The world needs clean power, but decarbonization calls for a massive increase in the mining and extraction of minerals like lithium, graphite and cobalt. Environmental peacemaking expert Olivia Lazard sheds light on the scramble for these precious mineral resources — and how the countries that control their supply chains (including China and Russia) could find themselves at the center of the new global stage. Learn why Lazard thinks planetary security depends on our ability to de-escalate resource competition and avoid the same mistakes that led to the climate crisis.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

Some of the concrns are invalid

Rare Earths are not that rare, only currently there is not much mining capacity built out for them. True, that those build-outs should have started already.

Lithium-ion batteries will not be the main driver of the grid transformation. Natrium-ion batteries will be and those are not supply chain limited at all.

Cobalt is being driven out of modern, high-energy lithium ion battery chemistries. Low-energy li-ion chemistries dont use cobalt even today. LFP

@LTVoyager Have you ever tried to ride a bike up Riley street in Folsom CA? When I was 20, and weighed 60lbs less, I rode up it once without stopping for a break as I usually had to do. It was late at night, relatively cool, and I was on acid. There is no way I can do that today. Even with the acid.

Mining the earth for resources…. makes $ense….
I consider earth the heart, and kinda wonder why a heart would need to be mined…?

As if we have 0 other options…. Maybe come up with something New.
Has mining not already been done?…. is this mining going to help the animals also?

    What about the tree’s etc?….

Ever think that somethings might need to stay in the ground.
Let’s just mine the earths core also, as if the core does not play a huge role in the Earth.

Also would you not think that moving what makes up earth by mining etc would not change how
the earth itself works. Remove all the copper from Earth and what may happen?..
Move all the copper etc from the ground to the surface… would you not assume this
to ruin the poles of the Earth or at least something not to great…?

Nvm Me It makes $ense to Mine so lets kill our oxygen, I mean burn some tree’s, I mean plant some trees, but
    only if we can profit.

Climate has always changed but somehow along the way we got hoodwinked into believing carbon is toxic,it is not it is the most essential building block of all life on earth. If you want to talk about pollution coming out of smokestacks and tailpipes that can be filtered better but CO2 is plant food all plants and trees take it in for growth and give us oxygen in return. The higher the CO2 the healthier the plant. Nurseries supplement CO2 up to 2500 ppm so I wouldn’t worry to much about 450ppm. And we always forget about ever evolving technology to counteract our imagined problems of today.

Amen! This is happening not far from where I live. They’ve started mining for Li under the only lake where I live and one in thousands in miles. And companies are doing so for electronic car batteries. We’re destroying the environment in attempt to save it. Should the lake run dry from global warming or collapse from Lithium mining? It’s a controversy in my town.

They aren’t an answer all on their own, but they’re part of any solution. They’re usually very good at minimizing the need for resources that are scarce, environmentally problematic, or dangerous. For example, batteries that don’t need lithium or cobalt are well under way.

“Growth” & “green future” are words that do not go together. Redistribution of wealth is the answere. Mother Earth has enough resourses for us all if we share her gifts. Btw, among these minerals some of them are extremely toxic to us, like lithium, lead, copper & bromide. We need to understand that there are no “free” or “unharmful” solutions. Great speech! Thank you!

Blind spots? Anyone who has been paying attention is well aware of all of these. Does the average person really need a remedial primer on the geopolitical consequences of sudden demand for scarce natural resources? Probably.

  32. Walden Li

    August 20, 2022 at 9:50 am

A talk about geopolitical paranoia, for keeping America in power, as if America has been helping other disadvantaged countries, or China has been destroying them. Quite the opposite, if you care to look: China has helped many to build their infrastructure, while America has destroyed quite a few. One country has a non-interference foreign policy, while the other spends more than half of its budget in the military (and nothing on education).

1-More Batteries does not mean de carbonization 2-Decarbonization does mean climate stabilization due to time horizon and the “global dimming effect” 3-More of the same “global” supply chain order only means intercontinental transfer of goods carried by huge ocean going containers which burn fossil fuel for the foreseeable future. 4-Unilateral interpretation of the ongoing war in Europe (based on the premise of Russia wanting to dominate resource extraction) means more of the same; selling arms to one party and no peace in sight 5-No peace in sight, means deindustrialization of Western Europe in no time, we see the first signs as coal is back and they need to invest even more in defense rather than the Green stuff.

So yeah there are a few blind spots.

The tragedy is we are given no choice in available technologies. Li ion battery electric cars will have almost no impact on climate. There are currently 1.4 billion fossil fueled vehicles in the world which will grow to 2 billion by 2035. If we were really interested in solving the climate problem we would: 1) Make vehicles which last pretty much forever; and 2) use non polluting synthetic fuels like DME/ammonia, methanol/ammonia, ammonia. Existing engines (25% efficient) readily burn synthetic fuel blends like diesel/methanol/ammonia and can be modified to use more environmentally friendly fuels like DME/ammonia. There are follow on technologies like ammonia fuel cells (60% efficient) and opposed piston engine (50% efficient) which we can introduce almost immediately. We’ve known how to make and use synthetic fuels for over 100 years. Designing vehicles which are easily maintained and can last pretty much forever is not hard. America is just pretty much bad at designing the necessary improvements.

Assumes that she understands the details, proposes solutions which are more of a vision but abstracts the actual complications of our legal systems and the reality and self-interest of everyone. Overall it’s more of a wishful thinking than a really meaningful discussion of the problem of climate change and its solution. Also, banking on renewable energy is not even a good strategical solution to the energy problem. Any energy policy strategy excluding a massive up-build in nuclear energy is likely to fail miserably in my opinion.

This gave me a good laugh. So the only thing we need to do in order to save the planet and have global peace is to form a kind of world government which controls all resources and production? This means that countries have to give up their sovereignty and share what they have: resources, technology, knowledge, manpower. Good luck with that! Not even in the EU are we able to do that. Countries like Russia and China will never cooperate (except with each other – to a degree). Sad to say, but mankind is a lost tribe.

a regime doesn’t just mean a government or state. A regime also means “a system or ordered way of doing things.”. So we don’t need a global authority, but we need to have global treaties that take the shown consequences into consideration when extracting resources.

Yeah. . . TED, or quasi intellectualism. (TED actually stands for try education, duh!) The elite’s DECLARING the way THEY can keep their MONEY STREAMS going through their elitist BS brain washing programs. (i.e. Agenda 21/30 where the crappists get to own it all) How is the Great Re-Set going, you greedy evil uber-shites? We need Klaus Schwab & Bill Gates & Noah Harari like we need a friggin hole in our head, you sickening immoral douchebags!

This is a absolutly fantastic talk and makes you aware that green energy is not green.
I really like that she comes up with solutions. In my eyes they are to complex and not profit related so they wont be a mass solutions = no solutions.

Green energy just shifts the moneymaking from one thing (oil, gas…) to another with the same or even worse outcome for our environment/nature.

The only solutions in my eyes will never happen because they are no moneymakers and not attractive in a consum-orientated world.

Means: there is no solution. Pessimistic about this subject? Yes.

The devil is always in the unintended consequences and each generation’s arrogant belief that their “solutions” won’t have any.

A very good talk, thank you.
However, it seems to me, that something very important was missing from decarbonization plans: sink carbon in soils and vegetation. Which will be possible (yes, it is proven by research and practice) by sustainable agriculture and reforestation with diverse selection of local trees and re-greening badly degraded areas.

There seems to be a simpler more achievable solution; massive investment in nuclear power especially in europe
