2024 will be a dangerous year for the world, says Ian Bremmer, president and founder of Eurasia Group and GZERO Media. Forecasting the top geopolitical risks set to play out in the months to come, he untangles what’s in store for the war in Ukraine, the state of the Israel-Hamas conflict and the tensions putting democracy in the United States to the test — all while AI continues to evolve faster than governments can regulate it.

This interview, hosted by TED’s Helen Walters, was recorded on January 8, 2024 as part of the series “TED Explains the World with Ian Bremmer.” Watch more:

When speaking about what’s happening here in America, it is still difficult to understand HOW so many people became so willingly and deeply indoctrinated into the Trump exhortations. The man has always been performing without ethics and morals, and his only principals are the ones that result in HIS financial gain, not the care of the masses. May we have a re-awakening here of what we are losing to the following of this man.

Just another american propaganda, I listened for 20 mins, that’s it. Since 2014 the ukraine has been bombing and shelling peaceful residents of Eastern Ukr areas because of the ppl who live there, they are mostly Russian speaking. Yes, Ukr attacked them, not Russia. I can predict that he didn’t say a word about Somalia The US has been bombing Somalia for 14 years. US bombs are dropping on residential areas in Yemen. These weapons are aimed at some of the poorest countries of the world. How about that? Unsubscribed after 2 days of trying.

  42. @Burkhard_Ehnes

    January 11, 2024 at 2:46 pm

    ok.
    Compelling.
    In principle depressing.
    But what now?
Shall we all go to Antarctica?
Humans can only aspire something, invest into something, accept sacrifices, motivate themselves, if they have a bright, shiny goal.
If the outlook is that bad – what can only get subscribed to – than we the more need that outlook.

Who does have such one right now?
    In particular Ukrainians.

So lets start there for the benefit of all:
Could the Ukrainian common goal not get a common goal at least of the remaining decent part of the world?
Freedom, self governance, reliability, building a common, prosperous, sustainable, inclusive, green future, integrated in that beautiful diverse and fascinating Europe?
    Sure!
What have we got by that vision?
A “brand” “Victorious Ukraine”, literally as a car or consumer brand that stands for something we want more than everything else, for which we invest, save up, even sacrifice.
Should be easy to “sell” for anyone anywhere on a ballot right now.

Such necessary support for that “victorious Ukraine” – anyway only marginal -right now would easy be to organize and finance.
That support is just up to the invader’s pain boarders that we know by now, allows to liberate Crimea, starts unrest in RuZZia, leads to a 1991 situation, limits RuZZian attacks to (harmful) symbolic ones and – yes – leaves the occupied Donbas and Zaporizhzhia regions as destroyed places of nightmare. The rest of Ukraine quickly transitions into rebuilding to an ultra-modern, innovative and inclusive country, sees immigration and transforms foreseeably to a powerhouse of Europe and the entire free world.
    Let’s start!

    US vs. itself.
Shall there really be no US-citizen, that manages to rally more than 50% of the country for an inclusive agenda?
Assume – just as an not entirely hyperbolic example – David Patreaus would run as an independent candidate, Biden would drop out and with the majority of the Democratic Party support him, but still hold dear democratic political goals.
The campaign would be about values, principles, country and policies – not any more about parties, grievances and last elections.
US would stand ahead of a presidential term of reconstitution, hopefully healing and refocusing on the real Global risks.
    Let’s start!

    Warnings are needed.
But remaining in that common human habit of complaining and wining doesn’t solve anything.

    We need VISIONS!
And people that develop, describe, illustrate and – literally – “market” them.
    They are there!
    Let’s start!

    Agreed:
The third one, Middle East, is missing here. No idea. Noooooo idea….
Only that with above the local malign actors could loose their masterminds and financiers in the Kremlin…

The reason the Ukraine war became so politicized so quickly vs past wars is the same reason a pandemic became so politicized so quickly. Democrat censorship. As an independent (former Democrat), I said this would happen to the pandemic as soon as all honest (and some being science-backed) debate was beginning to be censored as “misinformation” and “disinformation”. Those being censored decided that since those doing the censoring didn’t want to allow honest debate, then the censored would just be against all pandemic mitigation measures full-stop.

Then the same Democrat-led “expert” elite class did the same thing in regards to Ukraine: they immediately labeled anybody with logical questions about the Ukraine-Russian war as “Putin apologists” and “Russian agents”. So, the censored immediately defaulted to becoming anti-Ukraine since they weren’t even allowed to ask questions.

Now the same “expert” Democrats are doing this increasingly with climate change. Therefore, the censored half of the free world is going to reject anything to do with climate change mitigation because the Democrats are immediately labeling anybody with questions as “flat-earthers” and “climate deniers”.

The Democrats are going to have to learn to allow free speech and free debate if they hope to talk others into joining their causes rather than try to censor those they oppose as “dangers to democracy”.

It is the responsability of the media to show the crimes that israel is commiting in order to stop a genocide. Hamas is a partizan group, and Israel is a state that occupies others, nazis occupied and deprived minorities in ghettos with no water, food or medicines. Those groups fighting the nazis where partizans not terrorists. The warsow ghetto also had tunnels and nazis turn it into ashes.

When something is not working maybe it’s because it doesn’t work. A bunch of guys, 250 years ago, tried to construct a system of government that would neutralize the power of kings, but having a President, a Senate, a House of R, and a Supreme Court has produced a dysfunctional system. Maybe it needs to change.
In 2008 Putin told NATO that Ukrainian NATO membership was a direct threat to Russia. The West in it’s ignorance, arrogance and stupidity chose to ignore that ultimatum. I do agree with Ian that the Russian territories that Khrushchev gave the Ukraine in 1954 need to go back to Russia.
In 2000 there was a tech crash because nobody could figure out how to make money out of the Internet. Well the answer was advertising and that’s what funds the Internet today. With that example, I predict AI will mainly be used for mind manipulation of the masses. You’ll ask a question but then the answer will guide you where a business or government wants you to go. You couldn’t trust everything on the Internet, but with AI you should trust nothing on the Internet. Sadly though it’s trust that makes groups work. Ian’s eloquent closing statement asks for trust that I don’t think is there.

I used to listen to Bremmer but less and less so. He keeps stating that America’s economy is doing very well but this is completely FALSE. America gov has borrowed US$2T that it cant sustain in 2023/4. IF gov spending was reigned in, America’s economy would not even be able to meet the rate of inflation. Russia and China would be the leading economies in REAL size and growth.

    • @evergreennj8950

      January 14, 2024 at 1:17 pm

Yep, he also maintains the US mainstream narrative on Ukraine and doesn’t mention any of the points Mearsheimer raised in 2015 regarding the West’s fault for what happened in 2014 Ukraine or Mearsheimer’s predictions if the West continued to encourage Ukraine to antagonize Russia. Russia has a lot more significant support from major powers other than Belarus, North Korea, or Iran (e.g. India and China). Germany’s industries depended on cheap energy from Russia, now Germany is more dependent on expensive energy from the US. Its renewables are far from making it self sufficient.

    • @evergreennj8950

      January 14, 2024 at 1:31 pm

It would appear Bidenomics is a copy of what the Chinese did in response to the 2008 financial crisis. The Chinese invested heavily on domestic infrastructure and its economy continued to grow. Don’t know how much debt it took on as a result. In the US, that extra government US debt combined with higher interest rates doesn’t look sustainable. I don’t think national GDP growth is as important as the general welfares of the majority of its citizens. The US GDP growth is concentrated at the top and not the bottom 70% or 80%.

You use a left wind ideological perspective to talk about what is going on on America and the world? Is laughable

Correction: it’s the vulnerability of the power structure that is most worrying to those in power. Otherwise you would t be n here spreading fear.

This is so rich! Painting Trump as a wanna be dictator, while the Biden administration is actually acting like a dictatorship. Give it up.

Wars go on all the time and always will. This is just uninformed propaganda. DON”T WASTE 42 minutes on it.

Nato is doomed. There is no post carbon future, that is another childish fantasy.

I think that Bremmer got this all right. Anyone thinking that the Palestinians are treated equally and fair, has not understood or knows how this all came about. They were cheated from the get go by anyone they dealt with (WWI WWII) and had helped out, everything that happened after. And Netanyahu has made the situation much worse. Over many many years consistently and intentionally. His intention are no different from Hamaz. Hamaz wants the Israelis gone, he wants the Palestinians gone. I am wondering how much he was or is willing to sacrifice to accomplish that, especially looking at the glaring security systems failure of the world’s most advanced security apparatus. Just to forgo any comments on that, what Hamaz did was incomprehensible, foolish, brutal and despicable. It accomplished to this point the opposite of what they had in mind, played right into Netanyahu’s hands.

Trump, misunderstood by so many it seems as a “strong man”, simply is an egomaniac driven by his believe of deserving everything he can milk out of being President. He has done that last time around, it would be much much worse should he get back into office. Trump is as Ian said a symptom of the people are being manipulated by special interest groups and a failed civics and historical education system.
People are willing to ignore and discuss away the facts in front of them. “I did not do it” is usually not a valid argument acceptable, but when it comes to the Orange cult, is understood that he cannot do anything wrong. Regardless of how many people he defrauded and ripped off for decades and all sorts of other crimes he has been accused off and those he has been actually convicted off.
The sad part is the refusal to see what’s in front of them and the denialism associated with his cult like followers.

Bremmer is a hot mess on Ukraine. First he says the money from the US Congress isn’t coming but then, when he gets to the part about Russia losing, suddenly there is potential for billions to come from the US in 2024. Second, the “winning” path forward for UKR to swallow hard and cede the occupied territories sounds like a Kremlin talking point. It’s appeasement that realists like to dress up as being adults about a far more complex debate and understanding of the two countries and the present-day conflict. Let’s see if the West refocuses on UKR and provides what it needs to win. It’s still too early to throw in the towel.

But setting that aside, there are two combats in this war and Putin has zero intention of backing away from his maximalist aims: to de-Nazify and take ALL of UKR. So even if UKR sued for peace per Bremmer’s plan, there is no guarantee Russia would honour the deal. (Almost assuredly not.) UKR would therefore be left with either giving up the entire country or once again fighting the Russians. Obviously if the former, UKR is doomed. But if the latter, they are back in a hot war which would preclude any membership in the EU or NATO.

Russia must to be defeated now so they can come to the full realization of their mad imperialist ambitions. Any discussion of appeasement is folly.
