To the thunder question at 18:38, when lightning strikes it heats the air to about 25 000 degrees Celsius or 45 000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 5x the temperature of the surface of the sun, so the air heats up and expands so quickly like she said and you hear that loud noise.

A simpler way to answer the question of how we predict weather is that we can track and measure what’s happening over a vast area of land and find patterns that allow us to build models that combine previously observed patterns with current conditions.

Nuclear bombs can produce an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, which can cause electric surges.

Great example of Tornadoes hitting mounine areas is Albuquerque NM 1985. It was a EF2 and caused 1 death. It his lousisiana and I40 area. Salt Lake city also had a Tornado which was also a EF2 this also caused 1 death and a lot of damage.

When I was 13 or 14 I came very very close to being hit by lightning. I was about to start a summer job helping out the janitors in the building my dad worked at. This building was at the top of a hill and had a large patio/paved area around it. While the property manager was showing me around outside, we both pause and things just felt quiet and weird. Then my vision gets completely filled with white light that was pinkish at the edges for a fraction of a second and it was gone. The manager and I looked at each other and then just kept on. I didn’t realize until years later what had happened.

I can prove that tornadoes can go over rivers and mountains and last a while because it literally happened to me – search the June 1st, 2011 tornado in Massachusetts. It was our freakiest storm ever and one I’ll never forget.

I enjoyed the film. I do want to know where our protagonist purchased the amazing armor coated windshield and truck windows – nary a scratch to be seen! Then there was the camper vehicle that had the insane ability to drive unfettered into the midst of a tornado and emerge unscathed!
Still yet, I thought it was a good enough film., especially since I saw it in one of those 10,000 watt surround sound theaters with no shortage of subwoofers and motion controlled recliner seats that jiggled on cue!

Wow. Partly cloudy and partly sunny sounds very counterintuitive to me: partly cloudy = sunny-ish (5/8 clear); partly sunny = cloudy-ish 50%-50%. I would have thought “partly cloudy” was a kind of “cloudy” but it is actually a kind of sunny day… 🙁

Slight issue with what you said about tornadoes crossing bodies of water. Just like we mountains, tornadoes can be affected by the high and low pressure systems associated with larger bodies of water.

Not dangerous at all if you stay to the southwest of the supercell. It varies wildly depending on where you position yourself, what the road surface and traffic is like, etc.

I wish I could have sent in a question. The day this was uploaded, it had been storming outside all day where I live, but eventually the strong storms passed and all that was left was heavy rain, except for a single, extremely loud crack of thunder which startled me. I’ve heard of super bolts, and I wonder if that was one of them.

The window thing: it wasn’t about windows breaking. It was about the low pressure, and it the house is sealed tight, then the walls will bulge out and the roof will pop off.

Which is still wrong, because the windows are the weakest part of the structure and would break long before the roof pops off. Not that it matters; houses have enough natural leaks that they can equalize the pressure on their own. If they can’t, then the windows will break and equalize it. And if that’s not enough, then the pickup truck flying through your wall to land on the couch will make a big enough hole to solve the problem. Don’t waste time dinking with windows, just seek shelter.

Tornado Alley actually has 3 different areas based upon what month it is. Overall with them: it’s basically Texas to the Dakots (north and south) with Nebraska to Indiana (east and west.)
How do I know? The strongest August F5 Tornado in the country happened a week after I was born. The Plainfield Tornado of 28 August 1990 with winds estimated up to 320 mph but usually said between 305 and 310 based on what source you go to. The cloud that spun it went directly over me in Aurora, Illinois.
I will never go by the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

Are storm chasers adrenaline junkies? Yeah, to a point, but not without the intelligence to do risk assessments. I volunteer with the Coast Guard, go skydiving, I’m a pilot and wilderness survival expert, I love racing, firefighting, etc but I’m also cerebral and I enjoy learning. I understand the risks I’m taking and I understand the potential consequences of my risky actions. I’ve done some storm chasing and I’d love to fly the hurricane hunters if they’d let me, but I’m not a meteorologist, although meteorology is a big part of my airline job. So yeah, it’s a balance. The last time I went skydiving, I spent the time waiting to go up by reading my book on astrophysics. On the ride up to 14,000 feet I was talking to others about the aircraft and computing cloud formation equations. After freefall and under canopy I commented on how the air smelled like smoke on the way down but there didn’t seem to be a layer out there, but a fire source must be around somewhere.

At the end of Twister they also left the house that was hit by the EF5 and it was perfectly fine even though the barn and shed were completely stripped off of its foundation 😂

For those who don’t know: lightning striking the same place more than once is actually the principle behind lightning rods on your house. You’re purposely attracting them to a grounded metal so they don’t mess up more delicate things.

You said tornadoes can’t merge and become one. Well I’m going to say your wrong on that one. When I was six years old I saw two, yes they were two individual tornadoes coming towards my house. Guess what they merged. Thank goodness it missed my house though. No it wasn’t a multiple vorticity tornado. And people did record it with their camcorder sent it to the news. And the news even confirmed they were two separate tornadoes that merged and became one and stronger. A lot of people witnessed it other than me

The idea that tornado alley is moving east is junk science. NOAA themselves have pretty much said so, if you can read between the lines.
The main tornado threat moves around throughout the year. Mostly in Dixie Alley in fall, winter, and early spring. Then it migrates west to traditional “tornado alley” in late April through early June. After that it migrates to the upper plains and Midwest through the summer months.
That all being said, an outbreak can happen anywhere, anytime, if the correct conditions come together. Those outbreaks what have been throwing a wrench in the averages, making stats nerds think that tornado alley is migrating. The reality is that most of the USA east of the rockies can be tornado prone if the conditions come together. It all depends on the conditions. So technically all of the USA east of the rockies is tornado alley, and always has been.
2024 was an above average spring because the ENSO ended up producing favorable weather patterns at the right time. If you don’t have those favorable weather patterns, you won’t have outbreaks. No outbreaks, the averages go down. Averages go down, people think tornado alley is migrating. Don’t buy into it, pay attention to the weather forecast and the Storm Prediction Center graphics.
Also, the OG twister was a terrible movie. Supercell is way more accurate, but that’s also probably why some people thought it was boring. Real life doesn’t sell movie tickets. Over dramatized nonsense sells movie tickets. Movies aren’t an accurate representation of anything.
