that boundary example was so clear. like, ‘this is what will happen if you don’t stop’. not just yelling.

I do have a bit of an issue with all those words to get Timmy out of the potentially dangerous situation. I went for one sentence in a low, firm tone. If Timmy has been told before, I added The Look. Did I ever negotiate with my kids? Well, I was willing to hear their side (not about jumping on the sofa) and maybe they had a reasonable point. But my kids, now in their 40s, knew who was in charge, without yelling or belittling. Unsurprisingly to me, their kids are just as reliable. There are times to be gentle. This ain’t that.

For me its the minimap gps. It looks pretty in design but functionally it bends into itself too much outside of the way point line and distance marker.

I dunno. I guess that is what I do but in a more direct way. “Stop jumping on the couch” why? “Because it’s my couch and I like it and I don’t want it to break. Would you like if someone jumped on one of your special things and broke it?”
It sets the precedent to not ruin people’s stuff. It’s not the jumping that’s the problem it’s the jumping on the couch.

By gentle they generally mean a parent who has no authority
