Dr. Chappelle has a awesome personality which makes all these topics super interesting. She has her own podcast btw (it’s a toxicology called Adverse Reactions). I’ve also talked to her on mine, she was a super fun guest and she can make complex topics understanding for dummies like me

Sun poisoning is real. I got second degree sun burns and soon fell ill with flu like symptoms. It literally feels like your body is trying to force you to crawl into a cave and sleep so that you don’t go out in the sun again lol

guys, don’t follow this advice. If you have sun poisoning, please seek medical attention as soon as possible, even if it is to talk with your GP or visit an after hours clinic. People die of sun poisoning quite regularly, so i think “drink water” is NOT the most soundest of advice

The quickest, albeit not comprehensive explanation on venom and poison I have heard is:

If it bites you and you die, it was venomous. If you bite it and you die, it was poisonous.

Though my native language doesn’t really make that distinction anyways, we only really have an umbrella term for toxins.

Water, if given enough or too little will both stop the firing of nerve and neuronal cells the inability to utilize ions for muscle contractions and the stopping of some chemical reactions as cells shrivel or bloat/explode. Similar symptoms of pain and muscle fatigue, different ways to treat.

0:46 “Something else that could kill you: 225g of salt.”
0:57 “Low dose, less effects, high dose, generally higher effects”.

In the case of salt, zero grams for a long time would also kill you, because the human body can’t live without some sodium. In this case, the low dose has the same effect as the high dose.

It’s mostly fine to touch metallic mercury, and it evaporates incredibly slowly; people make way too much of a fuss. It’s “organic” mercury (i.e., methylmercury) that can lead to severe intoxication even in small amounts.

I once had 18 shots of espresso in one shift at a cafe. I started with 8 shots over ice, then had another 8 shots over ice on my break, which was already too much, probably. I then had 2 more as I was working at the bar. I felt incredibly ill. I had a considerable tolerance to caffeine, so the 8 shot drink was normal to me.

I’m glad to hear that felt tip pens don’t have enough toxin to harm a person. My youngest sister, for whatever reason, bit and sucked dry Crayola markers. My husband got sun poisoning a couple months ago, it was crazy….he was only in the sun without his shirt on for about an hour and a half, but that was enough. He was red for three weeks, and got hundreds of tiny blisters on his back, was fatigued, got a fever, and was kind of wrecked for a few days. His skin still prickles and feels like it has minor nerve damage. Do not recommend👍🏻

The water and coffee thing doesn’t really make sense. If 6 liters of water, drunk at once, kills someone, or 118 cups of coffee, then a cup of coffee may only contain a maximum of 51 ml, so as not to reach the lethal water dose beforehand.

Even though it’s more caffeine per millilitre espresso than regular coffee, a single shot of espresso contains less caffeine than a cup of regular coffee.
A single shot of espresso is 30 ml., a cup of regular coffee is 250ml
    Caffeine per 100 ml. espresso = 212, one shot of espresso = 30 ml. Caffeine per ml = 212/100 = 2.12 -> Caffeine per espresso shot = 30 ml. * 2.12mg/ml = 63.6 mg.
    Caffeine per 100 ml. coffee = 40, one cup of coffee = 250 ml. Caffeine per ml = 40/100 = 0.4 -> Caffeine per cup of coffee = 250 ml. * 0.4 = 100 mg.
FDA consider a lethal dose of caffeine to be between 10,000 and 14,000 mg. For the sake of the argument lets put the lethal dose in the middle = 12,0000 mg.
Lethal number of espresso shots: 12000 / 63.6 = 189 shots of espresso.
Lethal number cups of coffee: 12000 / 100 = 120 cups of coffee. <- consistent with Chappelle's numbers (118) To get to the 75 shots of espressos to be lethal they had to be 75 ml., but that is between a double (60ml.) and a triple (90ml.) shot of espresso. It hurts a little every time someone calls espresso "expresso". There is no x in espresso, and it is pronounced: eˈspresˌō. If you still read this you are a coffee nerd too. 🙂

5th grade teacher had a bottle of mercury. Spilled it on the wooden floor. Used straws to blow it onto sheets of paper and dump it back into the bottle. Still here 60 years later. When you say ‘You can’t do that(play with it) anymore.’ you’re just saying that people realize it can be dangerous and overreact. Daily exposure at high doses, yeah, worry. Yes, things CAN be dangerous. Benzene. Carcinogen. Got it all over my hands starting in high school, through chem labs getting my chem degree. Still here, no cancer.

It causes cancer in white mice!!!

Soon we’ll discover that cancer is hereditary in white mice.

If it bites you and you die, it’s venomous.
If it bites you and *_it_* dies, _you’re_ poisonous.
If it bites you and your friend dies, that’s voodoo.
If you bite your friend and neither of you die, that’s kinky ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I was diagnosed with sun poisoning a long time ago and it has actually effected the way I react to heat believe it or not. The headache mimicked a aneurysm and at 1st that’s what they thought but couldn’t find 1 so said sun poisoning. As for heat sensitivity, its like it changed something in my chemistry permanently. If I get too hot then I have the same but milder reaction. I’ve found that so interesting.

Asking how poisons are poisonous… that’s a question as gigantic as ‘how does traffic jam?’ and ‘what makes the wind blow?’ and ‘why do solid objects collide instead of passing through one another?’
The basest answer is pretty simple, but the details are endless.

The problem with the coffee overdose: While you are busy chugging more cups of it, your body is busy getting them out. Unless you use something with a higher concentration of caffeine or even the pure thing as a pill which is a really bad idea, you’ll have a bad day at the loo, but you are most likely fine.

I wish that when people talked about types of skin damage, they’d acknowledge what that looks like for people with darker skin. we don’t get red rashes after sunburn. even my darkest bruises are often difficult to spot because of hyper-pigmentation. the stages of healing for cuts looks vastly different because we don’t see the same change in colors around the wound sight. not to mention when you look for images to identify clinical signs, 99% of those images are of lighter skin and only marginally helpful to us looking to identify potentially serious medical issues.

I’ve had sun poisoning on the tops of my feet. My feet were so swollen and painful I couldn’t put on shoes for 3 straight days.

    Know what helped??

Taking some white vinegar, pouring it into a big bowl with ICE CUBES. Then dipping a rag, small towel, cloth, etc into that ice cold white vinegar then putting that SOAKING WET WITH COLD WHITE VINEGAR RAG immidiately on that sun poisoning.

Doesn’t smell great but when your sunburn turns into sun poisoning you’re most likely in PAIN and are swollen in the areas where it’s worse and the cold vinegar helps with BOTH within 12hrs

I have sun poisoning. It is a allergy to UVA. It isnt sun burn, it’s actually the other UV that causes sunburn in my case. It is called PMLE polymorphic light eruption. It is called poisoning because it is a delayed reaction so acts more like a poisoning than a allergy. Flu syptoms after sunburn is heat stroke I thought? I’m very confused as the info in this vid is not how i understand sun poisoning/PMLE at all.

Even she is wrong about the Mercury thermometer. It’s not good, sure, but the amount of Mercury inside a thermometer isn’t going to kill you, whether you touch it, ingest it, or let it turn into vapor and breathe it, because Mercury doesn’t turn into vapor very quickly, so it won’t have enough time to actually do damage to you because it will always be in small doses. Mercury is actually perfectly safe in its liquid form unless you have any sort of cuts or open wounds, it’s when it’s in a gaseous form that you have to worry about it. But even then, you have to be in constant exposure to it over a very long period of time or be exposed to a very high amount of Mercury gas to actually have anything bad happen to you.
Now, this doesn’t mean you should just go drinking the contents of a Mercury thermometer just because it’s safe to ingest a small amount of it, it just means you aren’t going to die or be severely poisoned if you accidentally touch a bit of Mercury

I’d like to know if anyone has the answer to this. I once recently got sunburned very badly (it was in Florida, and I am the kind of person who gets burnt very easily without tanning). However, the backs of my hands were a darker sunburn than the rest of me, almost as if they were turning purple. Is that sun poisoning?

    • Emily C

      July 30, 2022 at 9:37 pm

I don’t think the purple would be sun poisoning specifically, but it definitely sounds like you had a more severe sunburn there. It’s common for hands to get it badly because we often don’t think to shield them or put sunscreen on them. I think the sun poisoning refers more to when your body has a larger reaction to the sunburn so you get symptoms of illness.

    • Boba Fett

      July 31, 2022 at 3:53 am

@Emily C Thank you. Also, side note: the rest of it was pretty bad as well. Myself and the person helping me get my sunscreen on did not rub it in well, so I looked really patchy with a really weird pink design all over my upper body.

uhh cool, a toxicologist! Would be awesome if i could find videos about smoke here (cigarette smoke (ingredients)). My mom is allergic to it, and i wonder, if i might have inherited it somehow but less intense or maybe to not all the substances she’s allergic to. I want to get that tested, but still have to look for where and when. But maybe there are videos i can watch before. Unfortunately, the toxologist died before she could get her certificate 🙁

I always said the difference between poison and venom is if it bites you its venom if you bite it its poison. Some snakes are poisonous and thats only when you bite or touch or eat them NOT when they bite you. The reason those snakes are poisonous are because they eat poisonous frogs. And those frogs eat poisonous plant life around them to make them poisonous.
If a frog is a really pretty and a bright color don’t touch it its probably poisonous.

It’s too bad it started as a cosmetic surgery because people typically don’t understand right away when I say I’m going to get Botox shots that I mean in a medical way. Re drug combinations. My late sister found out the hard way that coke and benzos DO NOT mix. I’m sharing this because hardly anyone seems to know. If you take prescription medication, especially controlled substances, PLEASE be careful taking recreational drugs. Ideally don’t even mix your meds with alcohol. (And if you’re going to then drink _slowly_, pay attention to how your body feels, and stop before you’re drunk.)

I beg you to research recreational drugs thoroughly before you take them. Don’t take drugs alone, have a “designated driver” at parties who stays sober in case things go wrong. If you can’t find how two drugs interact BE SAFE and don’t risk it. No information doesn’t mean no interaction, possession and use laws often prevent (potentially life-saving) studies.

Surpressing education on responsible drug use is the abstinence-only of substances, and it’s about as effective at keeping anyone safe. My sister didn’t know. You do not deserve to die because you took drugs at a party one time either (or many times for that matter).

Mercury is “fine” to touch, it won’t ever do you any damage provided:
Your skin is completely and entirely unbroken.
    The room is well ventilated.
You are absolutely thorough with decontamination of your hands.

While that isn’t too crazy… disposable gloves are probably good practice. I wouldn’t bother with it haha.

On the subject of drug overdose: make sure all of your doctors are aware of all the medications you’re on. I was prescribed Vyvanse while on Cymbalta and after 3 days, I had a seizure. I had seratonin syndrome, thanks to the combo of medications. Even taking medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor, if they can interact, can cause problems. I had multiple methylphenidate overdoses before (age 14-16) and it was pretty scary. i was too scared to actually ask for help or call an ambulance and i think it nearly cost me my life once? i couldnt breathe properly had, hallucinations, couldnt see properly in general and extremely anxious and irritable. i’m extremely glad i’m off that drug because my childhood psychatrist was definetely acting extremely irresponsible prescribing a 14 year old an adult dose of ritalin PLUS a dose of vyvanse. I lost 13kg and became severely underweight at 15! crazy!

How do alcoholics survive the amount of water? I’m German. I regularly see people drink 3 liters in beer in less than 1 hour. Drinking 20 an evening is something you see in alcoholics sometimes and I don’t get how people drink 5+ liters. Beer is isotonic at least but Wtf. How can you fit it into your stomach? Yes you pee a lot drunk but still…..
