Pirate fishing, oil spills and other undetected crimes are destroying ocean ecosystems — but we can’t stop what we can’t see. Harnessing the power of satellite data and AI to catch maritime offenders in the act, ocean conservation expert and 2023 Audacious Project grantee Tony Long introduces the first-ever live map of all industrial human activity at sea. He shares how his team at Global Fishing Watch is making it freely available to the world so conservationists, researchers and the public can help protect precious aquatic habitats.

This ambitious plan is a part of the Audacious Project, TED’s initiative to inspire and fund global change. Learn more at .

I understand the fisherman in NK are doing illegal fishing. And many of them are starving and dying. But they’re doing it because their people are starving and dying by the millions under a brutal regime. Now that you reduced illegal fishing by 75% all you did was force more people to starve and die to save some fish. I don’t see that as a victory. Sure ecosystems and fisheries are important. But not at the expense of human suffering. All you did was satisfy your perceived morality. And like a typical liberal you did it with a human cost. It made you feel good but did it actually do good?

Dear Honorable Prime Minister, Chief Justice, and Chairman Imran Khan,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I, Rashid Ullah, a 2nd year MBBS student residing in KPK, Lower Dir Munda, am writing to bring your attention to a matter of utmost importance and urgency concerning the well-being and unjust imprisonment of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani national currently serving an 86-year sentence in the United States.

Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a daughter of our beloved nation, was unjustly convicted of attempted murder and other felonies in 2010. However, there is widespread concern and doubt about the fairness of her trial, and **many believe that she is innocent of the charges brought against her**. Her case has garnered significant international attention and has become a symbol of **injustice and human rights violations**.

It is disheartening to learn about Dr. Siddiqui’s **deteriorating health condition**. Reports indicate that she is suffering from various physical and mental health issues, and her situation demands **immediate attention and intervention**. As fellow human beings and citizens of Pakistan, it is our moral duty to stand up for justice and ensure the well-being of our fellow countrymen.

Therefore, I kindly request your **urgent intervention** in this matter. I appeal to the Pakistani government, the honorable Chief Justice, and the esteemed Chairman of PTI to use your influential positions and diplomatic channels to address this issue at the highest levels. I urge you to make every possible effort to **secure the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui from her unjust incarceration in the United States**.

Furthermore, I kindly request your assistance in conveying our concerns and demands to the United States government. It is crucial that we seek the cooperation and support of the American authorities in **facilitating the immediate release of Dr. Siddiqui, considering her declining health and the humanitarian aspect of her case**.

I trust in your commitment to justice, human rights, and the well-being of every Pakistani citizen. Your proactive involvement in this matter can bring hope and relief to Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and her family, and it will serve as a testament to Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to **protecting its citizens’ rights**.

Thank you for your attention to this **urgent matter**. I kindly request a prompt response and action on behalf of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. May justice prevail, and may we stand united in the pursuit of truth and compassion.

    Yours sincerely,

    Rashid Ullah

Seriously? Fucking American military will tell me about bad evil people from poor, oppressed countries by America, who harm nature? Nothing that they just survive in the hellish conditions that you created for them?! He also says that they need data on movements!

    – Yes Yes!

Where there’s a market, our species will always beg, steal, or borrow to fill it. Too little…too late…sport. There is no stopping the human animal. We offer the planet absolutely nothing and demand everything from it. F our species!

I think that priority to the resources should be given to smaller fishermen and those that use it to subsist. And the huge fishing vessels should be the last priority

Agreed. It’s not our place to outlaw lifestyles and traditions that are thousands of years old and all these people know. Their rights to fisheries are above those of the rest of us.

Good thing of illegal fishermen were around North Korea were caught because now they’re just sitting in North Korea starving to death instead of washing up on the shores of Japan. With the way that that country is they were probably fishing so that way they can feed themselves and others and now they just lost a major source of food. Also these gigantic industrial shift can go out there and chest scoop of all kinds of fish and bycatch as well

The irony being is it’s our strict sanctions against them that make them poor and force them into dangerous fishing 😂 but now we police them and tell them can’t do that either so it’s a win.. lol

China doesn’t honor treaties, and you don’t even have the guts to name them as the largest problem when it comes to illegal industrial fishing.

I like the program and concept – but the way North Korea was casually mentioned as the villains – not only don’t they have anyone to defend or speak for them, but also suffering ceiling sanctions by western nations. And when their people fish to make ends meet, that’s the problem? No problems with the huge trawlers devastating fish stocks (after lobbyng to greenlight this)

Seeing the illegal fishing I see two things that may go on (in parallel):
    – reckless people trying to live illegally from endangered goods of nature
    – a potentially unfair distribution of fishing rights pushing poor people into illegal activities to survive or make a living
(ofc. everything in between is also possible)

I would be curious to know more about illegal fishing for this reason.

In order to stop illegal fishing, you have to defeat China and Russia militarily. Never mind, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Paraguay, Panama, Uruguay ….
