The Real Reasons Permanent Daylight Savings Time Never Stuck
Whether you’re pro-Daylight Savings or pro-Standard Time, the science is clear: Switching *between* the two every year is terrible for human health. So why haven’t we stuck with one system all year? The answer is both scientific AND political. Hosted by Annie Colbert Reported by Tom Hawking Edited by Avital Oehler Written and Produced by…

While I would rather just normal time…(Michigan is already on the far west side of the Eastern Time Zone), Just not changing the clocks 2x a year would be best regardless if it is standard or savings time.

I prefer permanent DST, but I would settle for anything permanent. Just stop the changing.

Our lives are no longer dependent on daylight so daylight savings is asinine. Split the difference and call it good. Or just leave it one way or the other.

In my area, it’s because the federal government hasn’t made it legal.
Washington, Oregon, and California have all passed “permanent DST”, but current federal law forbids that. It only allows “permanent standard time”. (As Arizona has.) As soon as the federal government allows permanent DST, the US West Coast will then stay on DST.

The worst part about dst is living with an insomniac… So now they get up at 6:30 in the morning when its really only 5:30… “But the clock says 6:30…” Ugh.

We need permanent standard time. That’s why it’s standard time. Permanent DST is just switching to a perpetually incorrect time zone.

@TheNaikan The clock isn’t responsible for anything but telling you what time it is. Schedules would be responsible for when someone is eating.

May I thought Permanent DST was a joke. Like flat earthers or anti vaxxers. Just stuff stupid people believe. I hate to break it to the politicians but pretending mid day is a different time doesn’t change reality and has zero benefit to humanity.

It would be great if society could agree to shift the start of school and work, but short of that let’s move to permanent DST already. When we do things is a social construct anyway, I don’t see why early birds (maybe 20% of the population including grade school kids), a significant portion of whom would trade that morning daylight for afternoon daylight anyway, should trump an hour of light in the afternoon when everyone can enjoy it and benefit from the better mood it creates. I’d like to see a more exhaustive review of the literature about the mood boost for the extra hour of light in the afternoon so we can make a more informed decision balancing that against making kids get up earlier

Permanent daylight saving… That seems totally useless. Wouldn’t it be less effort to just shift the time things happen instead of messing with the clocks?
Like people waking up at 7 instead of 8. Stores opening at 8 instead of 9, and so on.

April 29, 2026 at 8:06 pm
DST is just absurd. All it does is force everyone to get up earlier and do everything an hour earlier… The day is not longer, there is no more daylight than is you were on standard time. Here is the best idea. You want to play more after work? Ask the boss to let you shift your work day by an hour.
And for us retired folks we wouldn’t have to change everything just to stay in sync with those that don’t seem to understand time.
@pecansmith
April 29, 2026 at 11:04 pm
You would be surprised how many people have no idea what time is or what clocks are for. Many people think that schedules are fixed and the time is malleable. Now we have a government mandate to wake up earlier imposed on the entire population.

I hate daylight saving with a passion. I don’t care if they keep it on permanently or remove it. It just needs to stop screwing up my already crappy sleep schedule twice a year for no reason.
@pecansmith
April 29, 2026 at 11:15 pm
Science indicates that the only thing worse than changing the clocks twice a year is staying on Daylight Saving Time (DST) year round. In terms of health outcomes, permanent Standard Time is superior to biannual switching or permanent DST. There is a consensus among major health organizations that back up this claim.

trying to use science with the sample size of “me and my cat” is laughable. a normal study should involve tens of millions of people across the globe to breach at least 1%
humans literally just had two sleeps some years ago instead of one, but for a modern human it sounds insane
so did anyone paid for research into humans naturally having two sleeps and modern one long sleep being unnatural abomination of gaslight?

@cggc9510
April 30, 2026 at 7:43 pm
I live and work in three different time zones across three different continents. Every 6 months, I spend 1 month spread across 3-5 time zones as different countries move into and out of daylight savings. Then in my home country, some states change and others don’t. So, I am a mess during those two months as everyone changes.
I hate, no despise, no loathe DST because everyone does it on their own time. Not to mention in one season, I am 14 hours ahead of NYC and in others I am 15 or 16 hours ahead.
Enough with the nonsense. Just get rid of it across the world. We live in a super connected world. We don’t need it any more.

In the 1980s I worked for an organization’s Graphic Arts division. It was in the basement (no windows). In the winter I went to work in the dark and went home in the dark, having never seen the sun. I was a creature of the night! That was a weird time for me.

Interesting about Ohio and Michigan. I was wondering how they went from central time in 1883 to eastern time today. This was their permanent daylight saving time. I support either time being permanent over the stupid switching. But I do like daylight saving time year round better than standard time year round although I do know standard has more health benefits. I think the reason this failed in 1974 was that we sprung forward in January. If we had simply not fallen back in Oct 1973 nobody would have noticed the difference. Also agree if Nixon hadn’t been impeached we would probably be on year round dst to this day and not having this conversation. I hope Congress can push to try this again. If it fails in the 2020s though and becomes unpopular like in the 1970s then permanent standard time all the way. One way or other be rid of the time switch. Maybe year round dst at the eastern ends of time zones to help with winter evenings and year round standard time at the western ends of time zones to help with winter mornings

How about, instead of moving our clocks twice a year, we move the opening hours of every institution and shop twice a year, that is equivalent.
Suddenly it becomes a crazy idea, even though these two things are the same.

Should just do permanent daylight or always hour ahead. You will always have more sun after work/school which means you can go to parks for longer since those tend to close at dusk and more people will be healthier.
