A day late and a dollar short for Apple, though. Apple decided to revive MagSafe in a more modern version for their upcoming 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pros, based on current rumors.

Here we go. Fires via thinner gauge wires that claim 240 Watts!

  3. lasarith2

    May 30, 2021 at 4:28 pm

It won’t do anything for devices we already have, because they’ll draw there maximum wattage from the cable, anything above that is only newer devices/laptops that can handle 48V/5A will take advantage of the full 240Watt.

I hope it solves the low wattage high end GPU laptop scam going on right now lol

I think that manufacturers should be required to label what version is their cable. Especially on some of the older usb-cs

usb c is nice and all… but shouldn’t it fit in any usb port, hence the name “usb”? This has been bothering me….

The future needs to hurry up. I want everything to use USB-C; thumbdrives, monitors, audio, graphics cards, controllers, the list goes on.

Too bad 99% of outlets aren’t 240v unless you’re hooking up next to your washer/dryer

For a tech news channel, somehow CNET’s late for news like this. This news was weeks, if not months ago. :

  26. tld8102

    May 31, 2021 at 10:43 am

with so much power running through the cable… i see a potential problem already. so manufacturer will make dirt cheap low quality UsbC cables and with 240W running through them may pose a serious fire hazard. and is thunderbolt4 future proofed and already is engineered for this 240W standard?

  27. jjcoolaus

    May 31, 2021 at 11:59 am

I don’t think hotels, cars and airports are going to be upgraded to 240w USB C anytime soon. These days you are lucky to find a 10 watt usb a outlet in a hotel room. I predict 2030 at least before its ubiquitous

How is it technically possible for a small connector like USB-C to be able to take up 12A without fusing???

  42. Josh Haughton

    May 31, 2021 at 5:11 pm

I was hoping for an explanation on HOW it’s going to work. ie: Increasing the electromotive force (voltage), the gauge of the cable, etc.

    • Dóra Dávid

      June 1, 2021 at 4:10 pm

      I think it’s work with 48V/5A.

    • IamG3X

      June 2, 2021 at 12:41 am

@Dóra Dávid key word is HOW. I read that 240W so yes 48V at 5A. That’s huge. I think he’s wondering if the cable is thicker or something else.

Do these features apply to current generation USB-C or only applies to USB4?

So if I have an non-USB4 port and cable and monitor, will it power the monitor through a Mac mini/MBP?

Yeah just what we need is another type of usb that is not a generational leap but an incremental to the USB 3 standard. It makes getting cables for the non tech person more complicated than it should be. We need USB 4.0 standard already.

  78. Gabby Valenciano

    June 3, 2021 at 1:05 am

Benefit of old laptop chargers is they don’t accidentally fall off. Type C is short, also a problem on phones when using it while charging, they prolly need to make the metal component longer?
