The idea that one will often think “I forgot to charge the car and I’m getting into the shower, good thing I’ll add 50 miles of range before I leave” is pretty silly. In any EV, you can see how many miles of range you had left when I got out the evening before, and since it takes all of 10 seconds (if that) to plug it in for overnight charging, you not going to forget to charge it (at least not more than once or twice).

I expect I will get some pushback on this but the cybertruck has some great potential as an electric tow vehicle. More rigidity than any other pickup. Also some neat 4 wheel steering things that can make towing safer. Just need to cram enough batteries in it to get a useful towing range. We will have to leave importance up to sales figures.

Ultium pouch batteries cost more to manufacture and are inferior to TESLA’s 4680 batteries which have more power and range.

I’ll be excited about these cars when they are being manufactured at scale and are readily available so greedy dealers can’t slap on an extra $10k to $40k simply because they can.

By the way, Brian isn’t sure the Cybertruck has mass-market appeal – but somebody ought to tell him Tesla already has over a million orders for it. Two years from now, you’re going to see them _everywhere._

1:11 “They use pouch cells” Actually like everyone else except Tesla. Most manufacturers use pouch and not cylindrical. Yeah I know the super rare Lucid has cylindrical and so does the Rivian and maybe the BMW might switch. But Ford, GM, KIA, Hyundai, Porsche, Mini, Nissan, Fiat, Renault, VW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, Peugeot, Jaguar, Polestar, MG, Smart… All use pouch.

11:59 Lexus has a full electric in Europe for a number of years, the UX 300e. A pretty ho-hum slow, slow charging, inefficient EV with about 120 mile range. The Fast charging is at 48 miles added per 30 minutes of charging.

  41. Jeff P

    October 9, 2022 at 7:00 pm

A solar electric vehicle (SEV) called Aptera will being shipping in 2023, but somehow didn’t make the list. Aptera can be configured for 250, 400, 600, or 1000 mile range, beating virtually all of the cars mentioned in this video. Aptera has embedded solar cells that can collect up to 40 miles of free range per day, which none of these cars can do. The Aptera could turn out to be a complete game changer in the EV market, and yet you missed it.

  42. Joshua Wallis

    October 9, 2022 at 8:52 pm

At 2:16 he mentions the Equinox getting 51 miles per hour of charging at home. I think there is an important caveat to this. Most level 2 chargers cannot charge at this rate. Most at home level 2 chargers will probably max at 9.6kw if charge (40 ams * 240) which is probably around 29 miles an hour as you’ll probably get around 3 miles per kWh.

I reeaaaaaaly like how well this guy speaks. Yet, he shoud own an EV, it would make him a better commentator.

@CNET, get this man an affordable everyman sort of EV. I think a Bolt EUV would be perfect.

You people need to get busy and start buying these new cars. The EV I got second hand 4 years ago for cheap is great but I will want to get a newer used EV in a few years. Please don’t buy the stupid cyber truck. Only a 7 year old would want to buy one of those second hand.

The Equinox will never see the light of day for $30K. At that price it’s undercutting the Bolt EUV a smaller vehicle. I think it’ll start closer to $40K.

Aptera. That’s THE best new EV to date. HUGE miss which calls your observational skills into question. You also need to pay more attention overall and get out of your small world of white privilege & classism.

When the median household income is 52k, all electric vehicles are still out of reach for most Americans. In addition, the idea that electric vehicles are more environmentally friendly than ICE cars is simply laughable. Just look at the mining that is required to obtain the materials needed to produce the batteries.

  54. Adam Ryding

  56. Roger Huston

    October 10, 2022 at 6:52 pm

Why do all these cars have an engine compartment? With an electric, that is all wasted space. If you move the passenger compartment forward you gain a more room in the back. May not look like a car, but I would rather have something looking like an old VW Bus and have more useable space. Fuction over form.

  57. Matt Branham

    October 10, 2022 at 7:00 pm

You showed footage of the gas-powered GV70. Also, the GV60 is electric, not an “electrified” petrol chassis.

  58. Get Real

    October 10, 2022 at 7:03 pm

Correction to your video. Everyone is NOT in the same place when it comes to range. Tesla leads here. 330 miles for Model Y and 358 miles for Model 3.

  59. Tony L

    October 10, 2022 at 7:03 pm

You can tell his guy doesn’t own an EV. Car brands can release whatever cars they want. If you can’t charge it, people wont buy it. I’m not talking daily driving charging. I’m talking road trips. People who own non-Tesla EV’s suffer from both range anxiety and charging anxiety. These third party charging stations never work.

I just want to know if and when sodium-ion batteries for EVs will come out. Cheaper raw materials to build a batter that may last longer, but may also have a smaller energy density. Of course until we actually see them on the market then they are just vaporware.

The Cybertruck has enough market appeal, it has more than 1.5M preorder dated back in 2020. By today estimates it could be in between 2M to 3M people waiting for their truck.

Great video. You make an important point: being able to add 55 miles in a single hour of home charging will be more important to consumers than the length of time it takes to fully charge. I need to remember this fact next time someone criticizes my EV: “Yeah, but for a short trip, I’d rather just top-up at home while I’m getting ready to roll, rather than have to stop for gas on the way”.
