Not sure how to feel about learning meditative eating is a thing…practice 2 skills at once or dangerously calorie-dense?

Why is it when I had COVID- everything tasted like dusty flowers?

Also- why does all wine taste bitter to me

I’m pretty sure I’m a supertaster. I would never be able to be a “taste expert”. Whenever there’s a hint of a taste I don’t like it overpowers anything else and that dish ends up tasting bad to me. (Yes I can still feel other tastes but the “bad” one is all I can taste). For example I’ve never been tricked into eatibg vegetables as a child. I would always taste them no matter how well hidden they were or how little flavor they were supposed to have in the dish.

So here’s the story I’ve heard about flaming hot cheetos: The guy who invented flaming hot cheetos was a janitor. Him and his wife came up with the idea and pitched it to their CEO who had an open door policy.

So the whole taste-bud tongue region mapping thing… I learned about that in grade school but now realize it was debunked. The question is: How did scientists come up with something so wildly incorrect to begin with? Were they even scientists or just dummies makin’ crap up? I know scientists make mistakes like anyone. With a follow-up analysis it is usually pretty clear where they went wrong. But for this it just seems like the sort of thing that would have to be totally fabricated.

Interesting, but some things seem very generalised, like the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos inventor — there’s already been a viral video about the person who ‘invented’ them, and it wasn’t an entire marketing team:

  29. Chris

I was asking kids to write down their questions about plants. One kid wrote down “what do plants taste like other than salad?” So now I give kids the Ice cream flavor challenge where they have to name an ice cream flavor that has nothing to do with plants.

  39. Stephen Daedalus

    June 4, 2022 at 10:13 pm

Phony broad fails at the first question. Why differentiate between lactic sour, acetic sour and basic sour, giving buttermilk, vinegar and citric acid as examples, with citric acid as basic, when it is obviously an acid? Clue is in the name, Brunhilde. Also, no taste in dress.

when I was a kid in kindergarten we did an experiment with that old fake ‘five flavors’ taste zones thing and I never got it. I could always taste everything on every part of my tongue.

Really use those covid remedies to bring back taste and smell.

Mine were: Lavender (paired with the memory of my girlfriend spraying some before going to sleep), Lemon (paired with the memory of making tzatziki), cinammon (paired with the memory of putting cinnamon on oatmeal) and oregano (paired with the memory of sprinkling some on my pizza at the pizza place down the street.) twenty seconds for each smell and memory. One minute off between smells.

You mentioned phantom smells after COVID and that it goes away eventually, but you didn’t go into a lot of detail. I had COVID in January; I did not lose my taste or smell, but I did develop a horrible smoky smell that is almost constant. When it gets really bad (smells like someone is smoking a pipe right next to me), it causes migraine-like headaches. The only issue with taste is that I can’t seem to eat cilantro anymore which I used to love. It tastes rotten and the smell is horrific! Would smelling the essential oils regularly help with the phantom smell and cilantro? I can smell everything else just fine. Or would you suggest another method? And when are most people noticing that the phantom smell has disappeared? Thank you.

i think that those trademarked flavors are flavor combinations. sort of like paint. there could be 50 versions of a white, the differences are the tints put in so that is why 2 different manufactures white paints can look the same but are different based on the formulation

Blue raspberry is actually just raspberry flavour that has a blue colour. It was invented during a scare around red food colouring, also because there are a lot of red coloured flavours and blue helps it stand out, also kids just love blue foods. It was made by a sno cone manufacturer I’m pretty sure, and was so popular everyone else copied it. There’s a whole article about it on wikipedia which is a pretty interesting read

I looked into the study she discusses at 10:15 and apparently it’s rife with flaws and not at all how she describes it here. The participants were undergrads studying oenology, not experts. In addition, the study hasn’t even been published relating to taste, only odor. Seems like this is just another example of the media misinterpreting scientific studies, then people (and apparently YouTube channels) just believing it without fact checking anything.

You are way off with the Coca cola. Minty? Fruity? Sassafras?! Wow. Are you really a professional taster? Did you lhave Covid? There’s no kola nut in it. Even if there was, it wouldn’t be the main flavor. Kola nuts are simply bitter. Coca Cola flavor is Cinnamon, Vanilla and citrus with a touch of nutmeg and coriander. While the exact recipe for Coke is proprietary, the basic flavor blend is well known by flavorists and published in standard industry works like Merory.

I’m a supertaster, and I’m such a foodie. Things that taste good taste really good, and things that taste bad taste really bad. I love isberg lettuce, it has a lot of different tastes in it, while everyone else is like “Doesn’t taste much, but the stem is kind of bitter” and they think it’s the most boring vegetable ever. On the other hand, I feel like some other types of lettuces and green leafy things can be a little bit to much.

My partner is not a supertaster. When we try a new recipe we rate the taste, and my partner almost always give the food 3/5, while I almost exclusively give the food anything but 3/5.

Though, I don’t really like the word “supertaster”, it sounds like I’m trying to brag, when I actually just want to explain to people why I have very strong positive or negative taste reactions to different foods.

I eat a lot of spicy (hot) food and over the years I feel that I have become more tolerant or immune to the heat. So nowadays I can eat and enjoy food a lot hotter than I could when I was younger?

Why is this? Does the “heat” cause damage to the taste receptors over time?

Everything was great except the part about wasabi. Wasabi is not spicier than horseradish, quite the opposite in fact. What you are getting at every sushi restaurant unless you are spending $$$$ is actually just horseradish with food coloring. This is what is so spicy. Real fresh grated wasabi is actually much milder and has a really wonderful unique taste. But wasabi rhizomes tend to cost around $100/lb so it’s not a common ingredient except at very fancy sushi restaurants

    regarding the Flaming Hot thing:
Granted, although it was years ago, and I don’t know how true it is, but I heard that the flavor was originally suggested by a Mexican janitor at Frito-Lay, inspired by elotes. So in a way, he did make the flaming hot flavor. Supposedly, said janitor is now in a much higher up position now.

Also, doesn’t Starburst already have a cherry flavor, which is red? They probably just didn’t want two flavors with the exact same color, so they made strawberry pink.

I think a lot of these sort of processes are actually really important for people to understand on at least a basic level. I support “natural” foods and so forth, but I’m pretty dismayed and eye-rolling at how many who don’t even understand the science and thought which go into creating flavors are just out there caterwauling about the evil processed food and so forth. Some foods taste the way they taste because of science and that in itself is not sinister just because it may seem difficult for people to understand. I even see posts rambling about how there’s random deadly chemicals in this food and that food, stuff which is just complete lies but people don’t know any better so they take it as gospel.

The smell of garlic and onions, relative plants to eachother, get in your bloodstream and that blood goes to your lungs. Asking what Coca Cola tastes like is like asking what is common to original non-carbonated Pemberton medicinal (with cocaine) and the so called ‘real taste’ of today’s carbonated classic coke, or vanilla coke, or fanta coke, or cherry coke, or diet coke, or caffeine efree coke, or zero coke, or sugar free coke or any other of the wide range of ‘Real Thing’.

In other words, the taste of the ‘real thing’ is whatever flavoured, sugary fizzy water the individual chooses.

    “what does wasabi taste like?”
Well, for most people it probably tastes like horseradish with a bit of mustard, since most people have never actually had wasabi and what they have actually eaten with their sushi is exactly what I said, horseradish with a bit of mustard and green coloring… Unless you’ve seen the actual wasabi root grinded up in front of you, chances are you’ve never had wasabi at all…

To Wasabi: People often think the “Hotness” eaquals the “Taste”. Nope, that is not the case – at least not entirely.
Wasabi has much more “Taste” as most Horseradish, but I ate Horseradish much “hotter” than Wasabi.

Also, most “Wasabi” isn’t even real Wasabi or just contains a minimal amount of it.
Real Wasabi is expensive af and hard to get outside of Japan.

I’m a bartender, and I also agree Pepsi is sweeter than Coke. While most people ask for X and Coke, often times they are getting x and Pepsi.
Also, concerning the difference in flavour between bottled and post mix, Post mix systems aren’t always calibrated for the same ratio of syrup to carbonated water as the bottling manufacturer. Plus flavours can be picked up through the post mix lines, and with most bar guns, there is usually remnants of the last drink poured in the mixer head when the next drink is started

8:55 About this test: Having more than 35 papillae doesn’t makes a person a supertaster. The amount of papillae a person has, has nothing to do with the sense of taste. It’s a genetical matter. Supertasters have a special variation of the gene “TAS2R38”. There’s this new study about this: “Crowdsourcing taste research: genetic and phenotypic predictors of bitter taste perception as a model”, Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience (doi: 10.3389/fnint.2014.00033, 27.5.2014).

  343. Nihil Sustinet

    June 20, 2022 at 3:41 am

some of these answers are a bit misleading. real wasabi doesnt taste like horseradish, but in america real wasabi is very expensive, so wasabi you get at most low and mid-range sushi restaurants (and grocery stores) is just horseradish dyed green. thats why people think it tastes like horseradish here. actual ground wasabi root is very different.

      June 22, 2022 at 1:06 am

Frito-Lay acknowledges that the janitor (Richard Montañez,) worked for them, but refute that he was part of the development of hot cheetos. Frito-Lay gives the same explanation that Kimmerle does.

Pretty much in all cases wasabi paste will be horseradish, mustard and like 1% if( you’re lucky) of actual wasabi. The actual wasabi is very expensive, so in many restaurants that offer wasabi, it’ll be grinded up in front of you to prove you that what you’re getting is real wasabi. So when people say “wasabi” tastes like horseradish, its cause it pretty much is just that.

  387. AliceLycoris

    June 22, 2022 at 1:21 am

Interesting note: Real wasabi is difficult to cultivate and package and ship. It also grows only in a specific riverbank environment, which makes real wasabi expensive and in low supply. When young, real wasabi is a bit sweet not spicy. The “wasabi” that comes with your sushi dinner in America, or really anywhere outside Japan, is most often just horseradish with green food coloring. This green-dyed horseradish replacing actual wasabi is known in the food world as an ersatz or a replica food.

many types of cheese are a type of fermentable food. It ages like wine, some with bacteria, some with fungus, some have herbs and seasonings mixed in. Some are aged in specific ways, in specific areas at specific temperatures that makes different cheeses

  415. Gunkip

    June 23, 2022 at 8:37 am

The one about the hot cheetos, to answer it, it was supposedly thought of by one person, a Mexican-American man by the name of Richard Montanez, who was a maintenance worker/janitor in one of Frito Lay’s factories, coming up with the idea and presenting it to a board, he’s now a company executive. However, there’s a lot of controversy over whether he actually did, or if he made it up, or whatever the case may be, thought it was worth mentioning

That first question really needs a linguist to answer it. The difference is not in the actual taste, which is basically the same flavour like Beth says, but rather in one’s attitude towards that taste. Although sour can be used as a neutral descriptor of flavour, it does have an inherently negative connotation to it, as demonstrated in phrases like “sour (rancid) milk” or “a sour look”. So when one wants to describe something as sour in flavour but avoid implying any negative connotation or disapproval of that sourness, the word ‘tart’ will commonly be used instead.
