buying a $400 dash cam is just gonna make the thief break in just to steal that $400 camera lol.
Unless u grab it with you every time you exit the car.
Also can’t u just use your 5K gopro at that point? Or a 4K 360 degree camera.

Be careful, I bought my wife the $400 nextbase in Decembrr, put in a samsung u3 128gb card. It recorded until February and then continued to show the red recording icon but actually stopped recording! She was hit in July and it was a worthless $650 wasted! Investment ( $400 cam, $100 rear cam, $30 install kit and $130 for best huy install).

In tne end I found out Nextbase wants you to format the card monthly, something she did not do.

Thx, that’s why I find most of the CNET reviews worthless. They don’t drill down at all. They actually mislead people into buying stuff that doesn’t work or they don’t want.

My tip, keep audio recording on and if something happens read the licence plate out loud. That way if the dam doesn’t capture a erasable plate you are covered.

You know, it would be easier to buy two of the small Garmin ones and put one in the front window and the other in the back. No wires needed.

I worked a weird swing shift 4/10’s. I started at 3:45PM and worked until 2:30AM. Over the years I’ve seen a number of impaired drivers and 3 wrong way freeway drivers. The last one had just come onto the freeway off ramp when I encountered him. I was too busy flashing my lights and honking at him to get him to turn around to get his plate number. I was way too busy and careful to avoid him to get more. Thank goodness I had a dash cam to be able to report the driver once I got home and pulled the memory card. I would also recommend you do a practice run of recording, pulling the card, and checking it on your computer. After an accident is not the time to learn how to use it.
In other countries dash cams are almost a necessity due to the number of insurance fraud cases. You can find many videos on YouTube of weird stuff people see while driving. Things like a tank crossing the road or wild near miss accidents. I think dash cams are most useful in disputes over car accidents. The more information you can provide your insurance company the better the chance you get your claim settled. In the case of my wife she gets so flustered in an accident she doesn’t remember anything. The camera helps if it ever happens again.

Been mulling over if I should get one. Last week I had to report a diver ahead of me for littering out the car window; obstructing the road etc. It was insane all the information I tried to write down a pad on paper I just happened to have near me. Luckily I was at a red light behind the car who did the act. I wrote the cross-streets, license-plate, make of the car and rough time it occurred. It was easier once I got home to issue a report but I know it would’ve been easier if I had a dash-cam.

More car manufacturers should have them built into your rear view mirror and backup camera that’s already in your car rather than having to buy a separate camera and have ugly wires all over your interior

I am glad dash cams are covered again, but I wish viewing angles of each dash cam was also discussed since it’s pretty important to many drivers out there. I believe the Garmin and Nexar models in this video only covers 140 degrees when some of Vantrue models cover 160+ degrees they claim.
Also, I find it out to see this lineup of random price range models from different manufacturers.
One last thing I’d like to add is, please remind future dash cam buyers that they driving habits are also recorded and can work against them.

    November 13, 2022 at 7:27 pm

You are not connecting a cable when you put the cams up on the window. I guess we should assume that they all have a cable attached when working. But you didn’t put the cable on and when you were showing them working, you hid the wires. Seems like lying to me.

I have a vantrue N2S but it doesn’t really notice tiny bumps on the vehicle. I’ve tried to test it out by shaking the car while it’s on parking mode. It recognized the movement but it won’t secure safe the video file. Can someone recommend me a good dashcam which goes off by the smallest hit.

Do these devices generate a great enough power draw when your vehicle is off to drain your battery?

  33. SteveandLizDonaldson

    November 14, 2022 at 3:10 pm

Great presentation for someone new to them like myself. Maybe it would be useful to also add about charging: Can they run off internal batteries (say charged indoors overnight), or must they be plugged in to the car’s 12v power?
