One item not mentioned in his answer regarding rent control is that in many places that have it, most notably Stockholm, Sweden, most rent control apartment never leave the hands of the family that lives in them, and usually the people who have them are smart, opportunistic people, and higher earners.

So you end up mostly subsidizing housing for the well off, while constricting supply elsewhere and driving prices up for everyone else.

Paris (& many cities) are perfect UNLESS you’re disabled or have mobility issues. Then it’s a complete nightmare and unusable. But as usual people would rather not consider this chunk of the population because it’s easier for them if disabled people just never leave their house or contribute to society. Step free access is all that is needed. That’s it. But it’s always pushed to the back due to costs.

Just like many here, love this episode! Very informative. Changi is also my fav airport, I used to live in Singapore and flying is a delight there. One thing that might not have made the edit is that the have the TSA security check at every gate, making the funnel where you show your boarding pass and passport not problematic. You need more man power, but it is so worth it. Less stress that you might miss your flight.

  44. @bengagnon2894

    August 30, 2024 at 6:32 pm

So, what he basically said is that rent control is bad in the US because people are too… different? As in financially disparate? Ever wondered why people are less financially disparate in other countries? Maybe, just maybe, controlling the rent is one of the key to the solution and not the other way around. Just maybe. But I guess it’s socialism, so it’s… spooky?

Also, implementing bike lanes beside parking spots is a terrible, terrible design if you don’t also put physical barriers between the spots and the lane. Which the scene at 0:26 doesn’t show. This bike lane seems pretty scary to bike on, especially if the said bike lane is interrupted every 50 meters by a driveway (the car sight being totally blinded by the parked cars…). I hope he said it and the format just cut it out. Then again, why cut this important piece of information? And why show this bike lane specifically?

And the guy saying that Boston is terrible to drive in… So what? He should’ve answered that it could also mean that it could be awesome to walk in for the same reason. Not saying that it is right now, but it could.

Also, Paris doesn’t do everything right, at all. Just ask someone who cycle there. Amsterdam is the first city to have had the idea of bike sharing. He could’ve named many other cities. Amsterdam, Oulu, Utrecht, Stockholm, or even Portland OR in the US, considering where it started… But Paris? Really? Paris inherited the Haussman point of view. Which is to destroy the fabric of the city itself. And it still stands by it to this day (just look at how it dealt with the Olympics). Paris is like an open-air museum. Beautiful to look at. Not so much to live in. Is it better than most (if not all) cities in the US – urban planning wise? Yes. But for Europe, it’s pretty average.

“City of cities”. I like that.

  46. @airtale8725

    August 30, 2024 at 7:06 pm

I mean Singapore’s main selling point is that it’s a mid-way airport to a lot of long-haul flights, so it’s unique, for most palces it’s not worth investing as much into airport dev

  47. @jacktrendell3753

    August 30, 2024 at 7:16 pm

7:54 Peter Zeihan would be nodding his head

  48. @Sacto1654

    August 30, 2024 at 8:13 pm

They should just completely ditch rent control in New York City. The prices may temporarily shoot up but given that it is now market forces that drive the cost of rent and not hampered by a rent control scheme, watch the rental price take a fast nosedive in the longer term to a more sustainable and reasonable level.

Instead of asking why Singapore is so green, ask why North America is so grey. Trees create shade, and shade cools down the area it’s shading. Ever sat in a parking lot in the peak of summer? It’s deadly. The lack of trees heats up the pavement and our homes and makes our towns and cities even hotter. More greenery and tree coverage is only a benefit to our communities. And as someone who currently does food delivery, shaded areas near restaurants are very limited, if available at all. Sometimes we need a place to sit between deliveries.

I recently visited LA/California for the first time mentally prepped to take on the horrible roads I had heard so much about… and honestly driving there was really refreshing. As Washburn says, it definitely has it’s issues, but the pocket-city development is absolutely happening. The grid-structure in much of the area is extremely easy to navigate even if you need to 3-right-turn it after meeting a one way you weren’t expecting. I’m also incredibly impressed how all the drivers there adhere to the same ridged rules of driving, and while the honking is annoying it definitely beats the wishy-washy Minnesotan driving I’ve been used to. Any city that knows how to zipper merge is a winner. 🤣

  78. @Slovakianstallion

    September 2, 2024 at 11:33 am

In all comes down to one thing – good cities are located in countries where things are regulated well and where public resources are spent on infrastructure and improvement of public life. The US is the definition of the total opposite of that and therefore it will continue getting worse.

The answer is simple – spend trillions on trains, buildings, parks, and the people who live in cities and regulate the housing market so it benefits people instead of generating profit.

Maybe next time you guys can invite an actual urban planner, and not an urban designer that has a bachelor in arts and science with an master’s degree in architecture. His answers we’re overly simplistics for many questions and concepts approached and could’ve been answered adequatly by a real professionnal urban planner. 110. @ajs11201

    September 3, 2024 at 12:20 pm

At 8:30, I think people are excluding themselves these days, so it’s not a problem of libraries being closed or being denied other venues. I agree that any place and space can be a point for social gathering, and yet the number of people riding subways and buses, walking the streets, sitting in parks, and so on, have tuned out the rest of society by wearing earbuds, or worse, giant headphones. Yes, it’s a personal decision that individuals can make for themselves, but my point is that many have already made this decision and I’d wager that only a very small percentage of society actually wants social interaction.

I love the last answer. I live in San Francisco and many neighborhoods are essentially their own cities. Meaning that everyday activities and needs are all within walking distance of where you live. I live in one of those neighborhoods and can’t imagine living in a place where you have to own a car to live.

Paris is an interesting case because their decisions are controversial within the region. In a vaacuum what they do is excellent but no one lives within Paris, only around it, so there is no perceived improvement in the city planning.

LA’s traffic problem is more frustrating when you remember that elon musk’s boring company is boring tunnels under LA so that teslas can drive underground. instead of doing something more practical like boring a series of tunnels to make a mass transit system for the LA area.

Bulgarian here – you are so right about Bulgaria. I have no idea how you know it, and howcome it just popped in your answer, but we have way too many apartments per capita in general (I mean each family has a few apartments and a villa). And every company is building new ones, for god knows who.
And I can answer how is this happening – the administration in the municipalities allows this, because land is returned to people and the want to sell it, so companies are buying and building and overbuilding everything. Why do they do that? Because of money.

    About rent control.
Our rent in Amman, Jordan 🇯🇴 back in 1975 was a mere 9 Dinars a month ($30) My parents lived in that house for 30 years. It came with a huge yard. It was wonderful for us due to rent control laws in that country, but our poor landlord suffered greatly because of it. Only after my parents died was the landlord able to reclaim his property, tear it down and build townhouses in it’s place.
If you ask me, rent control is bad.

as someone who got their master’s degree in urban planning, these are exactly the kinds of conversations being had amongst city planners every single day. it is just as fascinating as it sounds – the one crucial thing he mentioned though: as americans, we have always stood in our own way. we built car-centric, unsustainable cities at the turn of the industrial revolution, and it has destroyed our future almost indefinitely. being a city planner is just being .001% of that solution. hope this helps
