One of the biggest Cognitive Biases we all suffer from is Negativity Bias. Basically every creature with a nervous system has evolved to respond more strongly to negative stimuli than positive stimuli. Our media and social media work off this – “if it bleeds it leads”. The algorithms know this – it’s called engagement by enragement.

I couldn’t be more desperate. I’m a disabled entrepreneur trying to start my own tech media company and restaurant, but I’ve received zero help from anyone. I’ve tried everything. Literally everything. The lack of adequate help is crushing me. Where is my good news? I’m drowning in an ocean of “I don’t know,” where is my good news? Where are the people who would care about me and actually help me because they’re qualified and know what “help” means? Should it be this difficult? Is the entire PNW really this ill-equipped to help one disabled entrepreneur?

Once upon a time, in the whimsical and wondrous land of Technotopia, there lived a visionary named Naked. Naked was not just an ordinary visionary; they were a nudist, atheist, nonconformist, futurist artist with a burning desire to create a tech media company and a restaurant planetarium observatory. Naked had survived a decade of homelessness, a global pandemic, and the notorious Trump presidency, but the greatest challenge they faced was the utter lack of adequate help.

One day, as Naked sat in their living room, a shimmering portal opened up. Out stepped Glorp, an eccentric and overly enthusiastic cosmic janitor with a penchant for wearing mismatched socks and a top hat that occasionally dispensed confetti. “Greetings, Naked! I have been sent by the Galactic Council of Misunderstood Geniuses to help you!”

Naked, both bewildered and hopeful, asked, “Where is my good news? I’m drowning in an ocean of ‘I don’t know.’ Where are the people who would actually help me because they’re qualified and know what ‘help’ means?”

Glorp chuckled and said, “Fear not, for I bring you the most ridiculous, absurd, and hilarious solutions! But first, we must embark on a quest to the far reaches of the Bizarre Bazaar, where we’ll find the ingredients for success!”

Their journey began in the Wobbly Woods, where they encountered a band of rogue algorithms that had escaped from a faulty server. These algorithms, named Bit, Byte, and Bug, spoke in riddles and demanded answers to puzzles before they would grant passage.

“Answer me this,” Bit buzzed, “What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?”

Naked replied, “A human! Crawling as a baby, walking as an adult, and using a cane in old age.”

“Correct!” Byte exclaimed, “Now solve this: I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?”

Naked thought for a moment and answered, “An echo!”

“Well done!” Bug chirped, “Now for the final riddle: The more you take, the more you leave behind. What am I?”

    Naked smiled and said, “Footsteps.”

The algorithms cheered and allowed them to pass. They then traveled to the Mountain of Misfit Tech, where they met the whimsical inventor, Dr. Whizbang. Dr. Whizbang was a mad scientist with a heart of gold, who spoke in quirky innuendos and trivia. He had a pet robot named Gizmo, who was programmed to tell jokes every five minutes.

Dr. Whizbang greeted them with a hearty laugh, “Ah, Naked! Did you know that the shortest war in history was between Britain and Zanzibar on August 27, 1896? It lasted between 38 and 45 minutes!”

Gizmo added, “Why did the scarecrow become a successful entrepreneur? Because he was outstanding in his field!”

Naked couldn’t help but chuckle. They explained their plight to Dr. Whizbang, who immediately began concocting a plan. “We need a blend of futuristic tech, a sprinkle of culinary magic, and a dash of community spirit. But first, we must gather the rare and elusive Turquoise Dreamer Mushrooms from the Enchanted Forest of Farce.”

As they ventured into the forest, they encountered the Guardian of the Mushrooms, a wise old turtle named Turtlington. Turtlington loved quizzes and riddles and insisted they solve his favorite quiz before granting them the mushrooms.

“First question,” Turtlington began, “What is the only food that never spoils?”

    Naked answered, “Honey.”

“Correct! Next, what planet is known as the Red Planet?”

“That would be Mars,” Naked replied.

“Excellent! Final question: What element does ‘O’ represent on the periodic table?”

    “Oxygen,” Naked said confidently.

Turtlington beamed, “You’ve done well! Here are the Turquoise Dreamer Mushrooms. Use them wisely.”

Armed with the mushrooms, they returned to Dr. Whizbang’s lab, where they combined the ingredients in a whirlwind of technicolor smoke and flashing lights. With a triumphant “Eureka!” Dr. Whizbang presented Naked with the Ultimate Startup Kit, capable of launching their tech media company and restaurant with ease.

As Naked prepared to leave, Glorp handed them a mysterious amulet. “This amulet will summon the Help Squad, a group of altruists, philanthropists, and investors, whenever you need them. Simply whisper your desires, and they shall appear.”

With newfound hope and the Ultimate Startup Kit in hand, Naked returned to their world. They whispered to the amulet, and within moments, the Help Squad materialized, ready to offer support, resources, and connections. Naked’s dream was finally within reach, and they couldn’t help but feel a surge of optimism.

In the end, Naked’s journey through the whimsical world of Technotopia taught them that even in the most desperate times, there is always a glimmer of hope, a spark of absurdity, and a band of quirky characters ready to lend a hand.

And so, dear reader, remember that sometimes, the most outlandish and unorthodox solutions are the ones that bring us closer to our dreams. Keep believing, keep dreaming, and never lose your sense of humor, for you never know when a cosmic janitor with mismatched socks might appear to save the day.

    May 24, 2024 at 3:54 pm

Angus, thank you for your talk on good news/things to be thankful for. I do appreciate it. However, I am trying to understand the facts. You state that carbon emissions in some countries have dropped to the same rate as they were 50 years ago. When I look at atmospheric carbon dioxide on the keeling curve, in 1975 the data tells us there was about 330 ppm. Now we are at about 424 ppm. last year we passed 1.5°C temperature rise when compared to preindustrial baseline for the average world temperature. If you look at the data that’s coming out in peer reviewed papers, the analysis is pretty clear that we’re heading towards at least 3°C warming in the 2050s.
Again, we need to look at the bright side of things, and I really do appreciate you pointing them out. However, I think your information on carbon emissions is misleading and could cause people to think everything is headed in the right direction when it most definitely is not.

I think it would be helpful to your audience if you could post links to your references in the show notes. That way we could look things up for ourselves and gain a greater understanding.

    Thank you very much,

    • @307alexk

      May 27, 2024 at 10:42 am

It’s definitely misleading, but most of the dire consequences and temperature rise can start to be ruled out based on the trajectory that the world is on. Yes, the Keeling curve keeps rising, but if you asked the IEA what emissions would look like 25 years ago, I don’t think they would have predicted falling emissions in Western countries, and peaking emissions in China. I challenge your view that everything isn’t heading in the right direction – we may not be moving as quick as you think we should be, but the trends are indeed moving in the right direction.

We’re not on track for 3C by 2050… if you believe the IPCC and the trajectory that we’re currently on, the consensus is that we’re on track for 2-3C by 2100 (with about half of the warming already taking place).

    • @solarwind907

      May 27, 2024 at 2:26 pm

@@307alexk I don’t believe the IPCC. They’re overly optimistic. Have you considered what happens when the methane and CO2 releases from melting permafrost go into feedback loop mode? When that happens even if we were to burn zero fossil fuels the earth will still be emitting them. Same with arctic and antarctic sea ice extent. At some point the feedback loops just take off and good luck stopping them.
Marine Cloud Brightening, if employed ASAP and massively can help us with increasing the albedo of the atmosphere over the oceans. Massive installation of wind and solar can help us slow the rise of the keeling curve. We can solve this problem but we’re not.
So I’m not sure what trends you’re talking about.
To me it’s like there’s a maniac starting houses on fire. The good news is he’s slowing down. the bad news is now the on-fire houses are starting to catch other houses on fire. When the maniac runs out of matches, will the house fires reach critical mass when they just continue lighting new fires on their own? And be unstoppable? That’s where we’re headed.

    • @solarwind907

      May 27, 2024 at 3:50 pm

@@307alexk if you look at the data, you’ll realize that the IPcc conclusions are optimistic fairytales.
As the permafrost melts, methane, and carbon dioxide are emitted into the atmosphere without help from the burning of fossil fuels. We’re close to a positive feedback loop. Period.
Same thing with the ice extent near the poles. As the ice melts and the albedo decreases the blue oceans soak up more solar radiation. At some point soon, another positive feedback loop.
Appreciate your thoughtful comment. Wish I was wrong.
Massive installation of solar and wind power plus ” marine cloud brightening” Technology could save us. We’ll see what happens.

    • @solarwind907

      May 28, 2024 at 10:54 am

      @@307alexk Alex, here’s what I’m thinking.
As permafrost melts CO2 and methane are released into the atmosphere. At some point in the not too distant future this becomes a positive feedback loop. More ghg’s inthe atmosphere, earth gets warmer, more permafrost melts, more ghg’s released etc.
Another positive feedback loop, more ice melts in the ocean, less albedo so less of the suns energy reflected back to space, more absorbed by the dark oceans, earth gets warmer, etc. etc.
ghg’s and sea ice extent have all been measured. This isn’t a model based on a model. This is happening.
So the trajectory is more warming every day. That’s the truth. Unless you have info I do not?
