The world relies on manufacturing, and manufacturing relies on heat — a massive contributor to global carbon emissions, responsible for a quarter of the world’s fossil fuel use. Energy entrepreneur John O’Donnell has figured out a better, cleaner way to generate the heat we need to make the stuff we want. Learn how his team turned simple bricks and iron wire into a powerful, unconventional “heat battery” that could deliver industrial heat at scale without the emissions — and why he thinks electrified industrial heat is the next trillion-dollar industry.

There are about 439 nuclear reactors operating worldwide.
How many does 9 billion people need if you genuinely believe that is the only way to save the climate.
Australia has 6,500TWh of fossil fueled energy need yearly and 250TWh of grid electricity and grid capacity in 1million km of transmission and distribution lines and poles and wires and transformers and switch yards and 20million meter boxes and..all at the 250TWh capacity.

So 26times more capacity to replace dirt-cheap fossil fuels ???

Australia is 26million people (and also buying nuclear powered submarines for military defence).

Now 9 billion people is even bigger, but the maths is just getting too big for little me.
Can you tell me how all this nuclear stuff is going to be paid for and the new grid capacity and…

Australia 365km transmission line humelink is costing $4.8billion, and $34billion in new projects for 3,000?? km of new.
And Australia needs 26 times more capacity. ???

Australia has 20million meter boxes and 20million roofs available.
Hot roof shading 😎 PV panels don’t need more grid capacity. Are perfect.
Dirt-cheap empty roof realestate and dirt-cheap PV panels and dirt-cheap 2cents kWh electricity and no massive grid infrastructure costs. Is perfect.
90% of the world’s population live in warm sunbelt latitudes.

    RONDO HEAT BATTERY is perfect.

EV’s massive battery on wheels parked 23hrs every day and all night long and with v2g technology is dirt-cheap massive battery storage, FREE MASS STORAGE. Also perfect.
    Grid capacity savings $TRILLIONS.

      What is all this about?
25 years ago renewables were 7.96% of total energy now they are 8.64% of total energy, all those billions while not controlling oil consumption with the extra cash and savings.
80% of most modern countries total energy is still oil based, it is in all the things around us and Net zero is total energy, not the 24% that is electricity as in Australia, when 80% renewables are reached in the coming decade it will be less than 20% of total energy so 80% will still need to be talked about.
Oil has and is still powering everybody’s lives, can’t buy solar panels and then a motorhome to do the big lap..

      @antonyjh1234good comment.
Actually 6,500TWh of fossil fueled energy used in Australia annually.
      250TWh is electricity.

So big numbers if electricity is going to stop CO2 emissions.

      Now for petroleum.
Imported petroleum for road building and maintenance and petrochemical industry and emergency use and strategic military defence reserves and emergency heating and…..
And 20years to replace all vehicles with EVs.

Facts and maths and clear thinking is needed.

      October 23, 2025 at 2:42 am

@antonyjh1234 nuclear electricity can not be scaled up when you include its new grid capacity and the roof PV technology gets better and EVs. Grid electricity will never pay if it gets much bigger.

    • @antonyjh1234

      October 23, 2025 at 2:46 am

@stephenbrickwood1602 We use oil people are killed over in our daily lives, the govt don’t want less consumption because that lowers the value of the dollar and on your nuclear comment China is building stations now where as the govt in australia wants to double the military expenditure that just one year would give 20 stations and 16 billion left over, one single years military spending could remove coal entirely along with renewables and give secure electrcity for everyone, of course this means the govt doesn’t get to input as much debt into society as they are a front for the central bank, something that does nothing but adds billions to the economy is fantastic for the interest rate that is paid through taxes for the next few decades.

    • @genhen

      October 22, 2025 at 5:27 pm

It’s not nearly as efficient to store/retrieve the energy and it loses some of the energy in retrieval

    • @James-wild

@TheOGofSkithe average battery like say a lithium ion battery. Storing heat is just a lot less efficient than storing electrons.

  8. @antonyjh1234

    October 22, 2025 at 10:14 pm

    Solution for what?
80% of our energy is still oil based, it is in the things around us and has powered our whole lives.

    • @relzyn5545

      October 22, 2025 at 11:59 pm

tl;dr: better methods for energy storage allow an increased reliance on wind and solar and the phasing out of fossil fuels.

Power grids cannot simply hold excess electrical power, that energy needs to be converted to some other form for storage. Due to the variable nature of wind and solar, a power grid that makes heavy use of them needs to store excess energy that can be accessed later. Currently, excess energy in power grids can be stored by pumping water into reservoirs to later be used for hydroelectric power. But hydroelectric plants have high maintenance costs. An alternative that could be cheaper to operate and allow for scaling up of variable-output energy sources is exciting.

another method of heat storage involves salt

    • @antonyjh1234

      October 23, 2025 at 1:31 am

@relzyn5545 80% of our energy is oil based, this is not electricity related.
Renewables are a percentage of electricity and not going to replace asphalt or nylon.

Sides step generation without taking a breath .. how many wind turbines are needed to keep the bricks super heated ? Pretty sure there’s gona be a heavy exchange loss .

    • @MistSoalar

      October 23, 2025 at 2:14 am

The mean capacity of wind turbine is around 3MW. This thermal battery takes ~100MWh.

If there’s only 1hour of good wind each day, you need 33 turbines.

If there’s 10+ hrs of wind, you only need 3 or 4.

I hope there isn’t gonna be any patent infringement.

  14. @MistSoalar

    October 23, 2025 at 2:03 am

Finland has been running sand-based thermal battery since 2022. There’s a proposal to build one on the lunar surface too. Moon’s 2 week night gets pretty cold and there’s no fossil fuel to dig up.

    • @KuroHebi

      October 23, 2025 at 8:27 am

Wouldn’t it be better to bring up solar panels and batteries? The intensity of the sun’s radiation on the moon’s surface could charge the batteries quickly, and there’s no atmosphere for clouds to form and block the radiation from hitting the panels. Would they be using the moon’s sand to build these batteries or would they be lifting tons of sand up to the moon? Doesn’t sound very efficient.
