The seconds saved (and lost!) during a pit stop can be the difference between a champion and a racer who doesn’t place. If we playback a video of a NASCAR pit crew, we can see all the things they do precisely in an incredibly short amount of time.

*This video is about the 5 lug nut pit stop that is still used on the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Camping World truck Series.

PIT Instruction and Training has trained pit crew athletes for the sport of NASCAR since 2001. With nearly 70% of its eight hundred and sixty-five students having raced in NASCAR’s top three divisions, PIT has proven itself to be a high capacity producer of pit crew talent for the motorsports industry. Interested in taking the pit crew path? Call 704-799-3869 or email [email protected] for details on how to begin your new career in the pits.

Adam Merrell has been coaching pit crews within NASCAR since 2006 and has coached multiple stock car and truck teams since joining PIT Instruction & Training in 2007. He is a certified and licensed athletic trainer (ATC/L), and a certified strength & conditioning coach (CSCS) by trade, which has strengthened his knowledge in biomechanics and coaching to help place pit crew members at the highest level with championship teams.

Not only is the pit stop slow, the guys wear jogging pants and lone t shirts? No fire proof gear for the guys? So when a fire starts what happens?

      May 26, 2022 at 4:31 pm

rules say they can only send 5 people over the wall. They’re moving 90lb tires a jack, the large fuel can and the tools to remove and return the lugs as well. The 5 person limit restricts what they can do,

Honestly 16.6 is on the slower side for a 4 tire stop normally it can get closer to 12-13

    • mavfan1

      May 26, 2022 at 4:21 pm

the newer cars have a single lug per tire, not 5 like in this video, that makes a difference.

  7. Steven Banks

    May 26, 2022 at 2:29 am

I thought the regular footage of this pit stop IS slow motion compared to F1 pit stops.
Of course F1 huge crew, 1 lug nut per, no refuel.

    • mavfan1

      May 26, 2022 at 4:22 pm

newer NASCAR cars also have 1 lug so it’s faster than in this video.

I tried out the Pit Crew challenge at the NASCAR hall of fame! Our quickest time was 17 seconds. the pit crew for being able to do everything in such a short amount of time, that’s impressive I know I’m not joining a pit crew anytime soon…

You have to recognize you need an expert that understands how to read the market so you can avoid winning today and losing tomorrow. There’s reason why experts like Mrs Nancy wins all the time I was a bit skeptical but she

the greatest regret is not trying and failing but it is attempting not to try at allFunny enough people aspire to emulate great investors and entrepreneurs, of our time but they only see their wins and achievements and they careless about their challenges and failures

could be quite profitable right off the bat if you are an expert in reading charts in fx investment and spotting breakouts, reversal, trend continuation, and you able to master price action and Candlesticks, Hence the need of an expert like Mrs Nancy

the jack person has the scariest task, imagine releasing the jack and you accidentally place a finger between the lift and the base of the jack with all the weight of the car. I know there’s a handle but compared to f1 jack, this is more insane.

I’m not the biggest NASCAR fan at all – I’m all F1 – but as far a nuance and technique are concerned, THIS is the definition of economy of motion.

    STUNNING video.

I agree. I did not realise just how thought out every single movement was in a NASCAR pit stop, down to the number of steps between each objective. Not a real fan of the sport (at least not watching it) but you can’t help respecting this meticulously choreographed pit dance. Fascinating video.

  37. Matthew Viramontes

  44. Brandon Johnson

Worth noting that the new NASCAR cars only use a single lug per tire, a la F1. The amount of time to tighten that one lug is about the same as the five before.

What about the removed lugnuts lying on the pit lane…who removes ’em??

    • Siromoru

      June 5, 2022 at 5:38 am

the pit crew members after their done?? have you even taken a second to think about your own question

    • Rakesh Patel

      June 5, 2022 at 5:52 pm

@Siromoru after “they are” done not “their” done ; yes I that’s understood, what I meant was in the speed of the removal it’s difficult to keep track of each tiny nut rolling away undetected and it would surely be difficult to locate and retrieve each one before another car pits…they didn’t mention anything about it..so I was wondering if someone actually keeps track of each one.

    • Siromoru

      June 6, 2022 at 2:59 pm

@Rakesh Patel Oh ok, in that case, nobody really keeps track of them they just sweep them up after the pit stop is done and discard them. Often fans with a pit pass can get a few.
