The creators of the game and the show were inspired by zombie carpenter ants. WIRED spoke with Dr. Charissa de Bekker to talk about the real fungus that inspired the show’s infected, and how the show’s zombies parallel these real-life ants.

The only problem is that out body temperature is what keeps us immune against fungi.

this fungi has a mutation that allows it to withstand the heat

    • Trerro

      January 13, 2023 at 11:47 pm

Average human body temperature has been slowly declining, and many types of fungi are evolving to withstand higher levels of heat – both of these are likely symptoms of climate change. Also, human fungal infections aren’t nearly as rare as you may think. There’s a likely 50:50 chance you’ll have athlete’s foot at some point in your life (which is fungal), yeast infections aren’t exactly rare, and a highly drug-resistant fungus is currently killing a whole bunch of people in hospital wards.

In the game about 60% are infected 40% have survived. Not exactly on the brink of extinction

    • Paul Johnson

      January 13, 2023 at 11:24 pm

It’s called the last of us, not the minority of us. The note that said 60% in the game was written one year after global infection. The overall statistics can’t be recorded once the collapse of civilisation took hold but I’ve heard by the time last of us 1 takes place 20 years later it’s about 90% of the population dead or infected.

    • Spooky

      January 13, 2023 at 11:08 pm

@Keizer Hedorah They’re so different, the zombies are the most important part in the TWD but in the last of us it’s the characters that matter. Also the last of us has better story than 90% of movies and shows, and far surpasses TWD which only has one good season.

I’ve seen a theory that at first stages like runners, the human part is till alive but they can’t control anything and that’s why they scream more human like, it is the person inside screaming. After the stalker the human part dies. The fact that you are still alive and can’t do anything it’s terrifying

    • Bryce Poo

      January 15, 2023 at 11:13 pm

@Controlman I think my argument has had a lot more evidence to back up than yours tbh your only evidence is it’s not confirmed and you don’t know why they show human emotions so you discard it

    • Bryce Poo

      January 15, 2023 at 11:14 pm

@Controlman you need things confirmed rather than putting together the pieces

    • Bryce Poo

      January 15, 2023 at 11:19 pm

@Controlman “I contradicted myself saying I didn’t want to argue now I do mf hop off my meat, why do the runner cry and sob if they’re just mindless husks” that’s crazy I totally didn’t answer your question

    • Bryce Poo

      January 15, 2023 at 11:23 pm

@Controlman you’re wrong until you explain why they have human emotions if there isn’t any humanity left in them you’re still gonna find some dumbass way to say you’re right and you’re just gonna continue to say the same thing that it hasn’t been confirmed

    • Controlman

      January 15, 2023 at 11:25 pm

@Bryce Poo I provided tons of evidence, but you also ignored it. You also ignored my prior question. Also, we still need confirmation and that’s exactly why I’m right and you’re wrong. I know you got butthurt that I said you’re wrong, which is why you’re arguing now, but you’ll have to eventually take your L respectfully. Evidence isn’t proof. Also, posting multiple comments doesn’t help your argument. It makes you look desperate and crazy. Like bro, you literally spam 3-4 comments within the same time frame. Learn to calm down little one.

Thanks. This is important knowledge to have, personally and as a society. What I find interesting and revealing is that facts such as that climate change will make these fungi better at infecting humans is silently accepted by the larger audience. Barely anyone mentions this in this very comment section, people rather want to talk about the fictional show than the sad reality.

Basically it’s a zombie apocalypse – they act like zombies, but they aren’t. In most franchises and movies zombies are shown as living dead – which for whatever reason in some way nevertheless act like being alive. The reason for this may be different – a virus, a curse, or witchcraft…

In any case they are obviously dead, because in most depictions of zombies a necrotic decay is shown also different stages of increasing decay, up to partially or completely skeletonized individuals.

In The Last Of Us franchise they speak of infected instead of zombies – the Cordyceps infection obviously doesn’t kill the infected person, because like any parasite, this fungus tries to keep its host alive as long as possible. They are apparently not only alive, but – at least this is suggested – partially aware of their desperate situation. At least in early stages of this Cordyceps infection. In the game, you often encounter so-called „Runners“ – an early stage of infection – standing or walking around whining or making desperate cries of lamentation. In later stages of the infection, the infected seem to lose these last vestiges of humanity as they become completely controlled by the Cordyceps.

Nevertheless, even at this stage they are medically alive. Only in the final stage of this development, people die – you will find them in the game then in some corners and almost completely overgrown by fungi.

I think the answear to why there are so little humans in tlou isn’t because the fungus are (directly) killing its hosts, it’s because humans are killing the parasite, consequently killing the hosts. The fungus are smart enough to infect other humans when controlling the human but hey’re not smart enough to know when to run away or to how to use complex techniques like stealth and weapons, only knowing how catch a prey/possible host, gathering other parasites and roughly communicating

  86. NightmarePhantom

    January 17, 2023 at 5:05 pm

Not sorry to say but people who study this need to stop messing with this stuff.
Ever since the last of us I learned of the inspiration and seeing what it can do to mankind…seriously has scared me to death because there is a possibility this fungus can mutate one day and could be a reality. Plus with the last of us part 2 there are 5 stages technically with the rat king mutation the original host

  87. Kazekame3

    January 17, 2023 at 6:09 pm

Wasn’t the same concept in world war Z I maybe mistaken but wasn’t it cause by some form of fungus. Also in the girl with all the gifts. There were spores involved as well.

  88. Snake Shadows

    January 17, 2023 at 6:43 pm

With the last part of the video, the Doctor basically explained that the fungus wouldn’t wipe us out. Because if it did, how would the fungus survive without its human hosts? The game and the show make this strand of cordyceps sound like an invasive species. One that consumes every human it comes into contact with. In that regard, the cordyceps could and would wipe out humanity without the thought of saving some for later.

If the world got warmer wouldn’t our body temperature also get warmer so the fungi wouldn’t be able to adapt to our bodies even if it was able to adapt to warmer temperatures.

“It can infect humans too” – OH NOOOOOOO!!!

“Actually, human extinction is not likely” – ok, that is better…

“Fungus wouldn’t wipe out its potential hosts” – ok, that doesn’t make me feel any better, wtf?

I hope this is the start of faithful game to movie/show adaptions. It was really well done so far and there are so many stories in gaming that should be experienced by non-gamers.

Personally I find it works better in episode format.

There was an actual case in France in 1951. A crop got infected by a fungus called Claviceps purpura. The crop was made into flour, which in turn was made into pastries. It is estimated that 250 people were infected, 50 were sent to insane asylums, and 7 died. An 11 year old boy attacked his mother in a fit of rage and tried to stringle here. Combine with the Cordyceps, and you have a baseline for the zombies in the game and show.

anyone with a garden will recognize the fungus flies that start gluing themselves to higher-up leaves. these dying flies grow into the leaves and produce mating pheromones that attract suitors to attempt to mate with the infected body, then fly off to spread it to future partners. not nearly as exotic as it might seem.

They said movies get zombies wrong but no they dont. There’s a dofference bwtn fungal infection and a viral one that attacks the nervous core. Plus once dead the reanimation is due to the body cells bein recharged by the viral toxin.
