wait, so you can have an AK 47 in the US but you’re not allowed to use “primitive trapping”. k.

    • @codename495

      April 23, 2024 at 8:44 pm

There are many places you cannot legally posses an ak47. Also, they are absolute garbage weapons. Poorly made, dangerous and inaccurate, also they aren’t fully automatic, legally at least. Fully automatic weapons ARE controlled in the US.

here in Alaska, snare traps are perfectly legal, assuming you’ve got your hunting license and it’s in designated areas, so not sure what he means by “primitive trapping is 100% illegal”

I’m surprised he didn’t even mention navigating by the position of the sun itself, or by stars. Those are pretty useful skills to have 🙂 One time I went hiking and stayed out in the forest longer than planned, and it got dark before I could make it out. Thankfully it was starry, so I used the constellations as a guide for which direction to go.

Also, because of how widespread light pollution is nowadays (sadly), if you get lost at night, just walk towards the glow on the horizon, where the stars look washed out, and it will take you to civilization.

One small addition to the “washing clothes” segment: wood ash is great there, too. It will saponify fats. I would get my clothes full of ash, then get them really wet, let them soak for a few minutes, then proceed with everything he said.

  52. @jesserivera6611

why do hunter gathers like Khoisan/San people look nothing like the physique of “caveman” lifestyle people? Rhetorical question.

  54. @VincentGilligan

    April 25, 2024 at 12:12 pm

The best advice I could give is to practice your skills. You don’t want to learn that you’re not good at starting a fire or building a shelter in a life-or-death situation. You can have all the tools to survive but if you don’t have the knowledge or skills to use them, they’re pointless. Practice, practice and practice some more.

The toothbrush is not primarily for preventing cavities, it is more importantly to prevent gum disease. I doubt that willow will allow you to brush inside the gum at an angle.
It will be fine for a survival situation, as it is better than nothing, but if I had the choice I would pack a proper toothbrush and dental floss as well. (Toothbrushes are not enough to completely prevent gum disease, as there are areas that it can’t reach especially the gum between the teeth)

fun fact, the wheel wasn’t invented for travel. it was invented for pottery, then later adapted for carts since figuring out axles and such is kinda difficult without precision tools. until they figured that out they just used sleds to carry stuff.

You would drink your own urine (at first, before it starts coming out dark) if stranded at sea — you’re over exposed to the sun and dehydration is a very serious threat. But, yeah, you would _not_ go all Bear Gryllis and start drinking your pee just because you’re lost in the woods.

Life straw is good. Just remember water filtration requires contact time. Slamming water at your kitchen sink through a brita doesnt do what the product is designed for. Id imagine life straws being so small need a slow flow.

For washing clothes there is a method that beats handwashing in freezing water using sand (or even soap) by a mile… Just hang your clothes in a small stream and make sure they are secured by either rocks or string. Leave them overnight. A 6-12 hour rinsing cycle will to more than you will generally have the patience for using your hands, your clothes will be clean and 100% odor free. At almost zero effort. This one really changed my life while out on longer treks…

  143. @otismelvin6551

    April 28, 2024 at 8:00 pm

I would never eat a whole cricket unless I was starving and had no other choice! Crickets have a chitin shell. Most insects have a chitin shell. Birds, fish, frogs, snakes, and many wildlife can eat insects such as crickets with chitin shells with no problem because they produce enzymes that can breakdown the chitin in their shells. HUMANS do NOT produce the enzymes necessary to break down chitin. When chitin is not broken down, it is 1,000 times more toxic to humans than ingesting glyphosate. How toxic is glyphosate? Watch some videos by Stephanie Seneff to find out how toxic glyphosate is. So if I were in the wild an wanted to eat a cricket or any other insect with a chitin shell, I would want to remove the chitin shell and extract the inside contents somehow, to “skin it” if you will, to remove the chitin shell. Then if possible to heat the inside contents to kill harmful bacteria. Love your video. Your video is mostly very good and informative.

The square knot doesn’t just act as a way to join to pieces of rope, as that would be a bend.
Using a square knot as a bend can be extremely dangerous, as it can easily fail.

The square knot is a binding knot and should only be used as such.

    April 30, 2024 at 7:44 pm

Using a knot in a wrong way can cost lives. There are many many many safe ways of connecting two ropes together. And you show and pick one of the most dangerous way of doing so. We have done so many demonstrations to show and prove how dangerous using a square/reef knot is for connecting two ropes together. It is fine IF you are NOT using this combination of ropes with your body on one end. DO NOT TRUST THIS KNOT WITH YOUR LIFE!

There are so many knots you can do this safely with. These are called BENDS. The most famous of these knots is also one of the simplest and easiest to tie is called a sheet bend. The common thing about all bend knots is that while the ropes are taking outward forces the forces inside the knot are pulling inward. THUS they will not come untied even when loaded with weight. In fact the more weight applied the safer these knots become. In most cases the rope will break before the knot comes untied.

These are better knots to use to connect two ropes together
    Bowline
    Sheet bend
    Carrick bend
    Reever knot
    Alpine butterfly bend
    Flemish bend
    Harness bend

The problem with square/reef knots is that when used as a bend they can easily experience cross tension and this cross tension can cause the knot to capsize once this happens it’s easy for the knot to slip down the rope and can cause one end of the rope to slide through.

You can prevent this by adding an overhand knot on either side of your square/reef knot. (This isn’t always easy or possible though.)

A tiny little piece of ember can light up some dry leaves, they light up some twigs, and bing bang boom the forest is burning down in no time. It’s difficult to harness the power of making fire, but it’s even more difficult to control fire.

    May 2, 2024 at 8:46 pm

In regards to the ‘vegetarian survivors’ thing…generally in a survival situation you’re a ‘whatever you can get your hands on’-itarian, but I had a bunch of buddies once who were mocking me for looking into edible plants in our area, saying hunting and trapping was way better. So I came up with this little saying to hit back at them: A bird in the hand may be worth two in the bush, but a mushroom you *see* is a mushroom you *have* . The problem with the high calorie animals are that it also takes more calories to get them…either hunting them actively or walking out to check your traplines constantly. Fish trapping is a great middle ground because you’ll be going to your river or pond every day anyway to get water, but I’m allergic to fish so that wasn’t an option for me. If I find a grove of mushrooms, or a biggass berry bush, or massive stand of cattails, and I know what parts of those plants I can eat and how to prepare them, I can collect that food easily and sustainably for days without the expenditure of a hunt or the risk of nothing in my trapline. Its good to know *both*, if you’re going to be doing survival a lot, knowing your local plants will give you passive calories and other nutrients to keep you going between animal catches.
