Do you feel short on time? Writer and work expert Danielle Roberts would like to help you with that. In this quick talk, she makes the case that free time isn’t a reward you earn but a civil right you’re owed. (Recorded at TED Democracy Philadelphia on June 13, 2026)

We buy in, enable and emulate everything we whine and complain about. Practice independence or lose it. Ever vigilant isn’t a fairy tale. Stand up for yourself, others and your community or get stood on. As Forest Gump’s mom always said, America is as America does. This country is trash because we are

This sounds like someone who hasn’t really thought thru the changes in civilization over the last two centuries.
A right to time? Who’s time do you have a right to? If you are demanding that “society” provide you with stuff so that you don’t have to work, you are literally demanding the right to other people’s time and labor.

@independentfool or alternatively, someone who has.
It was clear from the talk that the time owed is “our own”. The “ask” is not the rewards of someone else’s time, but “our own” – What you fail to recognize is that the owner class has been silently claiming the rewards of civilizational productivity gains over the course of the past century, without passing those gains (or giving back the time) to those who produce.
So if workers do more with less time, why then do companies still claim 40hours per week without commensurate increase in pay, based on cost of living. Why shouldn’t people demand more time (if not more money), when the cost of living is rising at an increasing pace primarily due to the billionaire class and regulatory capture of our political and economic systems?

Idk about your country but false in mine.
Government is liable for securing people a life worth living including safe retirement.. And meaningful life.
Whether they actually do that is another thing as governments hire violent homocidal maniacs, authoritarian power trippers and abusive little hoes to do their bidding just like any other power structure. But law obligates.

All time is yours. The notion that anybody is forcing you to act and have no time to yourself is a lie. So many people are retired or are young and not even looking for work. And we’re all told that companies won’t even give you full-time jobs, or that working 40 hours/week means you have time. Government extorts our labor and property, controls our lives fully, then this silly woman wants more government control to give us time. All while AI and automation is giving ex workers more time than they ever wanted because nobody will pay you more than you are worth, more than the value of your labor to them.

1) The second part of your argument does not follow from the first part of your argument.
2) The government is distal to the employer in determining your personal financial situation.
3) Of course there needs to be a balance, but, you do think that roads, water systems, public education, and law enforcement grow on trees?
The rich already often pay less in taxes than an average citizen – requiring more in taxes from the average citizen to maintain the infrastructure they benefit from.
4) If you say it is not ok for the government to exploit your labor and your property – is that somehow justification for employers to exploit workers time? Since when do two wrongs make a right?

Many citizens of the US proudly believe that their freedom is unsurpassed by any other country. This is a piece of propaganda fed to Americans along with the American dream designed to instil the idea that financial wealth as the very definition of success. Here in the UK along with most of Europe a 37.5 or 40-hour work week is common for most people, we have eight fixed bank holiday days throughout the year alongside four weeks annual leave. A two week break in the summer is often a standard feature of what we call the work/life balance. We have free healthcare at the point of use – paid for by taxation. We may have lower salaries but we have lower personal costs. We have a healthy attitude to firearms – almost no one owns one, but If you want one, you can have one, but most people don’t want one. Here, healthcare is a right and gun ownership is a privilege- in the US it’s the other way around..! In short our society is organised around many more freedoms, a balance of freedoms to do certain things and freedoms from certain dangers. Most people have passports, and have the time to use them to absorb other cultures. Americans need to look at the rest of the world and ask themselves just how free they really are. Are they just hamsters on a treadmill believing themselves to be temporarily embarrassed millionaires…?
