The international connections fostered by WHO are what solved COVID. The Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was created in a lab in Europe funded by both European countries and the USA.

Americans travel abroad. It’s highly likely that any emerging disease outbreak will end up in the U.S. because infected passengers on airlines will bring the disease with them. There are other international downsides, such as countries grappling with epidemics affect trades, but I’ll leave that scenario to the economics experts to cover.

I really hope other countries are able to supplement the deficit that this will cause in the WHO’s budget. It’s such an important organization. Trump obviously sees no worth in it because he just ignores all its advice and tells his citizens to inject bleach into their arms, but the rest of the world that actually had a leader with brain cells used the WHO’s advice to help contain COVID. It was really bad thanks to the ineptitude of some governments, but it would have been far worse without the WHO.
