they hatch, another round is used to kill them off.

Another tip for giving cats medicine: grind pill dosages into powder and mix with wet food, and do not offer them other food. My cat used to need to take pills twice a day, every day, for like six months. This medicine was ONLY available in pill form. I knew wrestling with her every day for that long was unrealistic so this is what I came up with, and it worked. Some cats don’t mind being manhandled and will forgive you for shoving a pill down, but for mine that wasn’t an option – I wouldn’t have ever seen her again after the second or third attempt 😂

I had no idea that declawing your cat was bad for them. Back when my cat was a kitten about 11 years ago my mom got my cat declawed and it calmed her down significantly. I never thought it hurt her in any way. I will remember that for next time I get another cat

    May 11, 2022 at 8:42 am

i’m honestly so shocked that declawing seems to be a common thing in the US. vets in germany would never do that if someone requestet that. also why tf is it legal in the usa to adopt any kind of exotic animals as pets?! another disturbing thing i saw many times is that ppl put their dogs in cages and don’t walk them at least 3 times a day.. you guys are really cruel.

    • ee

      May 12, 2022 at 12:10 am

i agree with all of what you said except not all dogs need walking three times a day, especially small dogs, they do need other play times though

    • i'm a total mess but it's fine

      May 12, 2022 at 1:02 am

@ee yh actually you’re right, two times can be ok and there can be some lazy days when you have a garden (if you have a lot of land around your house it’s ofc fine to not walk the dogs that often) but still the cages are so disturbing to me 🙁 i know no one here who puts their dog in a cage except for one woman who takes her dog with her to the office and he’s wild so he has to be in there while she’s working but he’s still right next to her the whole day

I brush my dog’s teeth every night before bed. A lot of people don’t seem to know that dogs need their teeth brushed. Just chewing on bones is not enough, and no, contrary to popular belief, feeding a hard kibble does not clean their teeth any more than eating a hard cracker would clean your teeth. Imagine if you had tons of plaque on your teeth and your gums were inflamed. You wouldn’t feel very good. Dogs (and most animals) have a natural instinct not to show signs of sickness, pain, or any kind of weakness, so they will keep on going like nothing is wrong until it gets so bad they can’t eat. Also, any time an animal has a medical issue that is causing them pain or discomfort, this can come out as increased anxiety and/or aggression. So bad dental health can have behavioral effects as well.

for cat meds: what i like to do is give them a few pets, then squat above them and hold their bodies firmly between my thighs with their head facing forward. you want to be just low enough on the ground that they cannot stand to their full height and try and run, but obviously you do not want to sit on the cat. i will then dose the medicine and ensure they swallow. this must be all done quickly. if they struggle a lot just let go and try again in a bit.

if you wedge your finger right at the end of a cat’s jaw they cannot close their mouth fully. it is way more effective than trying to pry open their mouth at the front. the main thing, however, is to be quick. with cats you only have about a 3 seconds window to put something in their mouths, and it gets harder if they see it coming. don’t try to corral or corner them or otherwise act in a way that would get them suspicious.

You don’t need to declaw a cat. The cat will almost never scratch you if they love you. Proof: my cat hates being held and used to jump out of my arms, scratching me to get that leverage to get away quickly. Now that she knows me, when she jumps out of my arms she leaves her claws in. Now, if I tried to do something truly heinous to her like if I tried to brush her teeth, she might still scratch. Oh, I just realized there’s another reason you might want to declaw; if the reason you want to declaw your cat is so that they won’t scratch up your furniture, first f*** you for choosing your furniture over your alive pet and second there’s this motion sensitive compressed air can that you can buy that will spray air at your cat if they come near an area that you don’t want them in, and they’ll pretty quickly learn to stop going near that area to where you won’t even need this can there anymore.

I’m just astonished that we’re still on the “horse de-wormer” nonsense. Ivermectin is a drug with a wide range of medicinal uses in most mammals. Yes, it is a good antiparasitic. However it has been used to treat malaria and many other ailments. I’m sure there are individuals who sought out ivermectin intended for use in horses to treat or prevent COVID-19. Just like I am sure there are people who think shooting heroine into their feet is a good idea. CNN is not and has not been a reputable media outlet in quite some time. If you are going to watch any news channel, I highly recommend you supplement that information with research of your own. Their own medical expert Dr. Sanjay Gupta publicly stated that what his colleagues stated about Joe Rogan using horse de-wormer was exaggerated at best. Willing ignorance and complacency will not solve anything.

Squirrels can be trained. For the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the newer one) they trained the squirrels for that one scene. Having said that, they had to run through certain behaviors hundreds of times to get the squirrels to do it. So, yeah. Maybe possible. Not easy. Some people do befriend squirrels, but those little suckers are super hyper and I think if you have to ask, you shouldn’t be doing it. They do look so pettable though.

Evidently people have had alot of success with squirrel pets in the past “While colonial Americans kept many types of wild animals as pets, squirrels “were the most popular,” according to Katherine Grier’s Pets in America, being relatively easy to keep.” You can see many squirrels as pets in paintings of the time. Not saying Id want one, or that they were box trained !

the thing with hedgehogs is the domesticated variety (african pygmy) would die if they got out into the NY wilderness. they are not built to hibernate even though they will if they get cold enough. the NY winter would quite literally kill them. the ban against hedgehogs in most states is purely out of misunderstanding.

    Since she didn’t actually give any negatives about neutering dogs;
If you have a very insecure/anxious/scared/panicky dog, neutering them may make this even worse. Not being neutered tends to give them some confidence in some aspects. My dog isn’t neutered for this reason and although his obsession with non-helped bitches is sometimes a little annoying, he himself was the result of non-neutered dogs and is probably the most beautiful accident I’ve ever seen. Besides, it’s not like breeding practices have been too great for our dogs and not everybody wants a breed.

Can confirm the facts about Sugar Gliders. My last gf had sugar gliders and their health is very fragile. Sensitivity to temperature(always need to be kept warm), having to specially prepare their food and a special diet is needed too, they are a social animal so they tend to not do well kept alone without one or more other sugar gliders. Very cute lil buggers though! Being nocturnal creatures they are up and playing and doing their thing in the middle of the night and can be quite grumpy if you wake them during the day to play with them. Although their grumpy behavior is cute too, lol.

“what causes obesity in cats and dogs?” Not what but who and the answer is YOU, the owner that has to ask because you don’t read the food label and either give your pet a full bowl of food, or you feed them breakfast lunch and dinner. I buy my cat an expensive cat food and I only need to feed her 1/2 cup a day based on her weight.

Well, the vet recommended a dental cleaning for my dog. My dog is aggressive and would definitely bite them… which only means they would have to report my dog to animal control SO f- it. He’s not having his teeth cleaned. That’s why there’s a bunch of dental sticks etc to help keep their teeth healthy.

    • Angie

      May 17, 2022 at 7:11 pm

Dogs usually get put under anesthesia for dental cleanings, so the dog won’t even be conscious during the procedure to bite. If you let the vet know that the dog is reactive they’ll usually put a muzzle on it and handle it properly to prevent bites. Even if a bite happens, as long as you let the vet know and take all proper precautions beforehand, it’s extremely unlikely that they’ll report it to animal control. Dental sticks don’t prevent dental disease 100%; they do less for the dog than brushing their teeth, and most people aren’t brushing their dogs teeth regularly anyway. Most humans brush their teeth twice a day and STILL develop dental diseases, which is why it’s so important for you to get a proper cleaning done at the dentist every now and then. Same thing for dogs. If you still have concerns, talk to your vet.

  256. Lizabeth Daniel

    May 17, 2022 at 11:06 am

I’m a vet tech. I wish she would have mentioned that grain free diets have been linked to heart disease in dogs and cats.

There are virtually no benefits to a grain free diet as allergies to grain are very rare. Grain diets includes taurine which is important to an animals health and prevent DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs & cats.

It breaks my heart to see how many grain free diets are lining the shelves, and it doesn’t help when a vet on a popular YouTube channel doesn’t even bother to mention anything. But hey, I guess that’s Banfield for you.

How can you train a cat to let you brush their teeth if they were not raised having it done? My shelter kitty does not like to be picked up (he’s learning how to sit in laps right now, but he’s not very good at it yet… Still very cute), and he definitely doesn’t like any attempts to be cleaned (eye goobers, teeth, claws). Is there a way to help his dental health or train him to be more comfortable with a tooth brush when he hates being held? Especially now that’s long outgrown kittenhood.

what causes diabetes in cats is due to not feeding a species appropriate diet. cats should not be eating any form of carbohydrates like corn wheat and grain. cats should be feed a raw diet consist of organs, muscle meats and raw meaty bone. cats on this diet dont get overweight and diabetes. Also brushing a dog teeth or cats teeth is ridiculous. feeding a species appropriate diet this wouldnt be the case. dogs and cats get dental diseases and plaque due to the poor quality high carb and high sugar foods. ive been feeding raw for years my dogs and cats teeth are white as printing paper and their mouth never smells. raw meaty bones is the natural tooth brush for carnivores..

  323. Squishy The Vampire

Sugar gliders definitely shouldn’t be pets. Most animals that are being “domesticated” are more trouble, for both people and the animal, than it’s worth.

Grain free food has actually been a blessing for me. My Pitbull started chewing holes in her fur, switch to grain free she stops. Accidently buy grain dog food, figure maybe it was just a fluke, she starts again. I could pay a vet 60,000 and my car to confirm, but I’m just not going to fix what ain’t broke.

Squirrels are able to be trained, they can learn how to get into pretty much any food container. They can even get through elaborate obstacle mazes to get food. They can’t be trained like dogs/cats/rats, to do tricks and go to the bathroom in a specific place, but they certainly can be trained.

My cat does not like wet food or mushy treats. When he had to take medication I asked for liquids. I held him in my lap (which luckily he loves) and used a syringe to squirt the medicine into his mouth. I watched a video showing that you can place the syringe in the side of the mouth between the teeth and gently press down on the plunger, worked perfectly. Don’t try to open the mouth and force medication down it’ll just be a disaster. If your cat loves wet food or pill pockets you can hide liquids or pills in either!

I do all the right stuff with my dog. I handle their feet regularly, including separating the toes, I care for their small injuries in a straightforward manner to minimize emotional response, and yet, I try to clip their nails and they scream like I’m sacrificing them to a pagan god. Now, understand, it’s not the way they respond when the vet or groomer clips them, just me.

I’ve been feeding my wild squirrels for ages. I heart them. I have to keep their food in a glass jar, outdoors, cuz when I used to keep it indoors they tried chewing a hole through my door to get at it. Nearly succeeded too. And yeah. They are squirrely. Been scratched and bit a couple of times. But mostly they are fun to have around.

So sad to hear a veterinarian say “or even a rat”. First off, they’re social animals so they need to live with other rats of the same gender, secondly saying “even” a rat makes it sound pretty bad. Rats are what we call pocket dogs, they are probably the best pet you could possibly have.

Squirrels are great friends, and outdoor pets! At least for my grandfather. He has had wild squirrels become hand tame to him his whole life. Climbing up his cloths to sleep nestled in his neck collar. Lazing about the house, coming and going. It was like a wonderland of squirrels and birds every time I visited.

I have to give my cat three meds multiple x a day, everyday. I found a pharmacy that will compound two of the meds into a transdermal pen that’s placed in her ear flap and i have it shipped every month. The third one is potassium, I have it in a gel and in a flavorless powder. I alternate but the gel is easier for me to ensure the proper dose is eaten by her. She won’t eat it on her own so what I do is wrap her in a towel or blanket like a burrito, with her her head poking out. I open her mouth by putting my fingers on the corners and once she opens it I hold it open long enough for me to quickly dab the gel on to the back of her tongue. I then hold her mouth closed gently for a few seconds and stroke her forehead until I hear or feel her swallow, then she’s free to go. The powder, I mix it into those broth pouches, putting most of it at the top so she laps it up first.
    Hope this helps someone.

“squirrels don’t make good pets” … I call BS, my aunt had a pet squirrel she tamed. It was already an adult when she tamed it, it wasn’t even hurt and nursed back to health or anything. Just a random wild squirrel she feed and tamed and that thing would run right up to her everyday and jump on her shoulder and stay there until. It even got use to being inside the house so she would take it inside sometimes. But mostly it was an outdoor pet squirrel that would come running to her everytime she was outside.
