“When teachers and families work together, everyone wins,” says education technology entrepreneur and TED Fellow Heejae Lim. She shines a light on an underutilized resource in US public education — a family’s love for their children — and shows that, with the right tools and tech, schools can remove language barriers, foster meaningful connections and help every student thrive.

Whilst this tool it is helpful, surely the best solution would be for the parents to be forced to learn the language of the country they’ve moved to. For anybody to move to another country and deliberately not learn the language or their customs is deliberately putting themselves and their families at a disadvantage as you have just explained.
Stephen Catton
September 6, 2022 at 4:03 pm
@Emmanuel Charlot No they don’t have to go to school, although they could if they are able, there are plenty of online solutions available. We have the supporting infrastructure but it is no good if the immigrants don’t take advantage of it… which many of them don’t due to a variety of reasons.
You know nothing about my me or my parents and our privileges and I don’t really understand what they have to do with my comment. Perhaps your comment betrays your biases.

Its REALLY hard to learn a new language after the age of 25 or 30. I speak 4 languages but 3 are easy cos I learnt them as a kid & one is REALLLY difficult if I get “rusty” ‐ I learnt it at 22.
Some people aren’t good at languages.
Since the USA doesn’t have an official language, I’m often confused as to why people believe everyone needs to speak English.
I’m Canadian & there ARE 2 official languages (EN & FR) yet the vast majority of our public buildings have at least 30 or more translations on signage & they employ linguists to work with immigrants.
ESL classes are offered for free for students & families too (at most larger schools).
Sometimes its hard to learn stuff, but when one moves somewhere, there’s a way to get by & most people eventually pick up enough of the most common language(s) to get by.
Just my thoughts as the daughter of Canadian immigrants.

While I share your general idea of “people moving to a different country should learn the language”, I also see a few struggles. Refugees for example may have zero preparation time, but their kids should go to schools as soon as possible. Bridging that gap can be crucial. Especially as learning a new language does not come easy to everyone and the new language may be completely different to their own. It simply takes “too much time” to do things by their numbers. There are quite likely also major cultural differences to overcome (and organizational obstacles like “what do I need to do to even get my kid into a school” etc.). There really is a lot to learn. If the moving happens… let’s call it “under controlled circumstances” then I’m all with you. Prepare properly, then go for it. Unfortunately that doesn’t count for everyone. The cool thing I see in this program is that it encourages communication, and although it doesn’t help directly with the language, the higher degree of integration that it brings with it may curate a motivation to improve that integration more and more. It’s that starting point, the first hurdle taken. And it definitely seems to benefit the kids, who hardly ever have a say in where to be.

@Vanessa Raeder I didn’t say that what she had done is a bad thing. It is just that the main focus should be on the parents learning the language. It is not possible to make something suitable for everyone. The speaker points to a group of parents who hadn’t learned English, despite being in the country for years, compared to her mother who had learned the language and cited as a reason for her success and this is my point.
I have experience working with people who migrate to England and don’t learn the language, even to speak it, and the problems they then have to overcome. I remember one complaining, despite the number of years they had been in the UK, about the lack of printed information in their language and then when questioned about what they would do, said that they’d have to learn English…

I came to the US when I was 13 and the school system pushed me back 2 classes. It depends where you are in the US. we end up in the hood because we find someone we knew back home. it was the 90s so we didn’t have the advantages kids has now but i still manage to go to college and got 2 degrees. My parents had to learn English to get jobs; yes, i agreed we do need to learn the language if we live here.

Learning a new language isn’t easy and it take time specially depending on resources and supports to keep you learning new phrases, words and conversations. Moving also isn’t a easy task. Don’t be hard on your individual situation. You still pulled through and made it. Not everyone is that fortunate. Even people who lived there their whole lives sometimes have a hard time accomplishing as much do to family structure, support, resources, finances, and traumatic events of their environments. You fought through the odds and adversities, made it out and you did well. Many blessings and congratulations as well!👩🏽🎓👏🏽🎉🏆💐💜

@Trieviette78 I think learning a new language deserve that time
Specially when it come to English
It’s an international language and we all need it every single day in our life
Am from Egypt which is a country that no one has to speak English at all and it was so hard to find someone who can practice the language here
But when I started to learn English three years ago
Now Am telling you it deserve time and power and everything .
Me after learning the language is so different and better than now
It’s fact that learning a new language is very enjoyable and also a long beautiful journey

Now THIS is a TED talk. Thank you for your insights and the solutions you brought up! I hope it functions as a hurdle-breaker and the intitial step of integration, that first nudge, hopefully leads to many more and nurtures a higher degree of integration over time! If one hurdle is gone, it makes it easier to use the momentum and learn the language over time.

People just know how to bash and complain. Even now, this girl has the courage and strength to go on a global stage with such a crucial issue, and I still see comments about how useless this idea is. Well, I don’t see you coming up with anything. Even if it is a very rudimentary idea, this girl actually did something. Maybe she even inspired someone out there to take her idea and make it into something better. That’s how innovation, invention, and reform works: evolution. And what did you do? Nothing.

So, the Most Powerful Yet Overlooked Resource in Schools is parents’ love for their children, because when teachers and families work together, everyone wins.
This only works when teachers and parents are willing to help one another.
What if you live in a society where teachers and parents are always ready to fight about anything concerning the children. Oh well.
Btw the technology which can break down the language barrier between teachers and immigrant parents sounds very useful.

I strongly agree with his opinion, that everyone has the right to get a proper education from both the family and the less fortunate, and of course in terms of family education it is also very influential because time with family is more than time at school, so the education of parents will determine the child. what will be like, when the child is educated to be a good person then a good child is formed, and vice versa. Therefore, families and educational institutions must be able to work together in terms of providing decent and quality education

I agree with the phrase “when teacher and family work together, everyone wins”. Because, I experienced when I was in junior high school, where I was close to the teacher and my parents were also close to the teacher. It makes me more comfortable in the learning process because I feel cared for more by my teacher.

After I watched Ted Talk this time with the title “The Most Powerful Yet Overlooked Resource in Schools”, I very very agree with the statement she said that When teachers and families work together, everyone wins. Because I feel that it is very useful for everyone including me. For example, I have learned about speaking in English at school, when I am at home everything I have learned at school I repeat with my family, especially my parents. This is a small thing, but if done it will be very beneficial and if ignored will be very detrimental.

I agree with the phrase “when school and family work together, everyone wins.” Yes, that’s right. When students are supported and families are empowered, the teacher’s job becomes easier. So it will be more profitable for the system if the family and school are correlated because the school and community environment develops from people with various backgrounds. GREAT SPEAKER!!

After power watching the video entitled ” The most powerful Yet Overlooked Resource in Schools”. I agree with the word “When teacher and family work together, everyone wins.” because the cooperation of teachers and families is crucial to the success of students. Through this collaboration, teachers and students’ families help each other and mutual understanding between teachers and students’ families for the benefit of students, where each has such an influence, mutual understanding and mutual assistance is realized between the two to improve student achievement.

In my opinion, what is said is very true. because the influence of technology in every school greatly affects the performance and development of everyone. but that’s what I think is the most important, yet every school ignores it. So technology affects everyone’s development.

I have two nephews and my sister is on two Whatsap schools groups because of it and she absolutelly hates it. The teacher/school memos are ok and necessary, but them she has to content with all the other parents question, comments and even bantering… This is not a good solution, in her opinion.
