How do you deal with pain on your legs and feet, specially after mile 75 ? Do you take pain killers? Do you take anything to reduce the inflammation of the legs?

its supposed to hurt. Dont take ibuprofen during the run, it can have some severe side effects. Stop to stretch, decide if its an injury and u need to stop or theyre just tired. Hopefully you have trained for this and understand whats coming

Ultrarunning is the best sport! Seeing what the human body is capable is amazing and the community is the most supportive, best group of people you could find. In races, participants actually stop to help those that are injured or need water/food. The last one to finish often gets more cheers than first place. And the food! All the food! lol

What he didn’t say about becoming an ultramarathoner is that he previously did running in school and only quit because the coach told him he would be no good. So his body did have a lot of prior conditioning.

I did a 2 mile race today for cross country and had a 7,38 time average mile time. I felt proud until I realize people run that pace for marathons all the time. I’m still happy though, I’ve improved a mile every week so I’m happy.

Dean is great, but he should have advised caution against that adventure. It’s crazy, and a wonder he didn’t really injure himself. Gentle increments in distance for anyone 30+

  71. Hollis Williams

    September 25, 2021 at 2:55 pm

I think the writer Murakami wrote about running an ultramarathon in his book on running. He said after a while you just lose all feeling in your legs or any conception of anything lol. It’s just going too far basically, you start not being able to feel your legs. Also you haven’t slept for a while so you start hallucinating.

    • Bobbie

      September 25, 2021 at 6:17 pm

Having ran multiple ultramarathons – ive never not felt my legs. Theyre tough, and mentally grueling, some easier than others. But when youre finished you just want to do it again

  79. M-T

    September 25, 2021 at 10:07 pm

I think ultra-marathonning requires a different sense of “personality” than most sports.
I mean, you spend a lot lot lot of time by yourself, under constant pressure.

And I think that’s exactly what Dean embodies. Some sense of serenity… calm and well-versed throughout this video.

How do you get over calves cramping? I started running serious a month ago and I can barely run a mile before my calves get so tight I can’t run. I’m fairly athletic, by the way. Thanks!

  85. Цане Димитров

    September 26, 2021 at 8:59 am

I’ve always wondered why after I do a 1 mile run I feel like I’m dying but if a continue running and don’t stop I feel like I could run 5 more miles luke it’s nothing

    • ShadowFire

      September 26, 2021 at 5:34 pm

Because you aren’t warmed up yet in that first mile. But once you get past that, lactic acids are flowing and your joints are properly lubricated and your muscles are warmed up and that tightness goes away

I wish I had though to seek this advice out a long time ago. All of these tips, I learned over a ton of races which included pain, hallucinations, and one DNF due to heat stroke. Still, nothing at all compares to running. I ran two short races this weekend and cannot wait for my upcoming marathons and ultras. Dean is the best teacher!

    Wow this was amazing!!!!

    I have a few questions:
    * I noticed you have very tone biceps. Do you lift weights, or does your biceps get bigger/more toned because of your running?
    * Did you run for 81 hours straight without any sleep?
    * What did you do to prevent cramps?
    * Do you lift weights?
    * What’s your beverage of choice to drink while running?

Wow – I loved this video.

Eric was a pretty impressive guy himself and wasn’t impressed with too many people, but I swear he had a man-crush on Dean. Lol. And I can certainly see why! Eric’s stories of him were amazing. Yeah, women don’t get to pee and run. one of the many advantages men have. Women also have to deal with periods and hip issues. not complaining, but a lot of whiny men get annoyed when I qualify for a race that they didn’t and they chalk it up to be because they’re different standards for men and women. There are MANY reasons why. I think they just like making excuses when they should stop blaming others and just run faster 😅

  151. J B

    September 29, 2021 at 5:03 am

Carb loading doesn’t mean what people think it does. It just means eat a higher percentage carbs than fat and protein. I eat sushi and broccoli before a race because the balance is perfect. What you shouldn’t do is eat a ton of food like spaghetti. Pasta makes you lethargic and bloat. It doesn’t mean eat more food than usual.
