GREAT TOPIC. Classical music suffers considerably under current streaming tech. My biggest beef with streaming is the lack of availability of album credits – the entire CD sleeve for that matter.

Definitely needs a separate app for Classical Music. I use Apple Music because I am deep into Apple ecosystem. Apple Music UI has gotten worse over the years. It’s just a mess. The browse music tab is so random on which artists it features. It’s pretty useless to me to find new artists to listen to. Apple has made radio like programming with various hosts and their own style music playlists. The selections are so busy and not intuitive at all. I feel like the radio feature needs a separate app too. Apple Music Radio app. They make it free with ads like a real radio. It’s stuff that I was able to do many years ago on Windows with WinAmp. 😒.

yeah good to mention at the end Apple Pay Later also being delayed…. they’ll get to it. likely these were harder to integrate into existing system than previously anticipated and werent huge priorities due to likely smaller userbases for a stand alone classical music app and yet another payment method/Affirm/Zip competitor. though I do see Venmo making a big payments push now too to rival paypal, we will see if Cash app is next

Great video. IMO Apple’s treatment of jazz music has many of the same problems. Maybe they should roll the jazz library into this hypothetical app too.

Perhaps if you gave smaller companies and indie devs more attention/publicity/advertisements, they could afford NOT to sell to larger companies.

Primephonic was definitely heading in the right direction when Apple pulled it. This is quite a good high level dissection of the problems. Let’s hope it eventually arrives.

Thank you, I do hope Apple develops a good classical streaming app. As you point out, the current streaming services are terrible for classical music. I’m just afraid there won’t be enough money in for Apple to do a decent job.

i still can’t get Apple Music to play Playlists I’ve created with opera tracks. I have to buy Apple Music and then, MAYBE, I might just get to say ‘Play Placido Domingo’. When i ask Siri to play a playlist (on my Homepod Mini) it’s called ‘stump the band’. I get an error message saying that ‘We can’t find that music’. – even though I’ve created a playlist on my Apple Music and have it on my phone.

1 issue that needs work is Mozart composed many works, and just how those specific works are catalogued it a mess right now. Same work with many different “names” attached to it. This presents a problem when searching for the piece you want to listen to, just how and who lists the music as it is listed? Same piece, different ways to list it. 2nd issue, I have multiple recordings of the exact same piece of music by multiple different orchestras and conductors. If you ever make the mistake of allowing Apple Music to search for duplicates, and then allow it to delete the duplicate, you will find huge amounts of music deleted. And this duplicate can even be the same orchestra and the same conductor but recorded live or in a studio. Which one will Apple Music choose, live or studio. I realize that this is a very specific issue that applies to both classical music and opera. There is a music streaming service that will show you all the variations of the same song sung by the same artist when you search. I have 28 GB of classical music on my iPhone. I see these issues all the time.

It’s been almost a year and a half since Apple bought and killed Primephonic, which already worked really well. They could have just rebranded the existing app, but I’ve migrated to IDAGIO and won’t be leaving when/if they actually release this new app. At least until Apple buys and kills IDAGIO, too.

Actually, computers aren’t dumb, the people who created Apple Music, and still insist on calling a 70 minute movement of a Mahler symphony a “song” are dumb. Apple has never had any respect for classical music, I don’t expect it will get any better. Apple bought Primephonic to shut it down somApple could continue to pretend to care about classical.

This is so typical of big tech—They acquire a competing platform, shut it down (leaving existing users hanging instead of integrating it into their ecosystem), and ruin the market for entrepreneurs and consumers alike. Let’s hope it’s not too expensive whenever they decide to release it.
